A Week On The Wrist: The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph

  • The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph. This is a watch that is so known to many of you, it may not need much of an analysis -- but this is HODINKEE and you can believe you're gonna get one. The Royal Oak Chronograph is a watch that has thousands of lovers the world over, and a few detractors, too. The ROC, as I'll call it henceforth, is something of a middle ground between two completely distinct Audemars Piguet buyers -- the collectors, and, well, everyone else. The Royal Oak and Royal Oak Offshore families often appeal to very different people, but I'll get to that shortly. In this review, I tackle a mainstay in the AP lineup, and an interesting piece of haute horology, though one without its own in-house movement. I will look at how this 41mm column-wheel, vertical clutch chronograph wears, and if the matter of where the movement came from is even something worth noting at all. This is your HODINKEE Week On The Wrist with the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph, and it's one worth spending some time with. For the full story, go to www.hodinkee.co...

      +Zheng - Content Creator Good luck to you sir. But do remember, anything can be yours if you want it enough, if you're willing to work hard enough towards it! Just be sure to stay true to your heart and not get too wrapped up in material things along the way. That being said, this is a very beautiful timepiece indeed and I hope to be able to be a proud owner one day as well

      +Zheng Yep. You gotta work hard though and get job/work/business.. AP Watch is expensive as fuck. !ULTRA! LUXURY.

    • @masoncdyer
      @masoncdyer 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah money's gotta kinda be dispensable for you to be in the market for an Audemars Piguet. It's a positive and a negative aspect. Most people would love to own them but they're ludicrously expensive so very few have the chance, but then that makes them exclusive and also allows them to become very fine, meticulous pieces of art which adds to their beauty.

  • @floater156
    @floater156 9 ปีที่แล้ว +67

    How can he say it uses a mass produced movement (that's modified by AP), then the next sentence say it's the best true luxury chronograph when others use in-house movements, which are typically more desireable?

    • @Pravoizavlijesvijeta

    • @christophersummers415
      @christophersummers415 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Literally every other option that is in house is better. I don't know what he's saying at all, or why a high Swiss brand would use mass produced movements? How about a vacheron overseas Chrono in gold, Daytona isn't holy trinity, but it's in house, and basically every chronograph made by jlc is way better ...imo. based on TH-cam videos and zero hands on exp., I'll admit, but still, I don't think archive luxury would approve...

    Despite the putting down Zenith and Rolex (in comparison to this watch), I would personally rather have a Zenith or a Rolex Daytona chronograph variant (or maybe a Girard Perregaux or JLC)! Would prefer a case-back too...

    • @SharpGilpin
      @SharpGilpin 9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I am considering an AP, however, very concerned about several bad reports (like yours) about the lack of service. Was this problem ever solved by AP? What was the location?

    • @CYC_JP
      @CYC_JP 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sharp Gilpin For the same price, always go for Patek and Vacheron before you consider an AP. Only get an AP after you have at least a Patek. Patek is a brand of assurance, your watch, your money is been protected. With AP, I wish you good luck.

    • @MrChiptrix
      @MrChiptrix 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I respectfully disagree... A 5712R for example is a better watch and more luxurious than the AP.
      But if u are not 45+ of age or wear a suit most of the time, then i would prefeer the AP

    I just received my 15400 in stainless and I love it,,,it's everything you could ask for in a lux/sport piece however I am going to be honest my oyster being though it has a micro adjustable glidelock system is superior in terms of comfort,, like Ben says the bracelet is so substantial,, stretch is not coming fast enough,, I'm like 1 and a half links removed and it's either 1 off or 2 off so I just took the 2 off and it's a lil tight but I'm going to have the holes in one of the removed links drilled so it adds some room and then swap a link I have now out for the modded link,,,if anyone has a better way to do it please let me know,,,does the bracelet stretch over time?

    • @CYC_JP
      @CYC_JP 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Please... Rolex is one of the greatest horology houses. Maybe you are just new to the world of horology, but don't worry lad, you will learn to truly appreciate Rolex.
      Almost every watch collector went through these stages, I'm not excluded:
      1. When we know nothing about watches, we thought Rolex is the best or the most expensive watch you can get.
      2. Then when we just got our feet into the door of the horology, we learnt there are so many other brands priced higher than Rolex, we learnt there are decoration, finish, complications etc. At this time we starts to look down on Rolex, think Rolex is the watch for people with no watch knowledge.
      3. After we collect and learn more about horology for few years; After we experiences so many different brands like Patek, AP, Vacheron, Lange, Parmigiani, Breguet, Blancpain, JLC, GO, IWC, Panerai, GS, Zenith, Omega etc. and of course, Rolex. We finally truly start to appreciate Rolex. Because it is just so great, for its price, for what Rolex offers. We start to appreciate Rolex's attention to detail in terms of finish, their robustness, precision, at least 100m water resistance across all sports lines, 100% in-house - that even includes all the materials, all the steel and gold are forged in Rolex's own metallurgy plant. At the same price range you can have JLC, GO, IWC, Panerai, Zenith, Omega as alternatives to Rolex, then you will realize non of those brands can offer what Rolex offers at the same price point. JLC for example, at US$10K, JLC doesn't even offer chamfered screw and stone slots for their movements and no polish on the beveled edges either. Rolex offers all that even in their most basic Oyster perpetual line at round only US$5K.
      You are probably in stage 2 at the moment since you seem to dislike Rolex so much. But ask any seasoned watch collector, you will know Rolex offers absolutely best bang per buck in the luxury watch industry (GS and Blancpain can probably compete for the second best bang per buck brand).
      The true joke of high end watch making, is Hublot, and arguably, Franck Muller too.

      @Alex_Aramayo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      YB tell that to R. Aranda S. Lol just another ignorant wannabe watch enthusiast that thinks Rolex is the best like seriously a Daytona vs a Royal Oak gtfo 😂

    • @yasminebubteina
      @yasminebubteina 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand that here's trying to compare the AP chronograoh to the Daytona because of the whole purpose of the Daytona and its history and relative to F1 and Rolex's relationship BUT to date , AP is known to have the most precise chronograoh and it is AP part of the trilogy so it tops the Daytona as a Sports watch and on every other level of watch making . If you understand horolgy then you can learn to appreciate the Daytona but you will know that the AP chronograoh is the right and praised choice . I understand why you would say Dayton with its relation to Paul Newman and the vintage collectors dream to have a Paul Newman but nothing tops the AP in this catagory . This watch to date is the best chronograoh on the market .
