  • SaGa is the longest-running Final Fantasy spinoff influenced by Final Fantasy II, a game many consider to be one of the worst if not the worst Final Fantasy flagship title. This video is a look at Akitoshi Kawazu's SaGa series games in Japan and in the west in the past, present, and future.

Have you played a game in the SaGa series, and if so which is your favorite?

Romancing saga minstrel song is for me the "magnum opus" of the series. I played it A LOT on the PS2

Torn between RS1 for Super Famicom, RS3, and SaGa Frontier 1. I like Minstrel Song, but prefer the look, music, and gameplay of the original. If it had been modernized better, or without changing so much, it would be my favorite.

Either the very very first one on GameBoy, SaGa Frontier, or Emerald Beyond.

Great video, but I must point out a couple corrections: Romancing SaGa 2 (the remaster came out in 2016, not 2015)was the actual first game in the series to feature "glimmering" or sparking techs mid battle, not Romancing SaGa 3, and Minstrel Song came out in 2005 not 2002. Also, there were far more that just four Provinces in Scarlet Grace.

Saga is a criminally underrated series but it certainly isn’t for everyone.
I think Romancing Saga 3 is my favourite, but Frontier 1, RS2, Scarlet Grace and Minstrel Song are all top tier IMO. I have a soft spot for the GB games but they’re pretty rough around the edges. The fan translated ds games are cute though.

Unlimited SaGa is the true test of Kawazu fans.
If you truly love esoteric systems, there's none more loveable than it.

I can't really say what's my favourite game, since it's a series where I bought multiple titles but I haven't played them that much.
I know I'll enjoy them... but I also know that it can be a huge time investment, especially since these games are so complex.
That being said, I've played (or tested) all titles, except the mobile games, "RS 2", "Unlimited Saga" and "Frontier 2".
The GB titles are super interesting and I just love playing "outdated" games, since they aren't as overwhelming... most of the time.
I still have to get "Romancing SaGa 2" since I find it super interesting with how the game progresses.
And yeah, I also like "Final Fantasy 2" since I simply enjoy how char growth works in these games.
Even if the mechanic is kinda flawed, I prefer it over standard level-ups.
There are mostly 2 things that kinda keep me away from starting a whole run in some titles:
    1. The equipment and money problems.
I really love what I've played in "RS 3" so far... but my god, outfitting everyone can be a hassle, especially since you can visit many towns right from the get-go.
Which means, go to every town, visit every chop and make a screenshot or write down every single item with its prices and where the shop is located.
    2. The difficulty... or better, the way to increase it.
I know, people make too much drama around the system and it isn't supposed to be that bad.
But avoiding fights in order to keep the game at a reasonable level is... not good.
Especially in "Minstrel Song", where fights progress the time.
It's supposed to prevent grinding, but it always leaves a bit taste in my mouth, since "fighting too much" should never be a thing I'm worried about in a game.
That being said, still a great series.
The char progression and just how open these games are overshine the bad things.

Yeah, many of the SaGa games definitely aren't easy pick up and play games. The difficulty scaling in many of the SaGa games is definitely a good and very relevant point I altogether forgot to mention in this entire video.

the second problem you mentioned is only relevant in Minstrel Song. It has the most unforgiving battle rank escalation bc it it's tied to the Event Rank. It is not as bad in other games in the series. In RS3, for an instance, you only increase battle rank for the particular type of enemy sprite you engage on the field, and in Scarlet Grace it eventually stops increasing at all. As for money and items, that's what new game + is for., though the specifics of it vary from game to game.
SaGa is challenging, yes, but it's definetely not as hard as some people make it out to be.
