  • Sailing in 50 knots of wind! We sailed from Mykonos to Koufonisi in Greece and the winds were much stronger than expected. Some of the crew got a little worried and scared but the Beneteau 62 handled the conditions well and we made it safely!

Bobby, I’m very impressed with the way you actually sailed in the weather instead of just waiting for slack winds and motoring point to point. Being Captain means being proficient in all conditions and when you have a tremendous boat like this Beneteau Oceanis 60, it can definitely handle it! Your seamanship has improved in leaps and bounds…you seem meant to have a sailboat…one of these big monohulls is such a seaworthy vessel and provides great views for your followers! Well Done! I loved it!

Agreed. Anyone that didn’t enjoy that moderate challenge with a fantastic boat which is made to handle all conditions, may it serve them to realize it’s a privilege and a responsibility to crew for a good captain who knows his and the boats limits. Nice test for you Atlantic or Pacific cross.
Real Nice job Bobby, good to se you sailing instead of motoring. Hook ‘Em!

@@jefflewis9073 I used to sail my Challenger 35 Ketch on lake Ontario for almost 20 years from April 1st to November 1st as we lived aboard her. She was beautiful in every wind and wave combination. In the really big stuff I just wanted to keep her way far away from a lee shore. Safety was always paramount.

as a professional instructor - and former Principal of a sailing school - you are sadly misguided on the competencies on display here. the yacht wasn't prepared for the sea that well - the novice crew wasn't wearing any form of restraint even though they were knowingly going into gale-force winds. Worse the owners of the yacht would be having a fit - the soft covers should have come down instead of flogging to death. Apparently "Bobby is the brains trust" yet he was not clipped on. that is just a massive fail nor was he wearing the simplest of vests. Moreover - if he happens to be "charging for these trips with the ladies" he falls under commercial rules. If something went south (under those conditions) he would be in a monster world of hurt. - professional indemnity etc, etc. - Couldnt really care what Bobby does with consenting adults - but please don't put him up as a shining light of competency

You're on a boat built for more severe conditions than you were in. Sure, it's a little less comfortable, but certainly not dangerous if you know what you're doing. You're on vacation, can't just sit for a week waiting for a weather window. This happens a lot to us during crab and salmon season in the Pacific northwest....If we waited for good weather we'd miss most of the season.

I don’t argue with the decision to make that passage- Bobby and the boat were clearly capable of handling it and there were other crew that were experienced.
What I do take issue with is the apparent failure to use life jackets and lifelines. In the conditions, these were a must, even on a boat of this size.

Yes, I agree entirely even Steph said she would grab a cushion if the boat tipped over. But it is not going to tip over but round up and maybe Bobby could have reduced her fears by showing how it rounds up if overpowered.
Surprised Booby did not check Windy just before departure because it would have shown the strength of the wind. André in Sydney

@@rhett7716 If the young crew all want to be sailing throughout their lives, then they have to get occasional peaks at difficult conditions, and as you said, wind direction could have been far more challenging, and of course boat could have been smaller as well. That was exciting. In most cases it's wise not to go out in such strong winds. On the other hand given the three day forecast the conditions were going to get much worse in Mykenos and being in an unprotected harbour can be much worse, so I think you made the right choice. You had three highly experienced sailors on board, a sound sailboat and most of the sailing was downwind, which greatly reduces the speed of the apparent wind. Clearly, where you ended up offered much greater protection in the lee of the island, even for having to anchor outside the harbour. Hopefully you will get a mooring the next day.

Yes you should have gone out. What kind of sailing does fair weather sailing make of the sailor, just saying. If you can't sail the big stuff what happens when you out at sea and the big stuff hits you. WHat you gonna hit the eject button? Boats don't have eject button. You could heave to or put the boat in irons but again what kind of a sailor does that make you. Bobby you guys did just the right thing. A fun day at sea see....! I would love to join your crew for a real sailing trip one day. I just completed my Transportation Canada NBSS competency exam and hopefully by next weekend have completed the Simply Sailing Basic Cruising Skills. The goal is IYT as quickly as I can manage so I can competently sail with any crew anywhere in the world. So don't be surprised when I come knocking on your door for experience miles/hours for my log book so I can get through the requirements of the course. 30+ kts seems a bit edgy, but it looks like you didn't have much fetch, so the sea conditions didn't deteriorate too much. Happily the charter company kept the rig in good condition and nothing broke. Putting out a handkerchief-size jib made sense - just enough to give some directional stability. You did scare the bejesus out of some of your crew, which is a negative. And I think tying in to the boat in these conditions would have been advisable. As always, the boat was up to the challenge. The question would be whether the crew was as well.

I think Flor is the most adventurous. The windier and rougher it gets, the more she smiles.
See no reason not to have sailed. Made sense to head for a place with a better forecast. That boat is more than seaworthy for ocean sailing.

Enjoyed the ride today. Not sure it's up to us to judge if you should have gone. It's up to the captain to know the capabilities of their ship and crew and add a safety margin to make the call. I think you have enough miles under sail to know. Since you had another experienced captain, I would have gone for it. That's what reefs are for, except I would have insisted on lifejackets on deck and been tied off if you had to go forward.

Nice one Bobby. You should start a sailing channel lol 😆
Jokes lol . Was good to see you handling some 🌊 again .
You know in aviation we have a name for this. Gotta get there syndrome.
But in this case it actually looked like fun.
    Cheers🍻⛵️

I have raced in 50 knot winds what a Rush. Them Ladies need to get more adapted to what needs to be done if Bobby is Hurt. Make it a video for all to see! Fun is fun. But life can change in a few minutes! Also funny to see no Drinking in this video!

My most memorable sailing has been 40kts plus, if you get it right. It's hard to forget. It's a bit like "I hope we get in soon" but then it's like "man, how awesome was that!!"

No lifejackets and nobody clipped on. Foolhardy on the extreme.

I like to watch heavy weather sailing ever since I watched S.V. Delos sail the east coast of Africa. I also watch lots
of Eric A. Taking the boat out in 40+ knot sea was worthy of a true captain. The video showed that some of the
girls got a little worried about the conditions however I believe the Beneteau could handle twice the conditionds.

Great video as always! Loved seeing the catamaran ferry as they are made in my home town in Tasmania, Australia. A company called Incat build them to go fast in any weather, and just pierce through the waves! Impressive vessels!

Would not have been worth it if you lost the crew or the boat. No Life Jackets in those seas. How silly. Steph was right to worry. She needed to put on safety equiptment. Holding onto a seat cushion would have been impossible.

Tuff Call Bobby. If you thought you were going to get all beat up staying, then you made the right call. Good job to you and the crew. Stay safe.

42 knots and not a life jacket to be seen. Tsk Tsk. I'm not usually one for the safety police but its clear that given the reactions of the crew to a mild heel that they aren't experienced in these types of conditions.
