The RLM gangsters hardly ever comment on the score. But Jay did mention the score during his review of The Neon Demon. So Cliff Martinez finally got a bit of acknowledgement. Rightfully so.
What a topical episode! September 2021 marks the 10th anniversary of Drive! The opening 10 minutes is in my opinion the best scene I've ever watched in a movie. I say that with zero hyperbole. I love it that much
This Half In The Bag is so interesting. A movie that is pretty much universally beloved and considered a modern classic of the 2010's. The other is a movie that gained way more relevance after Covid 19, and how true to life it was. Inception ontop of Inception
Drive is in my top 5 with Empire and others. I loved how they put the driving character idea on its head and was so emotional and true to life. The elevator scene and the end are 2 of the greatest violent scenes in history in my opinion. And Bryan Cranston, Ron Pearlman, Oscar Isaac, the love interest, and the main boss were Awesome and Gossling was Amazing
The elevator scene is not about violence though, it's about the fast transition from a romantic kiss to a deadly headstump and how that can turn ones perception of another person in a second. Driver basically loses everything at that point. That transition is pure poetry like never seen before on film.

ttv0 Still doesn't compare if you ask me. Your choice of scene more compares to let's say American History X, where something happens that the character isn't in control of himself. We've seen that numerous times. Besides that wasn't even the original intended ending for American Beauty, but a more digestible ending than the intended. My point however still being that it's not a characters choice to go from one extreme to the other as it is in Drive and it isn't an execution on one opposite to another. And did you actually feel happiness for Lester before he got shot? He wasn't exactly a person you should feel happy for if you ask me, but you write that the audience feel happiness before his sudden death.

Spot on about Drive. I thought I was getting into a Paul Walker movie. I don't know why I watched it, having thought that would be what it was like, but I'm glad I did.
It feels like a nice painting. It has a cool style, composition is great, and the sound gives it texture. But like a painting, you can pretty much see everything just by looking at it and you can’t get much depth. You know the bare minimum about the characters and their aspirations. In place of dialogue you get short quips that imply a double meaning. “That’s the bad guy!” “How do you know?” “I don’t know” Wow isn’t that cool how it mirrors the ambiguity of the main characters moral alignment? “Hands dirty” “That’s okay, mine is too” Wow they are talking about how they both participate in crime! It’s a nice addition to dialogue as a nod to those paying attention. When it’s the only dialogue you hear then it’s like beating you in the head over it.
I found this video by sorting through RLMs videos by popular and going from bottom-up until finding the first full Half In The Bag movie review. I wondered why, and when i played it, Jay calls me an asshole immediately 😂
My only problem with drive is him holding the bullet to the guys head. If he hit that with the hammer it would blow up like a firecracker and destroy his hand. Replace it with a nail and it's perfect.
I'm a biology student so a movie that takes immunology seriously is just 😍 i loved contagion and i love the knick for that reason. I can't understand anyone not being fascinated haha
I enjoyed it. I really loved the whole style of the movie, the cinematography, and the music, but it is definitely a bit pretentious and lacking in the story/character department. It relies a lot on shock value too. I''d still recommend though, just because I found it really unique and memorable.
Eh, I feel like that song would be a bit on the nose. I liked it as it was, but its style over substance and it's pretentious. Calling it a horror movie is pretty ridiculous though.
The way mike reacted to jay saying he's a necrophiliac is how I want to be. I want to just coyly smile to myself instead of piping up to explain how funny it was what someone just said.
In a way it seems a bit too tame in parts.They underplayed quite a bit the incompetence aspect of the guys in charge.They also underplayed the tensions resulting from it.Countries don't threaten each other or go to war the WHO is doing its job.Its in a way tame.Then again this movie was made in 2010 when issues like political polarisation racial tensions and a president who gets in shouting matches were not on the agenda.

In case you really care about feedback from a year later, I kind of like the "one, then the other after a commercial break" style of review. Sometimes there's a movie I don't care about on this show paired with something that I've seen or was interested in, and being able to skip to the half that I like is... Well, I like that.
Its a strange sort of duality where they criticise films for treating their audiences as if they are dumb and yet they call audiences dumb on a regular basis.
I've been telling people to watch Contagion for years and now, after all this time, one little pandemic causes TH-cam to recommend this review to me... Even though I've watched it before.
