I am from India and from what I have heard and read from many yogis and the elderly is that Indians started cultivating crops 7000 or more years ago. They had plenty to eat and therefore many started looking inwards. That's how the spiritual practice of yoga began!!! I recently started doing Hatha Yoga, and I have never felt so energetic in my entire life so far!!! So grateful to my ancestors!!!

Besides these techniques of breathing, India contributed immensely to science, medicine, architecture, mathematics, metallurgy, literature, textiles, art, culture, traditions and trade. So many civilisations have their foundations laid by Indians and you can still find Shiv Lings of ancient India all around the world. Modern world owes a lot to India. So an idol--it doesn't even have to be carved, it could be just some rock--is taken and worshipped as God, imbued with the qualities of God. And eventually that idol assists the worshipper in concentrating fully on God, forgetting one's individual self (jiva) and realizing the Self. If there were such advanced Yogic Practices around 4500 years back, it was because the civilization was advanced in all aspects of the life including various sciences like Astronomy , Mathematics, Civil Engineering , Alloys ,Herbal Medicines and others. The amount of deliberate mis-information on that whole civilization is staggering and beyond comprehension.

I try to do it once a week, and even that helps just slow everything down. There are real Yogis here who've been doing this alone, in Himalaya caves for decades. Nobody knows how old they are. Very few go near them. Even if they do, the Yogis don't talk much. They are in "samadhi", deep meditation. They don't want to be disturbed or distracted. People just leave them alone.

Joe, you should really call Nilesh Nilkanth Oak on your podcast. His work very scientifically proves that at least in India, there has been 17000 years long unbroken civilization. He analyses astronomical references made in ancient sanskrit texts, dismissed as calculation errors by mainstream historians, and compares them with geological data, climatological data, to come up with a robust timeline of history. It matches with what Graham Hancock surmises, and probably answers many mysteries of the ancient world and powers of the mind that you frequently explore. Contrary to what Graham says that answers lie in Americas, I suggest that many answers to the underlying thread of unity among the ancient civilizations lie in India.

@@nautiyogi8386 actually RigVeda talks as far as 30,000 BCE,
it talks about Saraswati river being 100 km wide, going all the way to the arabian sea
hydrologically, it has been determined the tiver existed in such a massive state around 30,000 bce.
And remember folks, modern hindus KNEW this about Saraswati from their scriptures,
but it was ridiculed in acadamia because no such river could be found. It was declared to be "mythical".
Of course, now modern science has actually discovered it running underground, in a vastly diminished form.
Indus valley civilisation is actually Saraswati Valley civilisation,
because 60% of the sites from IVC are located alongside Saraswati river and not Sindhu(indus) river.
All the textual evidence states that IVC people moved westwards when Saraswati dried up.
There were 700 years of failure of monsoon!

Relative of mine has an issue with high-blood pressure. Measures his BP everyday. One day, just after his reading, I suggested to him a breathing session. Took another reading immediately after the session. His BP had lowered significantly. We did this exercise several times in the following days. The results were immediate and consistent.
Fast forward, several months later: Does said relative practise the technique I taught him? Nope! "Too busy", he claims. Does he take the time to measure his BP daily? Yep. "Important to monitor my health", he says. 🤦‍♂🤷‍♂
Yogic breathing techniques do work but very few people practise them consistently. I've been guilty of procrastination at times, too. I'm no yogi but I try to be fairly consistent with some basic breathing techniques.
BTW, do yourself a favour and get a hold of the book - Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. It is an astounding philosophical treatise apart from being a yoga handbook.

It's about how slow you do it, eg taking upto 15 minutes to do one pushup like move with Kumbhak, Kumbhak meaning holding your breath, suspending it for as long as you can. Really nice video. But i want to clarify somethings.
Indus Valley Civilization was built not around Indus river. It was actually in the Saraswati river. A river that dried up 4500 years ago. The cities built around them were a source for economics and trade. Since the cities diminished due to drying up of Sarasvati, the ppl moved out systematically, over hundereds of years. That's why you don't find any valuable documentary evidence.
Secondly, cities were never a place for learning and research. For that, we had Ashrams, which were run by great sages. Eacha Ashram specialized in a specific form of knowledge. Arts, medicine, warfare, Alchemy etc.

He was right about the positive effect of concentrated breathing for people with anxiety issues. After years of anxiety/depression issues, the first time I did a seated meditation practice at 21, the immediate and obvious results ans benefits were notable. My sense of relaxation came within the first 5 minutes. It felt like my body had been a tightly clenched fist and for perhaps the first time ever my body opened into a calm and relaxed state. It took me a few years to figure out that such breathing exercises work better in the long run either with the postures of yoga or (in my case) doing a taiji form. The forms of taiji generates positive (yang) energy and then afterwards, the seated meditation produces negative (yin) energies, creating a balance in your health, but mentally and psycho-emotionally the two combined created a much healthier whole. Yes, it sounds like new age, tree-hugging blather, but it's still true that such practices did far more to make me happy than saturating my body with chemicals like zoloft or prozac ever did.

And around that time other civilizations that existed were the Assirriyans and Sumer.

  • @msriram9884
    @msriram9884 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

Sorry to say, but this is a bit of a confused explanation that he’s giving.
    1. Civilization in India likely goes back much older than 4 to 5000 years, the Indus civilization was likely connected to other river civilizations in India (like the Saraswathi) The idea that it predates the Rig Veda is a Western colonial concept, the early Indologists had to fit the Indian civilizational timeline to match the timeline of the Biblical flood, so they likely minimized the extent of the history in India.
    2. One has to look at all things in Indian civilization through the lens of a spiritual seeker. It is not a system that is centered around the body or rules/commandments.
    3. Even today in traditional schools of yoga, they will not teach you breathing, until you have mastered asana which literally means seat. The point being that you have to learn to sit still comfortably for at least 20 minutes before you can engage in any breathing practice.
    4. The practice of pranayama, yogic breathing, is to lead to dhyana(Sanskrit for meditation- this became chyan in Chinese and later Zen in Japanese)
    5. Breathing is considered important, because it is believed that the breath is connected to the mind. And the control of the mind can be achieved through the control of the breath.
    4. The mind is considered to be turbulent, if one is able to still and clear the mind, then one is able to see the divinity within, that is Yoga. It is to allow you to see the light within yourself. Like how you are able to see to the bottom of a lake when it is still and clear. Breathing is just a process to this.
Joe, please have an actual indigenous Eastern practitioner explain these ideas. Tired of hearing mangled explanations.
    Om Shanthi

    1. Who started it- Shiva/Adiyodi
    2. Are there written texts. Yes, “Shiv Purana” where he transmits this knowledge to “SaaptRishis” and many more such texts
    3. Why Indus Valley(and many more India civilizations before that not in western books yet) was able to develop these techniques- 1000s of years of peaceful existence due to geography of India.. Himalaya on top, Ocean at bottom and east and huge desert on west side. Not many invaders could challenge. For such inner science to develop, stable and peaceful environment is a must. Also, Shiva blessed the land with his presence due to these factors too
It’s frustrating now to see Joe Rogan raising and discussing these points time and again with some western people who are just the students of some random guru.. get the gurus themself on your shown to answer it for you. As people know, in the yogic scriptures and yogic culture, Adiyogi, also known as a Shiva in Yogic Culture was the first to experience alignment with the universe through mental, physical, and emotional practices 15000 years ago, in the Himalayas. Yoga, meaning union in Sanskrit is a series of postures that not only helps your stress and back pain but also aligns your physical, mental, and spiritual geometry with the universe at large. Hatha Yoga is the physical form of yoga, it includes the various postures that are famous in the Western World., these exercises help the cells in your body in unimaginable ways and reengineer your physical system to work efficiently. Jnana yoga is the yoga of the mind, where through various meditation practices, you can find the answers to our existence and beyond to reflect within yourself. It's the toughest form of Yoga only meant for the ones who have the mental abilities to fully reflect without identifying with the ego. There's Kriya Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, and other types of emotional forms of connection with the one. We believe in science, but science is an evolutionary quest that is still far behind what Yoga and Yogic engineering signify. To understand what is you, without your body and your mind, to truly understand your sense of identity and the cosmic intelligence that governs us and turns food into a part of us is what yoga strengthens, reflects on, and is based on. If you're reading this, understand that no matter who your worship, or what you believe in, things exist even if science hasn’t proven it yet. Science didn’t prove radio waves 200 years ago and if you told someone that you can talk to another person from thousands of miles away wirelessly, they would call you crazy and a fantasy believer. Just like that, science needs to explore and not exploit, and to truly understand what lies out where and on our planet, we need to look within., by doing so, we shall unlock all the mysteries of the universe and beyond. There are energies around us that science can't explain, but it does acknowledge them. Keep on the journey of doubt, skepticism, and exploration. But a skeptic, but don't be ignorant. Om Namah Shivay.

I think there was not much focus on material wealth, buildings, etc, but the principles of yoga/pranayama/meditation are so profound to seek higher purpose in life like moksha.

What I believe is the prolonged exposure to knowledge and life. Even the most modest estimates of the Indian civilization starts at at least 20000 yrs. The monotonous life set amidst the food security, safety from outside forces, solid knowledge, all set the way for search for something more that is non-physical and beyond all powers and greater than anything mortal. This thirst and the situation paved way for theories, Vedanta, Meta physical research. What they did isn't mere actions, but actions based on facts and experiential knowledge. If you ask me, when are you actually very well placed to achieve something greater? It is when all your basic needs are taken care of, safety is not a concern, coz that makes one's mind idle and probably focused as well. This civilization is very old and any other civilization that is this old and under similar circumstances would have given the same result. But its something profound. Geography played a great role in terms of safety too.

Joe try and approach Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev. It would be a very interesting convo. Joe's helps his audience explore various perspectives of humanity, speaking with Sadhguru would be an excellent opportunity to do so. Maybe if enough people implore him to do so; it may happen. Push this comment up by likes, or create your own comment. It would be the equivalent of speaking to a yogi, but one with a modern perspective and the ability to help people embrace both aspects of life, yoga and social interaction, you don't have to be in a cave to experience what a yogi experiences.

Joe's amazement is based on the misconception that human civilisation as a whole is always trending from less to more advanced.
CS Lewis termed this chronological snobbery. When you exit out of that mindset the record of ancient civilisations, with their advanced understandings of math, science, and architecture, makes perfect sense.

Earliest text of breathing techniques in India is vigyan bhairav tantra, at least 15,000 years old and considered source of all yogic and buddhist breath work techniques. My family has a history of asthma, but I suffered attacks for only 2 months in my life, after that I started pranayam and lived completely normal life since, even smoking and hiking. Breathwork not only cures, but leads us to divine, I can testify to that. Many examples like Buddha himself are there

Texts came much later, earlier everything was word of mouth, passed from teacher to student, hence the sutra format in ancient indian texts. Even Rig Veda is much older than its first physical text...

Joe Rogan, I think you should show some respect for the immense knowledge and wisdom regarding the breathing practices of the Yogis of India. Please don't take the name of the Unibomber and Swami Rama in the same breath. If you cannot fathom the vast difference between the 2, you are not the right person to delve into this divine knowledge.

The Vedas date back over 30,000 years. And the reason many of these texts are not older is because knowledge was only transmitted from Guru (teacher) to student, reading written words was not considered the best way to learn because the biases and the understanding of the person is limited in a new subject and so he might interpret the written text differently.

The main difference was the realization and idea that you can focus your own body and mind and improve your life to the point of divine knowledge.
It started the schools that experimented with and learned these practices.

I am constantly impressed with the variety of thoughts Joe has. He is truly the deepest and most open-minded person of our age. This aspect is what separates him from all the rest. India has such a wealth of knowledge that far surpasses all the other ancient cultures. i think the world will find all the roots of philosophy stem from this region of the world. It's a world of wonder in its own right since its true age is still not known.

All ancient cultures had treasures of wisdom, not just India. But in all other places due to rapid urbanization, it got lost. In India it survives in the remote areas and forests. The so called " Modern Indians" who lives in the cities doesn't know anything about it. Those who know them are in the remote areas keep it. secret and shares it only to those who are deserving.

Take two years. Mostly keeping to yourself, Anuloma Viloma Pranayama, forcing yourself to sit still and focus, stretching to remain limber, and eating simple food. I'm not sure what you will experience but... for myself, Out of Body Experiences, prophetic dreams, and so many hard to describe states of mind. Oh and you will also notice that the calmer you are the more virtuous you become... anyways... it's a weird trip and worth every step even if there is no finished goal (and I'm not sure there is).

Its very real. Real enough to experience from thousands of miles away never had met him in person. I still received the imitation into 3rd eye awakening and kundalini awakening. All free. I have donated out of devotion. Many hindus especially shaivites have Gurus.

Indus Valley did have religious concepts. There are seals of Mother Goddess. Also Indus Valley was much more than Hunter Gatherer civilization. It was at par, if not greater, than the Mesopotamian civilization and was the largest by area. You had Huge Granaries, Public Baths. However the presence in almost all the major towns dispute the notion that there was no form of government.
It would have been really fascination if we could have a glimpse of life back in the Bronze Age.
