I was raised Catholic and in November of 1995 my long time childhood friend who I have known since I was a new born baby had her Bat Mitzvah at 13 years old. The special thing about my friend and I we knew each other since we were babies in the NICU. My friend was born with Down Syndrome and I was born prematurely with a major medical problem. Our incubators were both next to each other in the corner of the NICU. Our parents got to know each other during that time in the NICU and when it came to be our turns to finally go home our parents kept in touch (now this was back in 1982 but hey they exchanged household phone numbers and addresses back then so it was all good). Growing up my friend and I and our families did a lot together. We invited each other to our houses for dinner, birthday parties and since my family is Catholic and my friend's family is Jewish we shared a lot of our religious beliefs, traditions, and learned a lot from one another. In 1995 when my Friend and I turned 13 my friend and her family was going to share one of those Jewish traditions with us, they invited us to my friend's Bat Mitzvah. Being that my friend has Down Syndrome and has learning disabilities, studying hebrew and the torah was going to be a challenge. Thanks to the guidance of her father, her Rabbi, and a lovely and very patient Canter my friend was able to get through her studies. My friend was so determined to become a Bat Mitzvah and that determination payed off. On the day of her Bat Mitzvah she blew us all away. She did an AMAZING job. She made her parents, family, friends, and the whole congregation so so proud.

BTW - Orthodox jews only celebrate Bar-Mitsvah (for boys aged 13) and not Bat- Mitsvah (for girls aged 12). In Israel girls celebrate their Bat-Mitsvah usually by throwing a party but not a religious ceremony. American Jews who are mostly "reform" jews - do perform religious ceremony for girls as well.

For 17 years from mid-1970s-early 90s, I was Washington, DC area's foremost (and only) Gentile Bar Mitzvah photographer, a totally accidental hobby profession. At one time the rabbi in my town, who became a good friend, and I were comparing notes on who had done more B'nai Mitzvot. I was ahead something like 400-350 (but I worked at most shuls in our area, and he did only his own congregation. It was a chance to learn more about the rich Jewish traditions and not coincidentally my own mainstream Protestant faith. At the time my real job was as a government Arabic translator and I had a Masters in Middle East Studies which naturally included Islam. This rabbi invited me to give lectures to his confirmation class on comparative religion not only on my religion but on elements of Islam as well. I gave up photography when my financial goals for the hobby were met. I had financed my two kids' college educations with the proceeds from this hobby-profession.

I wonder if you might be willing to do a video explaining (or justifying depending on your particular predisposition) your decision to inculcate a religious ideology in your children without first presenting them with a multitude of options. It is very hard to break from the dogma of religion within one's family, and I think it would be prudent for all parents to understand the vitality of the child's autonomy in this regard; I sure as hell was never given any alternative options, and to this day my mother insists that I must believe in god (which I certainly do not).

'Twas not his money in the first place, one cannot donate what one did not first earn. This is what is so enraging about the practice of circumcision, the Abraham sacrifice was intended to be a choice, granted to individuals, and the pain of that sacrifice is a crucial aspect of it's purpose. The practice of circumcision on infants is not just barbaric, it's also not fulfilling of the religious purpose.

My husband, his father, passed away a couple years ago, and the growth I have seen in this child of mine has been remarkable. He became closer to God and his Savior on his own. He is preparing to serve a mission for our church...something I never thought he would do and he is doing it all on his own. I have not pressured him. They have been his decisions. Speaking with him about his beliefs and spiritual experiences never ceases to amaze me. Congrats to you for being such a good and worthy influence in your children's lives.

I actually really get what he’s saying. There is a sense of identity/belonging that I think really lacks in evangelical Christianity. That’s not a slam on evangelism, I think it’s just the result of not having the deeply rooted history that follows your blood line. There’s a cultural aspect that is missing.

    I just love this lady!
On a side note, just a friendly suggestion to those folks who are sending out invitations to their child's Bar Mitzvah.
I grew up in a town that had a large Jewish community, so of course my brother and I were invited to A LOT of Bar and Bat Mitzvah. My parents used to joke about how we were toooo friendly with too many friends ;) . In the four years that we basically would be celebrating our friend's day, my parents estimated they spent about $1000 in checks written. Who knew kid's friends could be such an expensive adventure lol.
We knew what to expect in general at the event, but one of the best things we received in the invitation was an insert card that basically explained what Mayim did above. Including what to wear, were to go, what time to be picked up etc...It helped a lot.
Just a thought to those of you planing your child's Bar Mitzvah. :)

Lance Walker I think raising children without *any* religion is one of the most important things any parent can do.
Read about them with your child, answer questions, allow exploration, but no actual observed religion whatsoever. If the child is inclined at an age where they can be trusted to make such a decision (16 is a good round number), let 'em at it.
I think this would lead to more adult atheists, broader thinkers, and more people interested more in sciences. The world needs more of these types of people--especially if we want to continue advancing.

Mr. Sheasgreen, if you sometimes feel like you should convert to Judaism, maybe HaShem is calling to you. Or, maybe you already have the spark of a Jewish soul in you. Conversion to Judaism is not an easy process and may take several years (and a lot of study). However, if you are sincere about converting then look inward to find your true motivation. If you can articulate that with sincerity (mostly to yourself at first), then it may be time to talk to a Rabbi. Best of luck to you.

William James Sheasgreen -- Not to burst your bubble, but Judaism is the same as any religious tradition, in that it can have its ups and downs, its wonderful moments and its more challenging moments. Because people are people; there's a lot of variation among and between groups even within the same religion. Yes, there's a lot of love in Judaism, but if one is going to be observant, there's also a lot of practice required. You may have heard the expression, "Two Jews, three opinions." Along with the love, there's a lot of debating. Saying this not to discourage you, but to give you a realistic orientation, rather than an overly idealistic one.

Basically, he's now considered part of the adult Jewish community as far religious services. He now counts towards a Minyan. Without a Minyan, a lot of our ceremonies can't take place. This isn't a big deal for the major holidays, since there are enough bodies in attendance to count. But, for smaller things, like when a person needs to recite some prayers over the memory of a loved one during the middle of the week, this is where a minyan is important. He'll also be expected to help out in services. It includes things like reciting the blessing before anyone reads from the Torah; reading from the Torah; opening the Ark that contains the Torah; removing, carrying, and returning the Torah from/to the ark; and even smaller things like acting as an usher.
And, he can now lead a service, provided that he's knowledgeable enough. Contrary to what people think about the rabbinate, rabbis are not priests. They act as religious leaders, but that doesn't mean it's a role reserved for the rabbi alone. Any knowledgeable Jew can lead services. The Kohanim (Jewish Priests) have not been ordained as official priests since the second temple fell. We still track which families are Kohanim, both because there are a few things still reserved for the Kohanim, and one day we may rebuild our temple and will have need of official priests then. So, if Mayim's son has the knowledge (And I'm pretty sure he does, if he's Mayim's kid), in a pinch he can step in and lead a service.

Also, he's now old enough to have moral responsibility. He's now in charge of keeping the 613 Commandments, though kids in observant homes are pretty used to doing that already. Big changes are usually fasting 100% on days like Yom Kippur, putting on tefillin every non-sabbath morning, being expected to be in shul completely during prayers, etc.. You're now 'your own man' so to say, spiritually in charge of what you do and responsible for the consequences or rewards of keeping the mitvahs!

For example I was thinking that Jesus was 13 when he got lost in the temple. This is really significant in light of what Mayim is explaining. It was at my friend's mom's restaurant and we invited a lot of my family to come. It was really chill. i've never been super religious, but i wanted the experience of a bat mitzvah without the speech (yay social anxiety).

I love that he gets to be taken seriously now. I’m a Protestant Christian, and before I could partake in a certain sacrament, I had to basically memorise 52 canons of our catechism, and be grilled by a sea of old whit bearded men. Then stand in front of the congregation and participate in another sacrament, answering questions and the congregation having their chance to disagree. Yes, that was as fun as it sounds. I like doing a service project much better. I never knew Bat Mitzpha’s were done at the age of 12. I love learning about festivals, High Holy Days, and honestly enjoy everything on your site. Keep up your amazing work!

And I said " everyone said you'r a man now. Forget it!! You'r just 13! You'r a child and you have all your childhood in front of you. Your commitment for now is to have fun as far as you can" and then I cried 😂

I had my Bat Mitzvah at the age 41 at a Bronx Conservative Synagogue. I didn’t read the Maftir because it was more than 10 lines. So what did I chant instead : one of the longest Haftorah portions from the prophet, Ezekiel. I had a small party after Services and then went with my husband, my mother, and a friend to an Israeli nightclub, Cafe Baba, in Queens to celebrate. When the MC announced my name and that I was celebrating my Bat Mitzvah, everyone was looking for a 12 year old girl to stand up. I timidly got up. What a great memory. I am so proud that I was a Bat Mitzvah.

Your passion inspires me! Thank you for showing us the joy of your faith and love for your family. I think, as a Christian, one of the questions I've often had, is understanding the Jewish perspective on Jesus, and who He was. As a Seventh Day Adventist, I believe in keeping the 10 Commandments and I read the old testament books with great respect for the history of the Jewish nation.
The mystery (for me) has always been how Jewish people understand the life of Jesus.
Hope to hear your thoughts on this.

To give back and contribute..etc. Congrats to your son. I know he will make you even prouder than you already are! All the best! Ciao4now 😁
