  • In this episode of the 'Solutions With David Ansara' podcast I speak with public intellectual and author, Songezo Zibi, about his latest book, 'Manifesto: a New Vision for South Africa'.
Songezo and I speak about why he chose to leave a successful career in corporate communications to co-found the Rivonia Circle, a new think-tank focused on civic education.
We speak about the crisis of leadership in South Africa, and the reasons why the African National Congress has failed to govern the country properly.
Songezo and I debate the role of the state in economic development, and why civil society groups and organised business should be more active in shaping the political and policy agenda.
Songezo has longer-term political ambitions, and we speak about why he is reluctant to join one of the more established opposition parties.
We conclude by addressing one of South Africa's holy cows: race-based empowerment.

Great interview David and Songezo. Songezo is spot on. I would also highly suggest we bring back the apprenticeships program. We are blindly obsessed with University Degrees etc, when the country DOES NOT require it. We need trades men and women.

Here isa starting point: Make it mandatory for all MPs, MPCs, mayors, et al :
1.send their children to non-fee paying schools.
2.use only clinics and state hospitals for treatment of their family menbers.
    3. use public transport, or drive themselves, without protection, blue lights etc.
    4. pay for all services - lights, water, sanitation, cellphones, data etc.
    5. undergo lifestyle audits annually.
This would bring them face to face with the lived reality of ordinary people.

Songeza Zibi's non-partisan, pro-active and sensitive position is a welcomed voice in the wilderness. Thanks for this inspiring interview. We must beware of the involvement corporations in politics. The government of America has been captured for decades by corporations and have wreaked havoc around the world while disempowering and disabling their own people and those in their global sphere. I would be interested in discussion on Portugal's political method here.

Good, probing interview @David. I think he’s on the right track, but let’s see if his actions speak louder than his words. At this point, all politicians are the same & appear to only be in it for themselves. Identity politics & race-based policies have to come to an end if this country is ever going to prosper & succeed.

I really enjoyed listening to Mr Zibi. I think his comments about civic duty (as a citizen and a business) were particularly encouraging. His observations about coalitions were very profound in my view - the end of ideological and ad hominem bargaining, as opposed to direct and detailed policy proposals makes so much more sense. As we enter what many are calling an "era of coalitions", such counsel would serve us all well. Overall, a great exchange and debate. Thank you. Ideas DO matter.

The sad thing is mainstream media hardly give a platform to people like Songezo. People who happen to be black but do not paddle the gibberish of 'black victimhood'. We all have a responsibility. Firstly each individual bis responsible for their own life. What they eat; what they wear; shelter;... Then we are responsible for assisting those close to us. And then with our surplus we contribute to society as a whole. This nonsense of waiting for handouts from government needs to stop...

Unfortunately the people who need to hear this the most will not.

I agree with his comments in general (I thoroughly enjoyed this interview), my slight concern is on how he views addressing the socials ills of the past, which were caused by hateful apartheid policies. It's something that needs to be addressed, I agree fully but should it be government's job to do that and not civil societies? Maybe, I feel like this because BEE's outcomes have enriched a few at the cost of many. What else can be done by government to shore up BEE policies? They always refine it with even worse outcomes.
I agree fully on helping the under-privileged through bursaries, up-skilling projects in underprivileged areas, etc. But on the other hand you don't want to promote bad behavior by rewarding it. Granting people grants who are young and healthy enough to work because someone got pregnant while unemployed inevitably leads (as well meaning as it is) to more pregnancies.
For me the biggest thing that needs to be achieved going forward in SA is how to encourage/ maintain two parent homes that lead to better outcome for children. (If not two parent homes, how do we as South African men bring back pride in being an involved father and shame in being uninvolved)

Only 359 views? More South Africans need exposure to these ideas.

hehe you started with zille and it took you 59 episodes to get a black south african politician to speak about solutions:) wow man! the channels content and concept seem helpful but seems like the age old lets come with a solution without actually explaining and understanding the fundamental problems or am i missing something?
