  • Momma turkey has hatched out a nice bunch of baby chickens for us, got 11 in total, there very strong and doing good, there much stronger than the ones we bought (which are the parents of theses guys) so hopefully we well have some strong healthy chickens to add to the laying flock.

    My dad used to use bantams to hatch out pheasant and partridge chicks. He preferred bantams as surrogate mothers as they were smaller and lighter, partridge chicks are not much bigger than bumble-bees when newly hatched 😊

      I have never had bantams but I have been told there are easy to go broody and they make very good moms.

    Cutesville here, 11 baby chicks!!!! She's definitely a good Momma Turkey, first I heard of people switching chicken or duck eggs to turkey hens was my maternal grandma, she also liked to put duck eggs under her hens, when the ducklings would walk past a pond on my gramps' farm, all the ducklings would enter the water and the mother hen was so frantic and worried about her babies drowning in the cold, murky water, nothing happened unless there was an ol' snapper turtle, then rest assured before the day was over all the ducklings would have been eatened by the snapper! Ahhh,...such cute balls of brown down!

    amazing - you can really tell that she's 'concerned' about the chicks and keeping them warm and safe - watching them closely and bending her head down to keep in contact with them. never seen a mama turkey before. thanks :}

    You probably won't read this or event see this but I want to point something out. I myself own chickens and ducks and other birds. I find it interesting how you keep them all together. I would recommend you to separate all by ducks and chickens and then turkeys and all by ages at least that's what I do

    • @lifeinthailand
      @lifeinthailand  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds racist.
      And I read and reply to every comment.
      There is no reason to separate the breeds, young one's yes for safety reasons.

    We have lots of baby chicks running around here currently, as well...including one freak chick born from a clutch of abandoned eggs. They will bond to the first creature they see as their mother (which for this little guy means me). So now this chick follows me around like I'm the mother.

    • @lifeinthailand

      It makes the barn look much bigger, there are pros and cons with this setup, be much harder to introduce young birds and harder to control who eats what food.

    Looked it up for you; your Gold-star mama turkey is about upper-middle-aged. In captivity, domestic turkeys can live up to a little shy of 10 years, so 4-5 is up there, but not ancient. She might still have 2, maybe even 3 more good years of mothering in her, with good care. :) Thank you for ending the video on baby chickie cuteness

    are they always living in enclosed area or you let them out? our free range coulpe call ducks, that are always outside that gets meals in the evenings have wet feathers and are dirty compare to yours which are clean but closed. Now bare in mind that we in ireland where rains a lot, but we have a shelter for them to hide and roost, but we have only two, maybe they need a company, which we are planning on... what your ideas on that? thank you if you reply :)

      I always have a few birds free range but I have very little space so I bring the birds fresh greens every day, just doing the best I can for them, there healthy and happy, most of all safe.

    The average lifespan of a wild turkey is 3-5 years, and the oldest known wild turkey lived to be at least 13 years old.

      Interesting, this old girl is looking her age now, in the wild she would probably not survive anymore.

    Really, do people really say stuff like that? wow. In the wild, animals do the same thing. In the USA we have a bird called a Cow Bird and she is a very lazy sorry mom. She proves it by the way she gets her babies hatched. She finds an Eastern Bluebird nesting in a house and throws the bluebirds eggs out and lays hers and the bluebird hatches and raises them. Also, as you know sometimes when a monkey loses her baby she will grab a cat/kitten to replace it. Stuff happens like that all the time. Some moms are just better than others. The place looks much better so much poop moved in a short time. Take it easy in that heat.

    that hen turkey is extremely calm, excellent mother material, that rat burrow I would start by collapsing the tunnels with a spade to kill any young they might have started having and it will also show you where they are lying up when they dig themselves back out!

      stinking polecat I've seen people stick a hose in one of the holes and have a guy with a shovel at each of the other holes. Turn the water on and flood it, then whack the rats as the run out of the other holes.

    • @lifeinthailand
      @lifeinthailand  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have done that, did not find the nest, I was more interested in if they were still there, it took a feel days before they made any new holes.

    I've read several times that its not a good idea to have turkeys raised in the same spot as chickens and ducks because the turkeys can catch this illness or skin problems that can harm them via interaction. Have you ever had that issue?

    • @lifeinthailand
      @lifeinthailand  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @lifeinthailand

      They will probably raise them as 1 big family, I have had that happen a few times, even with the babies being a week apart, the 2 mom's will work together.
