    SAFE is indeed the child lock mode. Not sure why it was on. Probably so much noise on that power rail that the micro was freaking out. On some models, there is a button called c.lock on the remote that cancels it. On others, you hold power or play for 6 seconds.

    the lack of wires in that vcr is pretty amazing. there's like two flex cables and that's it. a big change from the 80's models with dozens of connectors and seemingly miles of wire. The amount of integration and simplification is pretty high on that, it must be near the tail end of VCR production. I still am amused by the single sided board with the dozens and dozens of jumpers, and that it ends up being cheaper that way vs. a 2 layer board.

    Someone reversed-engineered the VCR Plus codes and came up with a code generator. And yes, it was easier to generate a code and use a VCR Plus than the alternative, especially when you had to deal with a cable box.

    I have a similar Samsung VCR, bought new in 2004 for just 59 EUR. Tape transport is not very robust, there is a gear assembly that is engaged for the fast (very fast) rewind, but it broke due to a cassette whose tape apparently was a bit sticky. I had to glue the gear back, not sure how long it will last, plastic is already brittle after 16 years and not very high quality to begin with.

    We had an alternative to VCR Plus back in the day. It was called Showview. Actually maybe it was the same thing, just branded under a different name for European countries. Just a bunch of numbers. If you punched them in correctly, the VCR automatically set itself to record the specific TV show. To many people it was just faster to set the VCR timer by hand because the shows never actually started exactly on time. It was safe to set the recording five minutes earlier and end it fifteen minutes later due to commercials.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep I'm sure that was exactly the same thing it was a series of five numbers and it would set the recorder for the channel and the date and the time. Of course once people started requiring cable boxes this became a problem so then the VCR manufacturers responded by including a cable mouse which was an infrared emitter that sat on top of the cable box to tune the cable box to the correct Channel. But you're right most people didn't use it. Then for a while we had TV guide. This was an electronic program guide that you subscribe to and it would do exactly the same thing that the guy does on current cable and satellite boxes except in this case it would set your VCR or your DVD recorder to record a program off of conventional cable or off air. It may have been a free service for that matter I don't know as I never owned any equipment that supported it at the time it was around. I know the signal was embedded in a local TV station as part of the vertical interval data and at night the equipment when it was in standby would tune to that signal so that it could download the guide information and the time and it was typically carried on one of the PBS stations. It didn't last long and TV guide went bankrupt and of course the signal shut down and it made all of these machines that relied on it obsolete. Fortunately you could still set it manually but in reality these machines that used TV guide were a pain in the ass to set manually so it was a lot of work and people dumped the equipment because it was so frustrating to set things manually. One of my Panasonic DVD recorders has TV guide built in and when I first fire it up it's sitting there looking for the TV guide signal which of course doesn't exist anymore so it will just sit there forever until I manually cancel it and this happens every time there's a power interruption. of course if you don't have the original remote you can't cancel that feature which was another drawback to that system because universal remote didn't have the button required to bail out of that TV guide screen so if your original remote was lost or damaged and the power went out the unit would basically lock up and you would have to try and find an original remote that had that feature.

    • @Oldgamingfart
      @Oldgamingfart 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@12voltvids Here in the UK it was known as VideoPlus+ though I still preferred to set timers the old fashioned way (Start - End - Ch - Date). It was much easier with machines that had a remote with a large LCD on them; simply transit the data over to the VCR, job done..
      There was another more advanced system known as VPT (Video Programming via Teletext), which allowed timer recordings to be set from the channel guide (via the VCR's on-board Teletext/ Fastext decoder). If you also had the PDC (Programme Delivery Control) feature, it would automatically adjust the timer block, say, if a sports or live/ news event overran.
      I had a Philips S-VHS machine that did all of the above..when they still made all the good stuff in Austria, and long before the JVC clones from Malaysia!

If I FF or REW, it winds the tape for a few seconds, ejects the tape, and shuts off. I haven't got a clue. I don't know if there's something I can do, or if it's just EOL.
