In this video we make progress all over the boat - the engine-room sole is laid, the diesel-engine exhaust gets installed, and Zeal joins the team again to do some caulking and fair the keel timber.
We start work inside the head, including the glamorous job of trying to position the toilet itself, and we meet Pat Mahon, who starts constructing the deck hatches!
In other news, we watch the Schooner Martha get lifted out of the water, and George finds a creative use for an original keel bolt.

The old timers who've joined the project this year have been AMAZING. What skill they bring to this inspiring project! What a gift to all of us. My interests are wide but I have to say, this channel is my favorite. It is fun to go back in time and remind myself of all the hard work that has been done, much of it by volunteers who were inspired to travel to Port Townsend to work fulfilling Leo's dream. A big thank you to everyone!
What's crazy to me is we'd never know about their expertise if it weren't for this project. How much talent is tucked into corners of the world we just don't know about as a society as a whole?

@@pauleohl I think that's a low estimate. Skilled shipwrights are expensive and teak ain't cheap.
I prefer to think of them as skilled experienced craftsmen, not old timers. I think of old timers as old men panning for gold in western movies. 😊

Quite literally the best project I have ever followed from the very first episode. A piece of maritime history re born through sheer hard work and pure craftsmanship . I look forward to every episode . That boat on completion will be a priceless national treasure loved and appreciate by millions . I tip my hat to you sir . Bloody well don sir .
It's just a never-ending stream of perfection being shown here. If boats could have halos, this one would.

I learned how to build a boat from my father who was an old time boat builder in NewEngland . The bronze piece made for finding the center line ? Had I produced a finished product like that for my father he would have had me make it over. A few pointers…
The counter sunk screw holes where much to deep, the screw heads should have been flat heads and then filed down to meet the crown of the half oval filling the entire counter sunk hole. The slots of the screw heads should have both been horizontal when completed. The piece when completed should have been sanded with fine sandpaper to a uniform shine.
Watching the video today I was surprised to see the house being installed with no vertical bolts ,bolting the house down through the deck beams. The way I was thought any structure would have these bolts and to never just use glue no mater what type of glue used or no mater the size of the house.

Zeal packing cotton into the joints on the deck is pure poetry in motion, and strangely relaxing 🙂
I've caulked a few boats and you're right, strangely relaxing. I'd get into a kind zone and the world would go away. I miss those days.

Its the repetition and establishing a rhythm and when your good and not to many hiccups, by the end of the day you can do get a lot accomplished.. very therapeutic and fulfilling
I can’t understand why you still caulk with cotton and then put a hitech flexible sealing compound over it? Why not use a sealant adhesive alone?
@@waynejorgensen4433 It's probably double the protection. If the sealant fails the cotton is still there as backup.
The last few years have been filled with trials and tribulations, happiness, sadness and despair at times. Thankfully Leo and Tally Ho have been a consistent happy port in a storm to lift the spirits. Thank you everyone involved in this fabulous project it means a lot to many of us in TH-cam land.
Gotta say there are some truly artisans working on this project. From packing and caulking to cabinets doors and that companionway in the end was some amazing work! A joy to watch

I’m a little sad to see so many pros, instead of basically one guy in his garage with maybe a few well meaning but not particularly trained friends helping him.
But I also know that that does make the difference between a life’s work and a project that might eventually finish, at least done to this standard, so there’s very definitely that.
I have watched from the beginning and I have seen willing but inexperienced volunteers being slowly replaced by professionals with a lifetime of skills and experience. The finished yacht will be a testament to Leo's vision and dogged persistence. Well done!

As a former MEA (shipwright) in the RN, It's just wonderful to see that the old skills are still available through young and old. I wish I was not so knackered, as I would have loved to have been able to help in thia amazing restoration . Good luck young man, you deserve it.

as an aerospace worker, it's easy to see how Artemis is safely sailing the vacuum sea. we learned highest quality from our boat-building ancestors, personified in Leo, Patrick, Richard, Zeal, and all the other patient perfectionists.
This boat is so darn beautiful, you guys are incredible craftsmen. Can’t wait to see all this pay off.

I like the “louvred doors” bit when the “staff / colleagues / friends..”is working hard to make sure it’s all good, then silently Leo comes to have a final check at them, ….priceless… da boss!
I think I could see just how much Leo appreciated the quality of those louvred doors - he did not have to say a word, we could see he was content with the quality. My only wish would be to have seen the set up for routing of the grooves in the side frames. Such amazing skills. How many American or other high schools still teach woodwork? 5%??
Every kid these days wants an MBA or some useless degree, nobody wanrts to follow trades any more - perhaps the children of artists like these will be the next generation - I hope so, anyway!

So many old people against uni because they generalise and think everyone is like caucausians and go there to get drunk and party
Well alot of people with strict religions dont, alot of people go to change there lives and get better careers
While woodworking maybe very romantic and ofcourse validating its not exactly a viable career, not for everyone atleast, even most of the guys in this video are volunteers
At the end of the day people gotta eat and survive, its sad but thats what world these rich people set us upon, unless your willing to sacrifice everything and go self sustaining you cant do anything

WOW, I'm just blown away by what is happening here, such experience and complete perfection! Right down to the simplest of layouts, it's so obvious that generations of sailing experience, boat-building, and an insane level of craftsmanship are all being bestowed upon this project!
And, of course Leo's own project management prowess, professionalism, boat building skills and will to succeed are the seeds of zeal for us all to appreciate this journey.

It was my grandfather and uncles that salvaged the Tally ho in Rarotonga. My uncle was telling me the story just the other day of how they had to refloat it and tow it to shore.

@@realrayra They know about the rebuild. That's where some of the old photos came from, my family.
My wife and I , 73 and 77, are currently "cleaning out the garage", and it is a sad and somewhat tearful experience. Back in 1990 we were working towards doing The Big C -- out the Golden Gate and turn left, then "run til the butter melts" ... and we won't be home for dinner. But "life happened" and we are now too old and too infirm to do that. So we are packing up and giving away all of the bits and pieces that were part of that dream -- foulies and watch jackets, SOSpenders, our nav books and ephermises (but not the sextant!), etc., etc., etc. It is a truly painful process.
I know Leo started doing this for himself, but in the process he has given an invaluable gift to those us who also had the dream, but not the skills or the time. We dreamed, he does, and we thank him *so* much for sharing his journey with us all. God Bless Tally Ho! and all who will sail on her.
The shipwrights just keep getting better, and it’s great having Zeal back on the crew. Another amazing video, and I will watch it twice, or perhaps thrice!
The good thing about being my age Michael, is that I forget so quickly so I can start the whole series again & it will all be new again to me!!

Working in Construction, I hear the phrase "We ain't building Pianos.....", Yet here, Leo and the Team are Building to a standard that would make Tally Ho the Grandest of all Pianos - Steinway would be proud to produce such a boat. So this whole series gives me the Ying and Yang of sadness at the standard of the majority of mass produced everything in our commercialised society and the soaring Joy and Delight that craftsmanship and attention bring, when things are done right. Thank You.

I’m currently building a small dinghy that I’ve painted with her colors (or at least my nearest match thereof). As always, I’m enjoying the incredible journey you are taking us on. I like your nickname Steve. I used to be on a cargo ship that used to go to Sapele in West Africa to collect all that beautiful wood. That was in the very early 60s, it was a totally different time to these!
Being a video editor myself, and seeing how Leo edits is breathtaking to me. The fact that you have such success from the videos I believe is that you keep the feel of the videos the same. I feel like I'm watching a home video but it is still well put together. You keep the video well organized to a professional degree but I still get to enjoy the personal time with all of the guys working on the project. That is no small feat, even for someone focusing all of their time on the video editing. But you are also managing this massive project. That is what keeps me watching every week. From a professional stand point you are extremely talented sir :D

I've een following this project since I began studying architecture in 2017, I've learnt so much about carpentry and building in wood watching your video's. The architecture degree is still about 2 years away though :-)
Things are suddenly moving rather fast, it’s starting to take shape both inside and out 🎉🎉💪
One of the enjoyable parts to boat building is how one's perspective changes during construction. At times, the project seems enormous; huge and almost unbelievably complex. Then, when one phase of construction ends, it will appear to have gotten smaller, more defined and manageable. The creation and hanging of the frames made this boat look gigantic. Now, with the hull complete and deck hardware going on, its much smaller, more personal, compact and simple appearing.
It will grow again with mast and rigging going in. Lastly, when launched, and she's in the water, she will attain her full dimension again.
Im sure out on the water, with a decent blow, Talley Ho will seem small at times.

Magically, you've created funding for the project , Skillfully you've designed amazing high standards for the project. You've attracted a crew of skilled and inspired really wonderful people who've donated their talents to the project. Me, I haven't the resources to have contributed. I'm a sideliner, just wishing you the best, and in admiration of your abilities, how they might be harnessed.
As a carpenter (of homes and millworks) it's always fun to peep the unsung heros of this entire project--- THE TOOLS!
So many fun and interesting shop tools and power and hand tools floating around, and all the specialized boatbuilding tools.
I have a lot of old carpentry shop tools in my home shop that are from the 60s that I resurrected like a Powermatic 68 and 86
Seeing all that old stuff like that monster of a planer still being used still is cool, I miss that old bandsaw from the backyard days

Very much enjoyed the video! I was in Port Townsend about 20 years ago and Pat Mahon was my instructor. Great to see him working again. I would drool over the schooner Martha back then and still do now, so great to see those shots of her. Looking forward to the rest of the project.
Premium workmanship
Again, One cannot speak more admirable when it comes to the top level shipwright and cabinetmakers skills of all of these craftsman. The word “Bespoke” for everything done with Tally Ho is also almost an understatement and these talented craftsman are pretty much French Fitting the components of each piece as she goes together as were done with only the finest of 18th century dueling pistol cases, I’m just in awe of the care and pride everyone has taken to bring Tally Ho back to life ! All I can possibly add to the above is…. That day Leo walked into that still proud but extremely down on her luck famous ship named Tally Ho , somehow the sea’s parted and the sky’s turned blue
that day, because so few individuals had the love, the passion, vision and commitment to take this kind of project on. Thank you Leo and to all of your talented shipwrights for saving Tally Ho !
I enjoy learning about boats through your videos and that's what brings me back, but this week it struck me that you have really stepped up your videography and editing skills to professional quality. Wait, can we talk about those amazing drawers for a second? Love the simple lip that keeps them from opening! No drawer slides - I could see that being nice in a kitchen too, just lift and pull
