Stopped on my 43rd birthday Xmas day 2023. I’ll keep watching and listening for your wise words as I sit here, feeling someone feels the same, started therapy, and all is going well so far. New hobbies. Become selfish and look after ones self for once and dealing with it head on. Hats off on your first year Tim. 🎉

This is my second go at this, as I commented on another video of yours, Tim. Day 11 without a drink today and the past two nights have sucked. However, I’m sleeping a lot better and have more energy in the day, already - in spite of the fact I am currently going through a period of very low mood. In fact, yesterday I was 95% in favour of putting everyone else out of my misery. The only thing that stopped that developing further was visualising my daughter’s and my partner’s faces, once they’d received the news.
I work in an environment where there aren’t many successful people and most are negative about most things. Therefore, I’m trying to listen to as many people who are better than me, have achieved more and that have overcome massive challenges, as possible - usually via podcasts. Largely, they’ve helped, but yesterday was a bad, bad day.
Life seems very messy at the moment, and I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be here for, but I’m fucking determined to be the best I can, and that started with stopping alcohol and starting exercise.
Those of you who are also on this path, keep moving!
    Best to you all.

That's good Neil, talk it out and it does get WAY better but it will take a few weeks, months and (apparently) years before we feel totally normal. Personally I celebrated the first week. first month, month 3, 6 and then the year as real milestones and I was also told that those REALLY bad times are just the tests that we learn from and each time we have a test (REALLY bad time and we don't succumb to the drink) we pass that test.
You are becoming an inspiration to those around you, you just don't see it yet - you need to be the change that they need to see.
Legend Neil, legend - keep it up buddy.

Hi Tim. I decided to give up alcohol completely on January 1st. I'm in my mid-fifties and have had a decent 'relationship' with alcohol for a good few years. Just like you, it has started to have a bigger negative effect on me (mentally and physically) than a positive one. Not least the anxiety I was feeling about my health in the last couple of years, but also the sheer cost of the stuff. I had a couple of half-hearted attempts at giving up last year, but having watched your vlog on this back in December, something about it inspired me into doing something about it once and for all.
I think the secret is retrain the way we think about alcohol, and for me, taking it off the pedestal that fools me into thinking it makes my life better when it doesn't in so many ways. Like you say, it's not an easy thing to do, but for me, the benefits of not worrying about that 'ache' in the side, or seeing another tenner crashing into a recycling bin of an evening is what has pushed me into saying enough is enough. I'm also getting into the fitness, more cycling than gym and the wife and I are planning a ski trip next January. So it's definitely a good reason to get the knees back into shape.
Thanks for the great vlogs Tim and thanks for sharing your journey. It's truly good to be on it with you.

Yes, look at alcohol as the thing that limits you - the mind adjustment I do find is the key to it all.

Tim, you’re a star! No doubt about it. I’m not bothered by alcohol, and don’t smoke, so don’t relate perhaps as much as I should. I would still say, well done to you and everybody who has the strength of character to ‘stop’ drinking. Well done to you all, good luck for the future. Thank you for the vid.

Great video again. 3 takeaways: 1. If you’ve stopped from alcohol addiction for any length of time you may come to realise you’ve been ill for a long time. 2. You don’t quit an illness as Tim says. You wake up from it. You recover. If you’re lucky enough. And that’s the opportunity. Many don’t get that. And, 3. You’ll have to learn to deal with raw emotions. Not bury or numb them. But if you can face them and sit with those feelings after time the relief you’ll feel will be like nothing you’ve ever experienced.

4 years sober here, and one thing I would recommend is.....make a promise to a loved one that you won't break ! Mine was my children, and that was the drive I needed to stay on track. I know its harder for some and believe me its been hard for me, but it does get easier over time.

2 years, 7 months and counting. One (perhaps major) thing is how to handle social events where other people drink. I don't want to avoid these events, because I enjoy my friends, so what I do is to always order sparkling water with some ice and perhaps lemon or lime. It tastes great and you have something in your hand as the rest of the bunch. If you drink something (water), nobody's paying attention and you don't feel awkward and you don't have to explain yourself. At least it works for me. I'm not going back to alcohol, because I enjoy my new brain and less anxiety.

Embrace the suck. if you are reading this, then you are one of the lucky ones. Stopped the grog a while back. Never felt better. Am now it a place where can either take it or more often that not - leave it. Sugar was a struggle. Moved to stevia as a replacement for sugar in food prep. Use flavoured drops to liven up porridge - spices to wake bland food. The edge of comfort is where growth lives. One life. Make it count 👊😎👊

I know this video is a bit old but just to share where I am.
Longest I’ve ever gone is a month without alcohol. I genuinely felt better for it, naturally but as a habit it’s usually once the kids have gone to bed and I’ve no one to talk to so I open a bottle of whatever , wine or vodka. Just to take the edge off boredom. It’s literally boredom I think, which is mad because I’m probably the most multi faceted person you’ll ever meet. Loads of interests in various things but I just get lazy and can’t be arsed doing anything. Which is fair enough after running around after 3 boys but I need to replace that habit with the gym and get back into shape.
It no small feat to stop drinking and hats off to you if you manage. We’re all in this together and seeing videos like this makes me feel less alienated. ❤

Yep. I am sober since New Year. I was a binge drinker. Could drink continuously for hours and still feel relatively sober. My eldest who is 20 said at the weekend, 'Dad, you will be drinking again within a couple of weeks'. Initially I was pretty annoyed at his comment but now, I feel motivated by it. Good luck to all in their pursuit of sobriety and thanks Tim for inspiring me to do this.

I had a couple of pints of bitter the Saturday before New Year's eve. Not enjoyable at all. Decided to stop then.
On Wednesday I self tested for Covid19, which explains the lack of enjoyment regarding beer.
That's the answer, catch Covid19, then If you have a splitting headache you won't know if it is withdrawal systems or illness.
Tried a drink yesterday and woke up feeling dreadful. I just had to try.
Currently running a spreadsheet to see how quickly money is saved.
    Good luck all.

I kid you not, back in December 2020 I knew I had Covid when one evening I had a swig of raspberry vodka and couldn’t taste or smell anything except alcohol vapour … a few days later I got the positive PCR results via text & email. Although I do laugh about it now, in reality it is a bit of an indictment of my past lifestyle that it was booze that brought my attention to my Covid infection 🥴

I consider myself to be a drinker, but a sober one Tim. I believe that (only) wine and beer in moderation with the very odd over indulgence to be acceptable. However, I have always abstained for periods throughout my life and stopped drinking on the 2nd of January this year for a targeted 3 months. So far I haven’t had any problem with no after effects. I can go to the pub, go to parties and simply not drink alcohol, with coconut water my preferred tipple. I don’t physically feel like I’m missing out … as yet anyway.
Why am I doing it? Well I’m due my Class 2 medical on the 28th of February and last year I had slightly high blood pressure for the first time ever which did come down after relaxing in the waiting room. At the time, I was convinced it was due to a very stressful rush hour drive up the M40 to see the MO, but in the back of my mind I also felt it was possibly the result of too much beer the months before the medical. This year I want no such scare and have booked my appointment for later in the day to negate the effects of the drive.
The long and the short of it is that I’ve deliberately set myself a 3 month no drink target to test myself and see if I can continue for another month after my targeted medical date has been met and the pressure is off. If I’m feeling good, I may go back to abstemious drinking, or maybe decide to stop all together. Whatever happens, I am determined to make it to the end of March at least.
Sorry for the long winded comment, my major point is that targets are necessary for self discipline, at least for me and having lived my life believing in the old adage that anything in moderation is good for you, when it comes to alcohol I may decide in this case that enough is enough, but without the pressure of not having to say never ever again…

I truly believe that our 'cure', for want of a better word, is on the other side of the darkness or the struggle and each time we feel the low points, they do get a little easier, we just have to get through them one at a time.
A good phrase I once heard, not sure it will help you at all, but it was 'the devil always comes for those who are meant to shine the brightest'.
Whatever you think about it, I always think 'what if I was placed here to do something, and the devil tried to stop me and I gave into him.' Use the 'devil' to be whatever you want, it doesn't have to be spiritual but that sometimes drags me through the dark times as does the thought that the Government wants us all to die early!

I haven't had an alcohol addiction, although I drank plenty in my early 20s, however, I have known many who have been abusing alcohol. And I very rarely drink myself. That being said, I have stopped smoking weed for the past 2 months. It was a habit I formed 10 years ago when it became legal here in Oregon. It was my choice so that I could have a clearer head and make better decisions toward my self-control, and focus on my goals more. I have never really been one to have and remember my dreams at night, however these past two months I have been tormented by night terrors and nightmares nearly every single night. But I am doing much better. I started recording my own videos for TH-cam to help hold myself accountable and to express my feelings, and I have been really focused on saving that money I was spending on weed for DCS modules and a nice joystick, and have been really focused on school and learning the F-4E.
You are all doing great and I am proud of everyone taking steps to improving their lives and their health.

    Well done,great message Tim
I'm in a West of Ireland town, was 13 pubs before lockdown, now only one full time plus 5 part time.
They are the centre of the community, get to hear what is going on,have a laugh(or a cry) places to talk and rub shoulders, get out of the house.
When a guy has too much, can rely on bar-tender to send him home, nasty guys are barred.
Perhaps by me mingling with these guys I'm biased, but for most of us it is our ONLY social interaction, antidote to solitude .
I get what you are saying about joining a club so as to be expected to be somewhere, but very few all male spaces remain and you know the dynamics of mixxed company.
I manage to have three "dry"days a week, and occupy those day on internet. and I take heart at the recent "push-back"against woke ideology.
Like in the UK,pressure is building against foriegn beggars invading us too,and pretty soon we will notice "the emporer has no clothes"

Got IVF coming up which was a driver. So don't think I would have stopped otherwise (only 12 days so far). However, the weird thing is haven't thought about alcohol much at all or craved it. Thought I really would, in lockdown I got into the habit of drinking a bottle of wine or a few pints every (sometimes two bottles!) No hangovers ever. Will have to see when I don't have a strong reason not to. But at the moment it seems like I was doing it out of habits I developed over the non-sensical lockdowns.

Another excellent video Tim, I was an Army aviator and was drinking every night that I could. Never drank in the day and thought I could keep hold of it, but I was spending over £20 a day and not even getting a buzz anymore.
I now have a pint on a Monday after touch rugby, and mostly can keep away from it, but the temptation to just pop out for a few is nearly always there.
It’s tough but I go for walks and don’t keep booze in the house and it does get easier. My waist has shrunk and my bank balance has grown exponentially.

As you say, I have a dependancy. 5 pints is now 6/7 and wine with food…..but managed to cut the wine down, from a bottle a night. but beer is issue….like you have said 4pints…isn’t enough, 5/6 is a buzz/12 pints would be a dream.
I have periods where I have been AF for 3/4 months…..but the depression hasn’t improved(‘no incentive)/Alchol charities won’t help with depression, doctors won’t help with depression(it’s called dual diagnosis/I think) and it’s such a cyclic situation and then I lose interest in interests(flightsimming/modelling aircraft) and change interests to lift mood which costs a§ fortune.
    I’m fortunate, I have a supportive wife…..which I know I know I properly don’t appreciate like I should..
Your videos inspire me….dont worry about keeping them short….just keep them coming.
AM I IN A SPIN all is it INVERTED as a Hunter….
    Thx Tim

You are so right Tim, quit and responsible all negative towards the individual by manufactures. Cutting right back and having the no alcohol beers and to be fair it’s not bad. Looking to go 100% on alcohol free alternatives as changeover strategy and then off. I didn’t drink much to be honest but found myself have a beer or two most nights so thought sod it cut right back. Great countryside for sure 😀😀

Add to that governments of all flavours like you to drink, brings in a lot of tax. Not sure what the alcohol free beer world is like in the UK, but over here in Bavaria (of all places) they have mastered the art of alkoholfrei beer that taste identical to its alcohol equivalent. And it’s not seen as a soft drink. Just a life choice.

Tim I'm thinking of stopping but I have some friends 60th coming up and everyone will be drinking, then it'll be Christmas, New Year etc. I packed up some years ago when I had a serious med condition and was off it for 7 months. I'd like to again before it affects my health. I get bored though as I head towards 70.

I go to the village pub most days in the evening. I cook with wine like Keith Floyd but its long gone by the time I eat it not from drinking but from the evaporation in the pan. I worked in the middle east for the USAF during the Iraq war and as a contractor we worked under general order number one. No drinking, no Drugs and no shagging the customer, that was mainly the lady soldiers. I found it to not be a problem as the environment had no drink available so we just got on with it. On rotating out for R and R I was in Dubai where bars located in hotels had export grade rocket fuel beer and the police, although strict acted fairly so as long as you didnt cause any greif you just turned right and followed the wall back to the hotel. A good alternative social environment would be good to cut down or stop for periods of time. I did 3 months behind the wire at a time and the only exitement was the kassam rockets coming in at night and counting the ever louder bangs and working out if I am inline for a hit was on the cards. But all said. Good on you. I would like to see a large gathering of supporters one day in an appropreate venue. Any gliding clubs near you? We had one in Whitfield near Dover but alas the property is now no longer available.

Hi Tim and I must wish you Happy New Year and to you and your family and friends . We are both RAF at least an ex Forces background and to be fair Royal Navy , Royal Air Force or Marines or Army we know back in our day it was a drinking culture . And if you didn't back then you was considered different if not strange . And I understand drinking is bad more so as we get older and we process much slower so .....yes maybe no hang over but you feel like shit longer ( as in tired ) . And I understand stress and we all of us at some point we will have experienced it , we all do mostly through life . If you haven't then you are very lucky and long may that be . However I drink less now then when I was younger , age does matter for most but for most you are messing with your mind and body. I still drink some times to relieve stress , im a Union Rep where I work but even on my Off time im working and even going in on my days off . Im never fully off even though im off im working . It Takes up a lot of personnel time but so far we have to say we have won . Which despite the highs and the lows ....not many lows so far makes me more confident and happy . How ever we all need time away for ourselves and we all need a holiday . Make the most of it and enjoy that time away . It's your time make it special .

Thank you, Zeberdee - can't be easy as a Union rep, busy work and yes, our military time was very alcohol intensive - thanks for your comment, much appreciated.

I have had to stop. The RAF have taken my driving license off me and will kick me out just before my pension in 12 months. Do not go for help in the services. Do it externally! Classed as a dependant and nowhere near it, so wrong and my voice is pointless against the med chain. Ah well, role on this year and hopefully normality and a life back.

    • @FastJetPerformance
      @FastJetPerformance  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Tell them you'd like to start a Service Complaint against them (mumble something about inappropriate behaviours or bullying by med staff) and ask how you do it - they tend to treat you more respectfully when they think you might do that.

I had an old friend called Dave, he flew tornadoes, a fantastic person. The RAF screwed him over, his alcohol use became a massive issue for him. Thankfully he got himself back on the straight and narrow again. Good luck I hope it works out for you too.

Tim, yep probably him, his brother carried on serving in the RAF and rose to a lofty rank. I had a lot of respect for Dave and still do, I think he’s working as a civilian instructor at Cranwell now. You’ve done really well with your abstinence. I’m an ex Bootneck and spent years drinking, including with Dave, I’ve gave up because of weight gain, I’m like you my body could soak up a lot of alcohol and I still functioned well. Well done for helping others.👍

Thanks Tim it must be hard to open up all the time don't these topics to camera knowing some people will judge, in the same way we all knowing our unknowingly judge someone we see begging on street corners? But alcohol and tobacco are as hard to kick that worse things. Are we naturally sociable or unsociable? Your comment saying you don't have many around you is that be choice? Take care my friend!

    • @FastJetPerformance
      @FastJetPerformance  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

That is through choice yes, I don't have children and I find that people talk about them a lot at the moment as they approach university age. I do have men around me but I just choose quite a solitary path, I'll try and explain better in a video one day.

Don't use the term alcoholism but you need to use alcoholic own your guilt

    • @FastJetPerformance

I'm not guilty of anything, you live with with whatever terms you want. The term alcoholic is often what keeps people drinking for fear of being labelled as such. Everyone is on a different journey.
