@@epocish It very much is. Even in Japan, the age when a person becomes an adult is 18. While the age of consent in Japan is below 16, Japan has been criticized wildly in the international community for its pedophilia rates. Besides, you can't tell me that the judge contemplating proposing to Regina isn't creepy, let alone the 21 year old Max or the MID 30'S Ben Woodman. Besides, why are you sticking up for Big Top? Sure Mia does catch Redd White for you but it calls back to how she told Maya to give Phoenix three years more unless she wanted to be found guilty. I think it makes more sense that rookie attorney Phoenix Wright couldn't catch Redd White a criminal that has judges and attorneys in his pocket. In fact Phoenix needs Mia's help up until Bridge to the Turnabout (which would be three years) and is shown in Apollo Justice to no longer need her assistance.

And in regards of 2-3, i don't think it's as awful as people make it out to be; it's just your regular filler case, but i found it entertaining and actually on par with cases such as 1-3, 3-2 or 3-3 (talking only about the trilogy here). The game benefits from having only 4 cases, and 2-2 is so good, so thrilling, entertaining, well thought, and also one of the most relevant since it is the set-up for T&T, while 2-4 is of course one of the very best.

That's a fair opinion; 2-4 was my favorite (holy shit was the end nervewracking and the concept is so godtier, plus Edgeworth is great in it) until I played 3-5. Bridge to the Turnabout is my favorite for three reasons.
      1. 3-5 was the only case I played through with relatively no spoilers. I had already watched a playthrough of all the cases besides the last one. Actually playing through it and learning through the twists that way was so much better than just passively watching.
      2. It redeemed my opinion of the entire game. So far, there were two meh cases (Phoenix's) and two good, but short cases (Mia's). I wasn't particularly impressed with this game until I played 3-5, which made Mia's cases SO MUCH BETTER in retrospect. It also slightly redeemed 3-2 for me, since that case introduced Godot (who I didn't like much until 3-5, where his arc was resolved).
      3. It's such a good ending to the trilogy. It follows up on 2-2's unresolved ending, while also resolving Maya's arc and the unsolved stuff with her (what happened to Misty). Good stuff.
(Plus, Edgeworth is even better here than 2-4. I love playing as him.)

Stolen Turnabout and Recipe for Turnabout are weird cases, especially back to back. The fact that proving DeLite's innocent of larceny then "proves" that he murdered is former boss is a great twist, but having to go back on what you said for almost everything on day 1 trial is annoying. Recipe is similar where you have to go back on what phony Phoenix said and the 2 incidents that happened get jumbled up in your head. Even after replaying the games I still get confused and think "wait, what happened in each day?" If it was just one case it wouldn't be so bad but having both of those cases back to back really make me reflect on them negatively.

One little thing that bugs me about Stolen Turnabout is the sword. What was the real reason it got bent?! We established that Luke Atmey wasn't there the night of the crime, so he couldn't have been bashed by it. So what the hell?!
Also I frankly hated Recipe. The biggest offender is Jean Armstrong. I get that the story was written 20 years ago in a different culture, so it's not like it was the point, but I'm still not super comfortable with the way the character - unintentionally, again I must stress - portrays trans people as mentally deranged and prone to criminal behaviour. And I know the character isn't ACTUALLY trans, they're just very effemenate, but in English the character refers to themselves as a girl a few times and the whole thing makes me really uncomfortable.

I honestly enjoyed Turnabout Big Top, much to my surprise. Sure, the whole case was seriously a stretch and some of the characters were pretty annoying (and creepy), but there was a certain charm to the whole chapter. The Ace Attorney anime also had a lot of Big Top/ circus themes featured in the second opening, and boy is it beautifully animated and magical.
The only things I had major issue with were the love triangle, and the fact that I really struggled with some of the cross examinations. I also liked Acro,
It's nice to see a killer who wasn't denying their deed or going mental after the verdict and admit to his wrongs, but you can't exactly feel bad for the guy. I mean, my guy tried to murder a teenage girl straight away instead of trying to talk things through.

Hum, hum - I decided to make my own list of how fondly I remember each of the cases, and it wound up matching your list pretty closely! I played the trilogy initially like 7+ years ago, never making it past Turnabout Beginnings because I got stuck there. Very recently I did a new playthrough together with my best friend, where we went all the way through and it was a lot of fun!
    Tier 1: Incredibly Satisfying
    3-5: Bridge to the Turnabout
    2-4: Farewell, My Turnabout
    1-4: Turnabout Goodbyes
    1-5: Rise from the Ashes
    Tier 2: Fond Memories
    2-2: Reunion, and Turnabout
    3-4: Turnabout Beginnings
    3-1: Turnabout Memories
    1-3: Turnabout Samurai
Tier 3: I Remember Having Fun
    1-2: Turnabout Sisters
    1-1: The First Turnabout
    2-1: The Lost Turnabout
    Tier 4: Bad Memories
    2-3: Turnabout Big Top
    3-3: Recipe for Turnabout
    3-2: The Stolen Turnabout
My thoughts mostly match yours on each of the cases as well, I think, with four big exceptions: Turnabout Samurai, and the three I put in Tier 4.
For Turnabout Samurai, I think what puts it higher on my list than yours is that I actually quite like Will Powers, Dee Vasquez, and the Steel Samurai's existence in the setting in general.
Will Powers was a nice guy who deserved a lot more appreciation than he got, and how much he cared about the kid fans really stuck out to me.
Dee Vasquez was the first perpetrator that really felt like she knew what she was doing, and though her personality is a lot more understated than most antagonists in the series, she nonetheless stuck out to me on my second playthrough. The way she would respond to being pressed with these thoroughly unhelpful one-word replies was both funny and made her feel like a pretty darn tough cookie to deal with. Her being spooky and ruthless and yet having a sympathetic backstory and only having done the crime out of self-defense was also a really interesting juxtaposition. (...I'll admit there is some possibility that my realizing I was A: a lesbian and B: a bottom could have contributed to me paying more attention to her...)
And finally, the Steel Samurai as a show just helps the setting feel a bit more alive and lived in. And in-universe pieces of media can be really neat because characters can make references to them in a way that feels relatable to the the players, while not rapidly becoming outdated the way referencing real-life pieces of media would.
And then there's my bottom three: I'll explain why they stuck out mainly badly in my mind.
Turnabout Big Top: I have pretty much no attachment to any of the characters in this case other than being mildly annoyed by a few, so this case was mostly forgettable to me. The love triangle was pretty weird with the ages, but I managed to mostly ignore it. Still, this case is just a thorough "meh" in my memories. I suppose I liked that Maya's interactions with Regina probably bolstered some lesbian/bi Maya headcanons? That's the best I got, really.
Recipe For Turnabout: The main characters that stick out in my memories are Jean Armstrong and Viktor Kudo. That's not a good thing.
I didn't really understand why I felt so deeply uncomfortable with Armstrong on my first playthrough, but that was like 7+ years ago, and by now I understand him as a character that basically just exists as "hey, look at how Gross and Weird the Queers are". I've gotten thicker skin than when I was a teenager, but I'd still rather avoid seeing him on the screen whenever possible. He's really the worst example of the outright rancid "comedy" the games sometimes have.
Viktor Kudo isn't as bad, his "old man wanting attention and to feel relevant" shtick was pretty funny to me, but his maid fetish was pretty... weird sometimes. Did we really have to have Maya and then Mia to dress in a maid uniform just to appease his fetish? The "female character has to flirt with/appeal to gross men they don't like in order to extract information from them" trope isn't really one I'm a fan of.
The Stolen Turnabout: There's a lot of things I like about this case, like Mask DeMasque, Luke Atmey, Ron DeLite, Godot… Unfortunately, none of that takes up as much space in my head as the phrase "Fucking Larry."
The Stolen Turnabout actually halted the playthrough of my friend and I for over a month. We got to Larry in the investigation section, started talking to him, and promptly didn't want to play anymore. Later, whenever we were in the mood to play more Phoenix Wright, we'd boot up the game, look at Larry's shitty borderline-incel dialogue, and promptly didn't want to play anymore. We eventually managed to force ourselves through it, but it took quite a while.
I actually liked Larry before this, but Trials and Tribulations just massively flanderizes him and makes him into... yeah, a shitty borderline-incel. He's not quite a full incel yet, but he's closer to being an incel than he is to being Old Larry.
The Stolen Turnabout, for causing my friend and I to just stop wanting to play the game, and for making us hate a character we'd previously liked, pretty easily hits rock bottom of my "personal enjoyment" tier list. I will say, though, that if Larry had not been present, this case probably would've been somewhere in Tier 2 for me.

@@darkcat6530 Perhaps if I were trying to make a tier list of the quality of each case, that would be so! But this list is purely about how much I personally felt about each case, and how fondly I remember them.
It is a very subjective list, and I can completely understand how 3-2 especially could be among someone else's favorites. 3-2 has a lot of really cool stuff going for it.
Still, everyone has their own likes and dislikes in fiction, and I think most people have at least one thing that they have a much lower tolerance for than average, some trope they really hate. For me, 3-2 was the case that had stuff in it that I personally had a really low tolerance for, and thus I could not enjoy it as much as I would have liked.

I really disagree with the turnabout samurai placement. The case was essential to develop edgeworth and they do a good job of it. I mean imagine if the case didn't exist edgeworth development would feel weird and incomplete. Not only that but i really like the calm atmosphere during the investigation phases and i like the defendant a good amount. Obviously the case isn't perfect. The side characters were ok at best the villain exists cuzz we need a villain and the plot is decent i feel like it isn't that bad

I really do hate Turnabout Big Top, for obvious reasons. But honestly, the circus music that plays in the background is really catchy. It's too bad, because I do like the circus, and I think the circus is a great place for an investigation and all. It was just so held back by the unnecessary love triangle involving two men- and a puppet- and a teenage girl. Moe was a decent character- though it takes time to get used to him- and I really liked Acro and his backstory. I did find the case to be a little long for my liking, though, just like with the Steel Samurai case. Definitely my least favorite case.
I'd say my favorite case would be the case with Luke Atmey. I loved the twist in the first trial day: no one was killed, your goal was to find a thief for once, and honestly, Atmey is a great villain. He played everyone for a damn fiddle at first, and that was great. Ron was adorable in his own way, Larry came back, they made references to Oldbag, and best of all, Adrian Andrews returned. The case itself wasn't too long or drawn out, it had just enough twists and difficulty to be fun, yet wasn't so hard that it was a pain to get through, and this was Godot's introduction... and it was done so well.
Also this might be a hot take, but I wish they did more "extra" cases like Rise from the Ashes. I thought it was an excellent way to expand the universe, try some new stuff, use the DS's extra screen, and give us an extra challenge once saving the day in the rest of the cases. I really wish they did this with more games, and if Capcom DOES make more Ace Attorney games, I hope they make a habit of making extra cases in the future. Hell, I'd be out the nose for more DLC if that's what it comes down to!

I don't believe that it was brought up in The First or Sisters, so there's at least a logical reason behind the decision, even if it's fundamentally flawed.

This is such a weird opinion but I love the stolen turnabout to death, with the top 3 being the same but rise from the ashes in 5th and the stolen turnabout taking fourth. Adrian Andrews returning was great to see, Larry Butz was worse than the first game but still great, and Godot was incredibly introduced. Desiree is pretty average, but where the case truly shines for me is Atmey and Ron DeLite. Loving Atmey is probably less controversial so I will start with that, but Atmey is always funny and him repeating his breakdown twice was hilarious. It was super fun to take him down and his murder plot might have been the most layered and complex in the trilogy. He also has the best name pun and a great theme song. Then we have Ron DeLite, where I’m not quite sure it people love or hate him. His confession immediately was kind of funny and kind of lost its weirdness factor due to rise from the ashes, and the twist that THIS CINNAMON ROLL WAS ACTUALLY MASQUEDEMASQUE WAS INCREDIBLE. I literally never expected that. His gimmic of nobody listening to him and trailing off was also funny, and the end part where he used double jeopardy to escape all his crimes was both hilarious and made me happy because of how cool this man is. Also legendary song and i love Desiree’s description of him saving her.
I have just realized how long this comment is. My number one skill in life is gushing about the stolen turnabout. Luke Atmey has a cool nose. Goodbye.

    I don't understand why people give 2-4 so much credit when it lacks quality. Don't get me wrong, JFA and T&T are good, but IMO and I repeat, IN MY OPINION, I feel the original Trilogy [The First Game] gets the win in terms of quality, start, storyline and a great ending. Jesus Christ, 1-4 and 1-5 are even more underrated considering they give realistic concepts here. I would like to reiterate on the first;
A psychopathic view of being a perfectionist, seeking revenge against your rival, killing him, training his son, only to completely damn his life by prosecuting the case of which he is accused of, well-knowing that he will get the death penalty. A truly cunning, criminal mastermind with one of the most villainous characteristics. Not to mention, his tactics and strategies make him the best prosecutor. Manfred von Karma was top-notch, I would even consider him the best antagonist in the entire series. We couldn't get a single edge over him throughout the entirety of the trial except the ending where Phoenix literally carried out a bluff which LUCKILY worked beautifully for him. 1-4 also had a really well-written connection case, being the DL-6 incident, and of course, Edgeworth's backstory for the matter. What I want to convey is the negativity, the buildup of corruption in humanity, and the evils living in Society right now. People who develop hatred and will go to any length to carry out even murder, to get rid of any inconveniences. Realistically speaking, it's the most understandable motive yet people find it boring. Most common, in fact.
Coming to RFTA, it seriously had one of the best antagonists in the entire franchise. Damon Gant, someone working in the police force, right at the top, being the head of the department, turning out to be a perpetrator and the true murderer of the case, not to mention, he carried out a most perfect plan during Joe Darke's final attempt to kill, using the opportunity present to him to gain something which is VERY realistic for human beings as well: Power. Authority.
Another beautiful way to portray corruption, what self-conceited ambitions may lead you to, unless you are following the correct path. Gant blackmailed a person, using their family and the horror of losing those precious individuals, to threaten that very person in doing whatever he orders. He forged evidence, concealed evidence and even handed the former to a prosecutor enabling him to use it as dirt against him once the public finds out. Not to mention, a very intelligent move to use the concealed evidence as insurance to display Ema as the supposed culprit to escape punishment.
And let's not even talk about the investigation as well as the mechanics. Those who have come this far reading this essay, thank you and have a nice day. Also please remember that these are my personal opinions.

    • @0325hjs
      @0325hjs หลายเดือนก่อน

I don't realize how so many people prefer 2-4 to RFTA. RFTA was amazing, even the most minor of characters (ex. Angel Starr) were likable. I loved the parallels and contrast between the Fey and Skye sisters; it was a key moment of character development for Edgeworth (in the following games he becomes less cut-throat and we no longer see him acting sketchy in the courtroom just to win a trial); jar fuckery aside, every part of Gant's plan and of the investigation made perfect sense; and finally, the new investigation mechanics were very fun, I expected them to be added in the following games as well.

I don't think it has to do anything with logic as the majority of Ace Attorney cases do have large leaps of logic with them. This case literally has no difference when it comes to the rest base around the logic I think the problem is that the other cases help you guide through the case that way the crazy logic starts to make sense to the player. This case doesn't. It expects you to come up with these crazy conclusions that the average player would not come to. The moment when apparently the coat the ringmaster wore landed perfectly on the statue when he got hit in the head which is why Moe believed the statue to be Max was when I was already done and it didn't get better after that. After I finished the case it was the first time I took a break from the game as I thought I needed one after all that. I am happy that about 2 weeks later I came back to a much better case.

I liked a lot of the cases, but there are some nitpicks I have with some.
    - I can't understand why people didn't like Big Top. I only found Ben a little annoying but the larger penalty for pressing unnecessary statements was interesting, unlike
    - how in ini miney's case I was forced to press pointless statements to push the game into a scripted event. That really annoyed me but I like the premise of the case.
    - Recipe for turnabout started interesting but the second Furio showed up I was so offput. You're telling me that he's the one that somehow fooled the courts and the defendant maggie into thinking he was Phoenix?? And Maggie didn't realize that her lawyer was the same person she saw sitting at the table of the same crime scene??
    - I know Luke Atmey's name is literally look at me, but being so overconfident with nothing to show for it started to annoy me
    - I thought the stakes raised so fast in episode 2 that Redd White had to come back, but he just doesn't. it is cool that the whole case is based off of the watergate scandal though

I don't quite agree with the inconsistency in how you rank Turnabout Sisters vs how you rank Reunion, and Turnabout.
Both introduce characters and establish AA storylines, but Reunion, and Turnabout makes top 5 while Turnabout Sisters is dragged through the mud for doing the same thing. Otherwise, mostly good list friend. Have a like.

    • @tbone415
      @tbone415  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It's been forever since I made this video but I'll explain it a bit more to you. Sisters to me does a great job at establishing the main cast, but it still isn't all that great of a case. It's relatively easy as you'd expect what was supposed to be the first case to be. The fact that Mia literally hands you the evidence to win the case has always left a sour taste in my mouth about it as well. Reunion, I'd say is a better mystery. It's definitely more challenging and in a good way. It set's up Bridge to the Turnabout, and having a connection to that case is never a bad thing.
Both get bonus points for not forcibly stretching it to three days like some of the other cases in the series.

Disappointed case for me is Turnabout Big Top. I really wanted to like it, but the lion tamer has to be the most clueless person ever.
Surprising case for me (even though it was one of the easiest) is Recipe for Turnabout. It was a good twist at the beginning where you see 'Phoenix' lose and him not even knowing that he lost. Plus I am also a sucker for anything mob related, so theres that...

  • @megarotom1590
    @megarotom1590 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

3-3 > 3-2, I know you said that you could cut case 3 and lose nothing, but you could also cut case 2, after all, then his intro would be in Recipe for Turnabout instead and the plot is much more intriguing, and also I just don't care that much for case 2. Though I will admit, I can look past Payne bc he's an idiot and I'll even look past the judge, he's old and his eyesight probably could use some work, BUT REALLY MAGGEY, the fact she couldn't tell someone who is SO OBVIOUSLY not Phoenix was defending her. Like I know she's only met him once, but still. I think it would've been better had he looked closer to Phoenix.

Much prefered samurai i think i just enjoyed the first game alot and this case was good filler that acted like world building for me.

15:32 I’m pretty sure you know this, but that isn’t the end of the series, is the end of the first trilogy. There are more additions to the Ace Attorney franchise. This is the reason why commentary and animator TH-cam use a script. If you didn’t use a script, I recommend you use one. That is if you have the free time to make one. It makes commentary so much easier. Doing it on Google docs is pretty easy. It’s like school but it’s not that boring.
