    People forget how important was occitan language in the Middle Age: it was the language of the trouvadours, of the poetry and art.

      In fact, Catalan found itself in a similar position as the italian "dialects" today, it was despised and only used in the homes and streets. It wasn't until the 13th century that it started being used in the court of Barcelona, and adopted a significant role. The first written text (les homilies d'Organyà) and a historical idol, Ramon Llull, one of the first to write in Catalan, were also from that times. During the 14th century, with the conquests of Jaume I el Conqueridor, started the first catalan colonies around the Mediterranean, most notably the ones in Occitaine, Valencia, Murcia and Sardinia. It wasn't utill the 15th century that the Bible was first translated to catalan, and the "catalan golden century" started, which would leave a huge footprint in catalan culture, values and obviously, literature.

    As a native Spanish speaker currently learning French, I found easier to understand Catalan and Occitan at first glance than French when I was a beginner.
    This video isn't my first contact with these two magnificent languages, though. I find their similarity very interesting; I correlate it with other cases such as Portuguese and Galician or even Castilian (more commonly known as Spanish) and Asturleonese. Due to the dialect continuum, these two languages seem to be twins, just like other brilliant comment in this video remarked. Sadly Occitan is being replaced with French, but hey, at least it has a co-official status in my country, more precisely in the Aran Valley; where Aranese, a dialect of Gascon Occitan, is spoken and taught.

      Yeah, unfortunately Occitan is being replaced by French little by little... The only place where Occitan has recognition is in Spain; more precisely in Val d'Aran, a region in the province of Lleida where Aranese, a dialect of Gascon Occitan, has a co-official status alongside with Catalan and Spanish. Aranese people are taught Occitan at school, unlike in France.

      Catalan, Occitan, French, Romand and Gallo-Italian languages are all Gallo-Roman, at one point they were a single language, so in a sense, yes, catalan and occitan are very close to old french.

      @MGdelOeste 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@alejandror.planas9802 Are we really sure of this? Language classifications have always been influenced by geography and even politics more than anything. I can see how iberoromance languages could have been all the same language once as they formed in a relatively little region (the Cantabrian range) and then spread southwards, but French, Occitan, Catalan, Galloitalian, old Galia and Northern Italy was a vast region with lots of different influences.

      Perdida de D despues de N: catalan: depèn, món, correspon Occitano depend, mond, correspond, Castellano: depende, mundo, corresponde
      Palabras acabadas en -an: Catalan: se reduce en -a (Pagà, Capità) Occitano: siempre acaba en -an (Pagan, Capitan), Catellano: a veces añade vocal al final (Pagano, Capitán)
      Pocas o ninguna diferencia hay donde el catalan se asemeje más al castellano, si acaso en la vocalización de 3 a/i/u y poco mas

      @@unanec en realitat té sentit, no tant per la influència del castellà o del francés en les respectives llengües sinó per la separació geogràfica de ambdues a partir de la dita independència dels territoris de la marca hispànica. Si ho pensem, als escrits antics els texts eren tan pareguts com podrien ser-ho els actuals dialectes del català (sense tenir compte de la normalització lingüística a l'escrit esclar). Tindria sentit que el català i l'occità acabaren desenvolupant aquestes diferències abans i tot que estes foren influenciades per les respectives llengües nacionals que es van estendre a cada costat dels Pirineus

      Well "a mix" isn't correct. Catalan is a gallo-romance language, indisputably, so it's more accurately a sibling language to French, and very similar to old french. Castillian is an ibero-romance language, so a cousin language to both Catalan and French. Aragonese would be more of "a mix" as people don't know if its ibero-romance or occitano-romance (gallo-romance)..
