"Faster Horses (The Cowboy and The Poet)" Full lyrics below,
Vocals: Tom T. Hall
Words & Music: Tom T. Hall
Original Album: Faster Horses (Mercury Records-1976)
Lyrics:
He was an old time cowboy don't you understand
His eyes were sharp as razor blades, his face was leather tan
His toes were pointed inward from a hangin' on a horse
He was an old philosopher of course
He was so thin I swear you could have used him for a whip
He had to drink a beer to keep his britches on his hips
I knew I had to ask him about the mysteries of life
He spit between his boots and he replied
Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey and more money
He smiled and all his teeth were covered with tobacco stains
He said it don't do men no good to pray for peace and rain
Peace and rain is just a way to save prosperity
And buffalo chips is all that means to me
I told him I was a poet, I was lookin' for the truth
I do not care for horses, whiskey, women or the loot
I said I was a writer, my soul was all on fire
He looked at me and he said you are a liar
Son it's
Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey and more money
Well I was disillusioned if I say the least
I grabbed him by the collar and I jerked him to his feet
There was somethin' cold and shiny laying by my head
So I started to believe the things he said
Well my poet days are over and I'm back to bein' me
As I enjoy the peace and comfort of reality
If my boy ever asks me what it is that I have learned I think that I will readily affirm
Son it's
Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey and more money
Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey and more money
Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey and more money
RIP Tom T. Hall! He passed away today at age 85. Hope he's singing his stories to Jesus up in heaven!!!

Amen to this. He is underrated.

Well worth the time.

One of the best story tellers ever.
Tom T Hall for real stories and country western music.
What Mr. Hall sings of is still true and always will be. Rest now Mr. Hall.
It saddens me to think Tom T. Hall has passed away. His Faster Horses album was in constant rotation on my turntable for years. He was as complicated a gentleman as he was a masterful storyteller and poet.
I hadn't thought about this tune for a long while until I heard that Tom died. My band used to cover this song. We were playing it in a honky-tonk between St. Paul and Hudson, WI, before the interstate was finished. It was not unusual to see 20 or more big rigs in the parking lot of that joint. The truckers loved this song. It brings back memories, RIP Tom T Hall.
LOVE TOM T HALL " He never understood that this song would, adopted by many "Bikers ! Many A beautiful thing !
A song I listen to daily😊
I always keep the Tom T. Hall music close at hand when I need a good lift.
Hi how are you doing. I hope you are safe and in good health. I'm Patti from California, looking for a new friend and i saw your pic here. I hope you don't mind, have a nice Sunday.
Here it is 2020 and damn i love this song
👍👍
2021 and still great
Not only was Tom T. Hall a classic singer, he was a top writer and wrote many top ten hits for folk and rock singers as well as country music.
If you don't understand this three minute song the first time then please listen to it again. It must have taken a lot of time to create it. Listen to it for a while because Tom T. Hall is not just a great singer but also a great songwriter. It was his last #1 Country song way back in 1976.
Contakum if you don’t get it second time, go back to justin bieber! Or whatever, you’re lost already!🤣👌
One of the greatest, for sure! R.I.P good-sir!
He was a real poet but even more a Philosopher and in the truest sense a story teller for damn sure. God Bless him.
The great poets of these past days were the song writers for sure.
Is there a crummy Tom T Hall song? Nope! Never. They're all superb. It's impossible to get tired of listening to him! A true balladeer.
There's..no wait that's Taylor Swift.
There's uh,no that's N Synch.
There's Uhhh.
No, you're right.
There is no such thing as a crummy Tom T Hall song.
You know, the other thing is that usually, when an artist dies, you know you'll never hear anything new from them. But in Tom T's case, even though I know dozens of his songs, I wander around youtube and I still find new songs that I haven't heard before, or "new" old songs that I had forgotten about years ago. They'll never be another Tom T Hall. May he rest in peace.
@@RemingtonRidersMusic Dave Dudley and Jeannie Riley recorded quite a few of his songs that he never sang himself.
Agree. Is there a crummy Marty song?
sneaky snake
Who could possibly dislike this. Great pics of a great man singing a great song.
One of many songs Tom made a fortune on. Rest easy, Tom!
Rest in peace dear friend my kids will know your music I promise

Thanks Tom for the music R I P you will be missed
Everybody under the age of 30 needs to listen to this song over and over on repeat until they get they point!
Got that right Mr
AMEN!
My friend and I were talking about this recently. In Michigan there is a "country" music festival called Faster Horses. My friend asked, "Do you think those people attending that thing know where the name of the festival came from? Do you think they even know who Tom Hall is?" I said I sure as hell hope so.
Damn right they do!
As a young 32 year old, Tom ts death hit me really hard. I stared listening to country late, at 30. I NEVER liked it but one day my mind changed and Tom t was by far one of my favorites. So many great songs. It'll always be faster horses, younger women, older whiskey and more money. And also old dogs, children and watermelon wine.
I heard this song in 1975. And it remains still in my list of great songs.
What else to say?
Truly words to live by.
I was always fascinated on how Tom holds and plays the guitar without a strap and never misses a note or chord.
lol , do yall remember chilets
Won't ever get any better than this. Dang!

Parents these days mostly listen to obscene rap
I just found out of his passing, but I think we all know now who the greatest singer of country music ever was
His music and wonderful sense of humor made a lot of long miles on the road a hell of a lot easier when I was young.
I'm not a huge country music fan, but Tom has an excellent and very impressive discography. I didn't realize that he had passed away until today, so I've been bingin' on quite a few of his songs. R.I.P. Mr. Hall, from this grateful music fan, who appreciates great music regardless of the genre.

Listening in '21, for my Dad (March his B-day month) took me along for a distance to see "T" perform at a Mason's Lodge in Dayton O., after the show, "T" sat right down at stage edge, met and greeted all fans that stayed after the performance. I'm real torn....I'm almost 50, and am thinking about when I'm not here, and how that'll go.
This song is in my top ones I want played at my funeral. Along with "East Bound And Down", and "The Rockford Files Theme". 😁👍
