    Edit: in the event that this video leaves my normal audience, this video is focused on pvc scale figures. articulated figures and resin/polystone statues are better about making male characters.
    Happy Sunday everyone. Hope you're having a good weekend. Alright so quick notes here. Part 2 was originally a bit longer, but I ended up removing some questions simply because I felt like I could answer them better if I had more time to think about it and write down my thoughts. It's very easy for me to miss some points I'd like to make when I go in blind essentially. Some off the top of my head were: Feelings of getting too old for the hobby, Younger collectors wanting to get into the hobby, How I got into xenoblade(legit this part was like 8 minutes on its own and killed the pacing lol) and my most sentinmental figure. I plan to talk about all of this and more at a later date when I find appropriate(and perhaps in seperate videos), so no worries there, but yeah not editing this video for like a month and coming back to it is bad for me because I know I'm just going to want to redo the whole thing lol. Even with some questions left in I wish I answered them a bit better, such as the lack of male figures. That's a huge topic to get into and I know I missed some details, but we can always revisit it another time. For now we must move on so I can hopefully get one more haul video out before December ends.

    When it comes to male figures, while there are a decent amount like from Shonen series, the thing is they are still catered to the male gaze, or created with men in mind. The male figures are cool, the female figures are often done sexy or provocative,; they're made with male buyers in mind.
    I think that's the difference. There are way more figures made for male audiences, even when they are male figures. It's super rare to have male figures done with a female gaze in mind. I think I could count on one hand just how many are. (And that doesn't count Shonen male figures that women figure collectors personally find attractive). I think that's an important distinction to make with male figures in this hobby.

    • @ZuccoFigures
      @ZuccoFigures  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      I 100% agree and wish I thought to speak about that at the time of recording. Gacha and OCs kind of imply that based on the nature of their designs more of the time, but it's still worth pointing out. I think the problem with Sexy male figures though is that they simply target a smaller audience. I think its safe to say that female collectors are much more open to the types of characters and figures they like to collect, perhaps due to the lack of choice, but I've seen tons of women who love sexy female figures. Most guys on the other hand aren't looking to add sexy men half naked on their shelves unless they have an attraction towards them or there is still an element of coolness like you mentioned(of course I don't speak for everyone but based on everything I've seen throughout my many years of collecting, that's how it feels). That doesn't mean those figures shouldn't exist, they definitely should, but companies know that and most likely stay away to play it safe.

      @@ZuccoFigures Oh agreed! They don’t bother to make them because as you said, women will gladly buy the female figures but men wouldn’t often buy the male figures if done in the same vein as female designs. Sad but true unfortunately.
      I don’t know the scope of female collectors, but it is definitely growing. I’d compare it to the video game community that took a very long time to finally cater to its many female fans, I’d say figure collecting is in a similar timeline just very early. Hoping one day the manufacturers will wake up to the many women collectors in existence. Hoping for that risk, so they can see just how wanted those types of figures are :)

      Uh idk I mean look at the male resin especially the JJK... they are uh very explicit versions but yes they are resin thus more expensive then PVC plastic figs... idk how id feel if suddenly theyd make male bare chested... but I have noticed some of them wearing tight clothing and showing their muscles through the shirt... im a fan of JJK which has attractive men so again as an example Toji showing his full on muscles through his clothing and Gojo Luminasta being tight on his chest showing his lanky abs... idk how they can make them anymore sexy then that when it comes to shounen figs accurate to the manga anime. If the manga anime was explicit like how hentai exist for males then yeah wed probably see figures for the men like that but reverse hentai doesnt really exist, Otomes or reverse harem do it just so happens they arent as popular. Like if we talking about targeted female franchises like say Genshin Impact in which the males are all attractive and alot of femboi then yeah we got those figures for female gaze all prim and proper bleh.
      The issue I see really is the lack of acceptance some women are into more explicitly stuff and mayhaps the market is small unfortunately so they wont risk it idk

    • @Msis03
      @Msis03 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@semekiizuio Granted those Resin figures you’re referring to with explicit natures aren’t licensed, they’re unofficial, which just shows the nature of figures some people actually want that won’t be risked or attempted by the bigger manufacturers, so unlicensed companies step up to the plate.
      And while sexually explicit figures are abundant with female figures, I don’t necessarily mean all male figures with a female gaze need to be sexual in nature. Its just they don’t branch out to other series that cater to more women then men. While women love JJK, men often don’t given Shoujo series a chance, they think it’s just romance and fluffiness when a lot is drama and deep story based, just as much as Shonen, sometimes more. It’s really just the bigger companies catering to men more then women. Which wouldn’t even be too bad if they didn’t at least try to branch out a bit more then the same 3 series lately.
      It’s all like 3 gacha games that blend together at this point and all end up tanking in price cuz the market is inflated, and two big Shonen flavor of the week. It makes figure announcements so boring lately :/
      At this point, any male figure is just dude in action pose with some flame or electric attack effect piece. Those one or two that actually differ are in the minority unfortunately.

    • @semekiizuio
      @semekiizuio 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@Msis03 you have a point, they are unlicensed.
      I just feel its going back to the same problem, women not being allowed to like shounen genre, not being allowed or rather difficult to get a foot in the same league as male mangakan, the shounen manga being male dominated. Thats very slowly changing as well as how anime/manga has become more popular and has shown girls have always liked ike shounen. And you do have a point as well that the men dont give Shoujo an opportunity when there are very good ones with plot focus dynamics not just emotional drama.

    We could see more male figures from fate, genshin, fire emblem, honkai etc. Especially with Loid we saw how companies treat male characters. Many price figures, but only 1 or 2 scales. Such a waste that GSC never made one...
    Would also like a Sora to go with the many Shiro's.

      There's always hope for Loid I feel, but it makes no sense how they didn't do it right away. Fire Emblem so far hasn't been bad for male characters. Marth Ike and Roy are all really good choices, but we'll see where the line goes from here since the last few have been popular ladies

    The fact that many lead male protagonists get shafted over the female side characters on getting figures is just criminal. I'm also upset at the fact that a psycho villain that only showed up in 2 or 3 episodes of Overlord gets a figure while the important male characters get none.

    Wow thanks for going so in depth with my question! I agree with all you said unfortunately and I wish manufacturers would at least go a bit out on a limb. I collect both female and male figures and I see in comments when I post them on Reddit is people wishing for more, so I know there is totally a market for them, it’s just been untapped. I personally really want a Subaru scale from Re Zero to go with my Emilia haha. It just feels like a gap in characters, especially with male romance anime leads when only the girl gets figures. And I also know some great artists that do male oc’s that would look great as figures but unfortunately manufacturers don’t look that way 😔

      Romance protags are doomed in this industry. I always found it funny that Ryuuji from Toradora never got a single figure and Taiga has like 50 or something counting all the recolors. I do recall that one Subaru and Rem figure riding that monster but that's about it, and I think the scale on that ones a little small?(plus rem would be getting in the way I assume in your case lol)

    I really like your videos! They're very chill and you try to understand other people's preferences.
    Now onto the male figure issue which concerns me since that's what I collect the most.
    As somebody who has been playing FGO for almost 6 years, I've always been bothered by people saying that it gets a ton of figures even to this day. First off, the releases have been getting fewer and fewer over the years, especially for the nendoroids where it's really noticeable. And secondly, there have never been enough male figures compared to the popularity of the characters. Combine the two and you have more recent (4 years ago at most for an 8 year old game) really popular male characters like Ashiya Douman, Saito Hajime, Mandricardo who have really low chances of ever getting anything. They even have garage kits so the demand is there but for some reason they won't capitalize on it. So no, as somebody who's into FGO I've never been satisfied with the figure releases and it's only going to get worse.
    Thankfully one of my favorite franchises has been saving me figure-wise and that is Yu-Gi-Oh! Amakuni has blessed us with high-quality scale figures for a variety of anime characters, not just the ones from Duel Monsters! Other companies have also been making a ton of monsters but since I don't play the card game I don't care about those. I was so happy when they announced Yuuma and Astral because I never thought they would get anything. The next character I want them to make is Jack Atlas, that would be really cool!
    Finally going onto the shonen figures, I want to talk specifically about One Piece. I got into the series last year and I was thinking that I finally loved a series with a lot of figure choices but it turns out that that wasn't really the case. My two favorite characters from the series are Jinbe and Robin and I'm going to be honest and say that I don't like most of their figures. I don't really know why but they always mess up with them for me. For Jinbe, the only figure of his that I like is the Portrait of Pirates Maximum one with horrendous aftermarket prices (1000$ ouch) because all the other ones don't have enough shading and look like toys. As for Robin, most of her figures are too sexualized for me. Sure, One Piece has a bit of fanservice but with the figures they make you would think it's an ecchi show.
    Sorry for the long comment and keep up the good work!

    • @ZuccoFigures
      @ZuccoFigures  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I really do love the work that Amakuni has brought to the table for Yugioh. I still need to give 5D's a shot since my nostalgia lies in the original series and GX, but despite that I kinda wish I bought yusei since his designs pretty cool and the figure looks great to me. Not sure what they're cooking up next, but I did see a random announcement for a Tour Guide from the Underworld figure. Really random announcement, not even familiar with that card, but I gotta admit I love her design lol.
      I would have guessed most one piece fans would be happy with the selection since there seems to be so many, but I suppose when most are made by the same company and the rest are lower budget options it can still feel limited for certain characters. I get what you mean with robin though. She's certainly attractive but sometimes the sculptors try way too hard to get everyone "excited" and it can take away from the character. Partially why I don't love most resin figures and never talk about them. They feel like character assassination, but that's a different story. I genuinely don't understand how Jinbe hasn't been rereleased yet though. I'm sure it'll happen eventually but with a 10k markup or something because megahouse loves overcharging for rereleases

    • @nyapan7620
      @nyapan7620 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ZuccoFigures Yes I'm so happy that such a high quality manufacturer is the one making YGO figures! I recommend 5D's since it doesn't take time to start unlike most other YGO series. I personnally like all of the 8 series but it's hard to recommend them to people used to one cour modern anime pacing. Yusei is a great character too! As for the tour guide, she's featured a lot in the Duel Links mobile game! So I'm not surprised she got a figure.
      As for One Piece you hit the mark right on the head. The Bandai exclusivity hurts. I also totally agree with you about the resins. I hope Jinbe gets a rerelease but yeah there'll probably be a big markup unfortunately.

    People seem to forget that the simplest reason is the most obvious answer to why there are very few male figures and that is that the Japanese anime audience is mainly filled with guys so if these companies wanna make money, they will make what sells and what sells is that bought by male fans, they also don't cater or care for the audiences overseas for that matter, only the Japanese audience is what they consider to make merch for, the rest of us get table scraps.

    • @ZuccoFigures

      It's not only guys. Girls also like their fair share of female characters because they are cute.
      I guess Japanese audiences just prefer softer characters staring back at them on their shelf. I know I do. Contrast that with most guy characters these days being a little to harsh on the eyes or just too generic and you have the main culprit for the issue.

As people have mentioned already here, its all about WHO is buying these figures, and most companies think its men. Why is there a million Rem/Ram figures and only a few Subaru? Why are most of Arknights figures the female characters? Some anime do have figures of their male character(s), but a majority do not. As he mentioned, more people are buying male figures now. Seriously, this video was two weeks ago? Shit, I thought it might have been two years. I've been watching a lot of old figure content to learn what I can. Sooooo from the sounds of it, the market has produced a niche. The companies that are at the top know what sells, but this means they are blind to the niche they create, or they underestimate it. Male anime figures, licensed and OC, PG or 18 is a niche that can be taken advantage of. I know I might. How about anyone else? This is an opportunity staring the market in the face. Who's gonna jump on it?

    Model kits have the same issue with no male characters see the Gundam human kit series. Even the made for customs series like 30 Minute missions are like this. Very few antagonist of series get any figures either. Shows like Kamen Rider never make merch of any of the bad guys like ever for example.

    Five Male PVC figs I'd like to see are:
    Shulk, as you said. OR Noah, because we already have a Mio so I would want to pair them together.
    Hachiman from SNAFU, all he has is a Nendoroid which is a crime. There's been like what, 30 Yukino, Yui scales, but where's the main character?
    Reigen from Mob Psycho 100. More Mob scales in general would be nice. Feels like the series barely gets figures?
    Literally anyone from the Zero Escape series. I don't believe there's a single figure period.
    Several from Hunter Hunter. Stop teasing me with PUPs, Nendoroids and prize figures. I want a scales man. I want one for Netero, I want one for Meruem, I want for Hisoka. Give me a Chrollo. Come on. There's a goldmine waiting here.
    I don't think many of these will happen, but I hold out hope.

    • @ZuccoFigures
      @ZuccoFigures  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Need GSC or Monolith to get their head outta their ass and start making more figures for xenoblade lol.
      Hachiman should have happened already, very silly.
      Mob Psycho in general is just so poorly represented when it comes to anime figures and I have to assume it's due to the art style, which is infuriating.
      Never played Zero Escape but it took years to get anything for ace attorney so I'm not surprised sadly. Ship might have sailed for Zero Escape :(
      and yeah HxH should have been picked up by a major manufacturer by now. There's certainly a rise in figures lately even if they aren't ones you want, and a freakin fighting game was just announced for it, so maybe we'll see more in the future, who knows.

    W. The OG Bravely Default is just something special man... I liked Bravely Default II but not even close to the first one and I didn't like Second at all (The new main character... oof).
    I wish they ported the OG in HD to get it out of the 3DS but the camera stuff probably makes it hard (Probably not needed for some but it's just cool). Pls Nintendo, let the Switch 2 have a camera just for Bravely Default, thanks.
    Also, I may be moving soon too and it will be my first time after starting to collect a lot and it sounds like such a pain, I have everything out and will have to get everything in their boxes x_x

      I tried bravely second and was kinda turned off by all the reused assets for some reason. Maybe it's a good game but I didn't play it for too long.
      Last time I moved was during the summer and I didn't really trust the moving company with my figures so I went back and forth a few times with my car and boy was that fun. even outside of excess travel and sweating throughout some of these figures are just so annoying to put back into the box lol

    12:16 There’s more female figures because female figures sell, it’s as simple as that, it’s not rocket science. There’s some male characters that will sell, characters like Guts, it’s why Prime1 keeps making Guts statues and hasn’t given us a Farnese.

    Men love computer games and figures way more than women do. It's basic statistics. Money is on whatever sells, so if there aren't any figures for women - it's because the audience isn't there. Same reason there isn't a real market for small chic handbags for men.
