    WHAT IS BLEPHARITIS:
Blepharitis means inflammation of the eyelids. It causes the eyes to feel sore and gritty. It can be a troublesome and recurring condition with no one-off cure. However, once symptoms have improved, daily eyelid hygiene can usually keep symptoms to a minimum.
    SYMPTOMS OF BLEPHARITIS:
    • The main symptom is sore eyelids. Both eyes are usually affected.
    • The eyes may feel gritty, itchy or as though they are burning.
    • The eyelids may look inflamed or greasy.
    • The eyes may become sticky with discharge. In particular, the eyelids may stick together in the morning.
    • Sometimes tiny flakes or scales appear on the eyelids, which look like small flakes of dandruff. Crusts may develop at the base of eyelashes.
    • One or more of the tiny glands of the eyelids (meibomian glands) may block and fill with an oily fluid.
    COMPLICATIONS OF BLEPHARITIS:
In most cases, blepharitis is uncomfortable but not serious or sight-threatening. Complications are uncommon, here are a few but please click the link below for more:
    • Stye. This is a painful infected swelling most prominent on the outside of the eyelid. It is due to an infection of the root (follicle) of an eyelash. Contact lens wearers may find their lenses feel uncomfortable when they have a flare-up of blepharitis.
See your GP or an optometrist if you have a very painful stye that isn't getting better. If this happens, the stye may need to be drained.
Changes to the eyelashes (which mainly occur in severe and long-standing cases). These include:
    • Loss of eyelashes (madarosis).
    • Misdirection of eyelashes towards the eye (trichiasis).
    • Loss of the colour of the eyelashes (poliosis).
For more complications and what to do about them please visit:
    patient.info/h...
    www.nhs.uk/con...
    EYELID HYGEINE:
Cleaning your eyelids to remove the crusts and scales from the eyelid margins and unblock the eyelid glands. To begin with you may need to clean your eyelids twice a day. In the long-term, you will need to clean them at least two or three times a week to prevent blepharitis from returning. Please always wash your hands before and after.
Full detail in video but here is a summary:
    Warm Compress,
The purpose of warmth is to soften the skin and any crusts attached to the eyelids. It also allows the oily secretions made by the meibomian glands to flow more freely, as warmth makes oils more runny. Therefore, warmth helps to unplug any blocked glands and allow the oily secretions to flow more readily. Warmth applied to the eyelids for five to ten minutes is sufficient to do this.
    Eyelid Massage,
Massage the eyelids immediately after applying the warmth. Massaging helps to push out the oily fluid from the tiny meibomian glands.
    Cleaning The Eyelid,
After warmth and massage, clean the eyelids. This can be done by any of the following ways. There is a lack of research studies to say which is the best method, but I prefer the traditional method.
    OMEGA 3 AND BLEPHARITIS:
Omega 3 supplements have been shown to reduce the symptoms of blepharitis and eye dryness. They are not available on prescription, but you can buy them from a range of pharmacies and health food shops.
Please leave a comment below and let us know if you have taken Omega 3 and found it helpful.

I also went to my primary doctor and received eyedrops which did nothing. Then went to my eye doctor who prescribed an ointment, the warm compress, the same message technique and many follow up visits. I think the ointment kept the eyelid blocked while I paid for all those visits. Now I'm going to try the technique from this video because it makes the most sense! Hope this helps. 😁

Hi@@tonylucidi6343 , what problem you are facing. Have you get eye lid swollen after getting a white pimple on edge of the eye lid base skin and later having pain due to swelling and finally geting burst resulting in puss and blood coming out. And then the swelling goes after 2 days but this problem reappears after 4-5 days some times in same eye and some times in other eye. Continuiously suffering from this condition from last 6-8 months. I dont know what is causing this issue. But I am disappointed with eye specialist doctors of not daignosing the issue and keep on giving antibiotic ointments to put on the base of eye lashes.

Andrew Diaz I don’t surprisingly, but I suggest taking fish oil pills daily, I take them every day and they work like a absolute dream! Also if you use eye drops make sure to use ones that don’t have preservatives, some eye drops do have them and can further irritate your eyes. Personally I use Hyrdasense preservative free. And yes I did learn all this from a professional. A eye surgeon in fact!

I'm 49 now and have struggled with Blepharitis since I was a kid. After trying everything over the years I finally discovered a very successful and simple routine that changed my life a decade ago. This is what I do: I have a warm/hot shower every morning and after several minutes in the steamy wet air I take an (eye dedicated) facecloth soaked with only warm shower water (no soap) and use my index finger to perform gentle tiny circular scrubs in both a clockwise and counter-clockwise direction along both the bottom and top lids, pulling the lids open slightly with my free hand. This has done wonders for for me ever since. I now feel much more awake in the morning, where before my eyes wanted to stay shut and felt thick and would battle getting styes. I also add to this the warm compresses almost every evening for 10 minutes with a microwaveable eye gel mask and often rinse my eyes using a small cup over the sink with warm (not hot) tap water to clear any cloudy excretions or debris and I'm set. My eyes lids are no longer pink, crusty or swollen (unless I miss a day or two). Seriously, no medications or expenses. Sometimes the answers are right in front of us and can be part of other routines. Try for a week and see for your self!

*Really* appreciate your detailed, comprehensive, effective instructions. I have dry eye and blepharitis, but no ophthamologist I've visited has told me exactly how to massage or clean my eyelids. Neither have their nurse-assistants--which is actually their job, right? And a lot of people don't know that they can get information like this from a pharmacist, at least where I live (USA). Thanks for a very helpful video!

I tried soaking my eyes twice per day in a water salt solution. About 30 seconds per soak. It helped. I tried a dry compress twice per day. I was meticulous in using an eyelid cleanser twice per day. It helped. But what appeared to accelerate the style removal was ... crying. No kidding.
I watched a “tear-jerker” movie and I was streaming tears. When I woke up the next day, I noticed my style and the irritation almost gone. Over the next three days, I induced crying and my stye (which I had for about two months) was completely gone.

Over thirty years I have had several chalazions -- I don't remember ever hearing the name. These were surgically treated in the doctor's office. NOBODY ever told me that they might be caused by these microorganisms(?). Nobody ever mentioned massage. They mentioned dry eyes. They told me about hot packs but nothing about massage. It's only recently I figured out a good way to do hot packs -- I buy a pack of those round cosmetic pads. I pick up three to make a thicker pad. A pot of boiled water is on the side of the sink. I set a timer for 5-10 minutes and I hang over the sink. I dip a washcloth into the hot water and hold it on the pads over my eye -- this way, I never remove the cosmetic pads, just re-wet the water. With the radio playing, time passes. Usually the water stays very hot for more than five minutes. I may add that at the beginning when the water is just boiled and very hot, I hold the cloth NEAR my eye and can feel the heat there. I just don't touch the eye/cosmetic pads with that boiling water. It takes a minute for it to get to the right temperature.

    Hi Abraham,
My dry eye 'syndrome' came on really bad after several factors:
    1. I used a face wash which seemed to have a real drying effect on the eyelids and even caused them to look 'old-age' wrinkled.
    2. I had to start wearing masks because of the legal requirement and what I noticed was that the air was rushing between the gap is in the upper part of the mask and my face. Sadly even with careful placement as advised by health professionals, air still escapes in front of the eyes.
    3. I have to work in a cool dry environment with an over enthusiastic HVAC system (have done for many years) but the combination of the above two points may have tipped my eyes over the edge.
At the start of the week my eyes are fine(-ish) but midweek I feel like my eyes have had acid in them, and the level of bloodshot and the amount of tears streaming means I've had to take days off just to recover.
I'm gonna try your tips from today and I've started to take Seven seas cod liver oil capsules (primarily to help a dislocated finger recover - the Omega 3 may help my eyes too.) Needless to say I will be gunning for my 8 hours of sleep.
Anywhoo, thanks for the tips. I'll try and leave a reply to tell you how I got on.

I usually fill half a cup with boiling water and I let it cool down a bit so that it does not burn my skin. Then I place it in contact with the closed eye and I keep it there for a couple of minutes, until I feel that my eye starts to get moist. In this way I don't spill water over myself and I can keep the eye warm for longer.

Alexa Galbreath - I also found two more things that have helped: 1.very hot shower running on my eyes and then washing with soap and rinsing very hot
2.eyelid massages throughout the day. It (apparently) gets the oil glands flowing
With that said; my issues aren’t cured/gone. But definitely improved.

Personally I have blepharitis and I have acutally had it for 3 or 4 years, I went to multiple doctors, walk in clinics, but one night my eyes were driving me CRAZY. nothing was open so we had to go to the ER and they set me up with a appointment with a eye surgeon because they had no clue what was up either! They all told me it was dry eye syndrome and it would let go with time. Luckily my mom used to be a pharmasist and now works a different job with other trained professionals, one day I had to take the day off school it was so bad and my mom ended up telling her co worker, Justin, about it. He said that all the eye drops I had been using were WRONG. turns out alot of artificial tears (OTC) have perservatives in them that could irritate the eye further. he suggested Hydrasense PERSERVATIVE FREE and seal oil pills. worked like a dream! I take them daily now. but of course now that its finally cleared up I learned last month I have blepharitis with the eye surgeon...
In conclusion, I had blepharitis for 4 years and all the doctors in my town were idiots and didnt know what it was until I finally found the way to relieve it and THAN found a doctor that knew what she was at. also im 15 and blepharitis is more commone in 50 year olds so pretty much my eyes are 50. Thats how that works.

@@shekinahrf I’ve noticed over time that they have never really cleared up, but just gotten easier. From time to time, my eyes act up and I do take them, but most days it’s fine. For example today I did take them. Also, another thing to take into consideration that I’ve thought about sense I wrote this is that it seems to get worse during the winter/colder months. I live in Canada, meaning the air gets really dry in the winter, so maybe that could be part of it? I don’t know, but I’m going to see my eye surgeon next Monday, so I will let you know what else I learn!

@@Jenna-qp1bf Thanks so much! After seeing your comment I've done some research into presercative free eye drops, so I'm going to try that. My right upper eyelid is the only one that is red and swollen. It was diagnosed that it was blepheritis, and the doctor prescribed an ointment for me to apply under my upper eyelid and along the lash line. I’ve been doing warm compresses, and doing the ointment but my eyelid doesn’t really seem to be responding. How long does it take for my eyelid to return back to normal?

One thing not mentioned in this video are the TYPES OF EYEDROPS you use. This was advice given to me from a PROFESSIONAL.
I got blephritis about 5 years ago, just recently got diagnosed. But one thing that I was told by a EYE SURGEON was that many artificial tears/lubricants have preservatives in them that can further irritate your eyes. I was recommended Hydrasense PRESERVATIVE FREE eye drops. They work like a dream and I find they help for longer periods of time.
Bonus: I was also told this by a pharmacist; taking omega pills also help. I’ve been taking seal oil daily and I find that helps almost better than the eye drops! Would 100% consider it!

I am struggling with something similar that has definitely affected my confidence for the past year or two. I did unfortunately happen to have a chalazion each on both eyes. Seeing as I only had it checked rather than treated originally I thought it went away naturally (seeing as I was told that this could happen) because it visibly dissapeared. However lately I noticed that actually it never went away. It definitely flattened and is gladly just a soft portion of tissue at the upper edge of my eyelids rather than the bump I used to have directly on top of it. However it is also the reason why I feel huge discomfort in my eyes if I happen to rub them and does quite noticeably change my overall appearance which Im definitely not happy about. Would this treatment help in my case seeing as I've had this for the past year and it hasn't changed or should I aim to save up in order to get it surgically removed? Unfortunately I am studying at university abroad and may not be able to afford it in the near future so any other home remedy would be extremely helpful
