  • What is a Bar Mitzvah?
A Bar Mitzvah is a traditional ceremony in the Jewish tradition when a boy/girl become man/woman at the age of 13 for boys and 12 for girls. The definition of bar mitzvah comes from two words, “Bar” which mean “Son” or “Bat” which means “daughter”, and “Mitzvah” which translates from Hebrew “Commandment”.
The word “Son of Commandment” Originally came from the Aramaic language, which was spoken, between the Jewish people and some of the Middle East from around 500 B.C.E. to 400 C.E.
The Ceremony was build to evaluate the bar mitzvah boy on responsibility, engagement, loyalty, respect and much more…, which can relate to what qualities man/woman gather with knowledge from life. When a boy starts to study his Parasha from the Torah, they are given couple of week’s preparation for the big event, just like we prepare ourselves to a presentation in school.
At the day of the big ceremony, the entire family and friends of the family come together at the synagogue to celebrate and support the transformation of the Bar Mitzvah boy. The celebration begins with the first aliyah where the bar mitzvah boy will be called up to recite the torah reading blessing at first the torah and then beginning with his assigned section.
When the Bar Mitzvah boy is done with the reading, he is greeted with flying candy coming across the room, which symbolizes celebration. At that moment the father of the bar mitzvah boy, which was standing by him during the reading blesses his son with these words “Baruch She-p’tarani” which thanks God for freeing the father from responsibility for the child's behavior, signaling a transition of control and hence responsibility from parent to child.
