Berry Oakley was one of the
greatest bassists who ever lived. He was 23 years old when this was recorded. Sadly, he was killed in a motorcycle accident on November 11, 1972, 3 blocks from where Duane was killed a little more than a year earlier. I was fortunate enough to have seen Berry’s last performance which was at my college 9 days before he was killed. As a fellow bassist, he was one of my heroes. I still practice to At Fillmore East everyday as a tribute to him.

  • @johnlynch9032
    @johnlynch9032 ปีที่แล้ว +16

There are two guitarists, two drummers, a bass player and an organist/vocals. Every song you hear is played differently every time. They all have a structure with two or three note signals indicating where the soloist wants to go. They’ve jammed so much that they can go any direction in a given song that they want. That’s why they’re so darn good. Only a handful of groups have two drummers because if they don’t know each other’s style it can be a real train wreck. These guys were phenomenal with the dynamics raising and lowering. Bringing it to a peak and letting it down so gently. Just the best IMHO. They created a genre of music that’s stands the test of time. I suggest that before listening and commenting on a group, you should take a minute to check out who’s who in the group. It will help your reactions.

I lived and breathed this album in the rural Deep South when it came out and I followed the band wherever I could afford to go and their music and especially this album comprise the soundtrack of my youth. This music and the Deep South, the good parts of the Deep South, are inseparable. They are one and the same. I’m so happy to see you not just hearing, but feeling the music.

Whipping Post refers to the post a slave who had displeased his master would be tied to while he was whipped for his transgressions. So the lyrics convey that his love-gone-wrong is punishing him like he is being tied to the whipping post.

The Allman Brothers Band was one of the few bands to feature two drummers. Duane Allman wanted it that way from the start. When asked why by Jaimoe, one of the drummers, he said it was because James Brown has two drummers.

My favorite album and Elizabeth Reed is my all time favorite song. Dual lead guitars, two drummers add Berry on bass and Gregg was created to sign the blues, perfection. When this came out concerts were savored experiences and gave the musicians a chance to step out and jam. Solos were mostly improvisation so there was not much memorization of notes. You could go to 50 shows and hear 50 different variations. These guys were amazing. Enjoy!

Two drummers - Jaimo and Butch, two lead guitars =Duane a slide, Dickie-a lead, Gregg -vocalist/B3 Hammond organ, Berry on Bass. Their known for how they played so "tight", not sloppy mixes. And LONG jams of songs. All were masters of their instrument. ALL were in their early 20's. wow They started Southern rock, a blend of rock, blues, jazz, country and soul. Hard to do, but they did it.➡➡ At 32: 00 the base and drums are "bubbling" underneath, it's a blues term called "cooking" or cookin' and describes it perfectly. TY Verdy, I subscribed !

Brings back fond memories. I believe I had the pleasure of growing up listening to some of the best musicians/songwriters ever. Zepplin, Allman Bros., Pink Floyd, Rush, The Outlaws, Molly Hatchet…… and so many more from the 60s, 70s and 80s, all some of the best “jam bands”/musicians/composers and all in my music collection. Thank you for listening to this, it had been about 10 years since my last listen to the Allmans. The joy on your face as you listened was priceless and made this old hippie so happy. Keep on exploring the 70s music scene, it is one of the best decades for music ever. 😊❤🎉

It does my heart proud to see a young person get this music. I was 12 and my life was forever changed when I bought this album and brought it home, put it on the turntable and put the needle down. I was utterly devastated by the virtuosity and wore out I don't know how many copies of it. I went on to play guitar and play a good portion of this album. It is, along with Yessongs (which you should give a listen to as well), the capture of an almost perfectly inspired event. It quite literally makes me cry every time I listen to it because it is so pure and deeply printed in the center of my being. A monumental musical event. I wish we had more young people like you; music just might experience a rennaisance if we did.

The unique guitar sound by Dickey Betts on Elizabeth Reed *that you described as sounding like a sax) is made by rotating the volume/tone dial for the upper guitar pick-up with the pinky finger of right hand (the strumming hand), while at the same time strumming or picking. Walter Trout is a master at that technique and Joe Bonamasa does it on occasion.

I'm not going to claim that artists 50 years ago were more talented than today, but rather, for a period of about 10 years, (let's say 1966 to 1975) record companies allowed them to record music that showed off their virtuosity. After that, they decided that to cash in they needed everyone to play particular ways to fit a niche and appeal to the biggest audience who wanted that niche.
Also, what I notice young reactors responding to a lot are the blues elements in rock of that period. Those musicians grew up listening to and playing with an amazing generation of blues artists. They took that feeling and made rock music with it. I think the blues is mostly gone from popular music these days.

Loved your reaction Verdy. It was late 1969 and I was attending Univ. of Calif. Riverside. I was leaving campus to go to lunch with a friend when we heard this amazing sound coming from the quad. We ran over only to find this band of young musicians, the Allman Bros. What we heard from a distance was Duane's slide guitar, which neither of us had ever heard before. And Gregg's vocals were so soulful and passionate. I've been an ABB fan ever since - they're certainly in my 5 top bands of all-time.

I won't jump into the subjective debate of "best" live album ever, but for me - this is the most satisfying live album in my collection. The performances are flawless, and the sound of the "room" capture them perfectly. To be honest, I've never heard a Fillmore or Winterland recording that didn't sound amazing! It seems like Bill Graham had great recording equipment and talented house engineers that really knew how to use it. I have a latter re-issue of this called "The Fillmore Concerts", with nearly double the material, but I think the mix of the original is better. I can't hear the rumble of Berry Oakley's bass nearly as well on my version. Hardly anyone talks about it, but I think the Allman Brothers at the Atlanta Pop Festival is also excellent!

  • @izzonj

Verdy, it's so fun to watch your face during killer guitar playing! I'm old enough that the first rock concert i ever went to was The Allman Brothers, unfortunately, I'm not old enough to have seen them before the tragic deaths of Duanne Allman (lead/ slide guitar) and Berry Oakley (bass) who are featured on this album. Both died in motorcycle accidents, a year apart, in nearly the same location.
Still, they were amazing! They were known for extended jams in their concerts as some of these recordings demonstrate. I recall one that went on for 45 min, with a 20 min drum duet with about 5 min of solo timpani, lol (I know because I was keeping and eye on my watch because my dad was picking us up at a prearranged time. Sorry to keep you waiting so long, dad!)
Always an unusual lineup, originally with two lead guitars and two drummers and no straight rhythm guitarist - rhythm role was carried by one of the leads or on keyboards. Later, they had a organist AND pianist, which gave them a distinctive sound. And always the blusiest vocals by Duanne's younger brother Gregg (who was married to Cher for a while!). Great, great band! It bums me out that some people think of Lynard Skynyrd as the epitome of "southern rock".

The Allman Brothers Band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1969[3] by brothers Duane Allman (founder, slide guitar and lead guitar) and Gregg Allman (vocals, keyboards, songwriting), as well as Dickey Betts (lead guitar, vocals, songwriting), Berry Oakley (bass), Butch Trucks (drums), and Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson (drums). Sadly Duane Allman, Greg Allman, Berry Oakley, and Butch Trucks are all dead. Duane and Berry died early in the band's history.

One of the more common things among creative people is that we often do our best work when we are still young and excited about it, and in the case of musicians, have the manual dexterity and timing they need to put it all together. I'm a photographer and a writer. Much of my best work was done in my teens and twenties when I was in school and had my first real job. I know lots of people who busted their butts to learn, grow, and DO when they were young. Once you find your path, you become obsessed with chasing your dream. SO many musicians of the '60s, '70s, and '80s were successful early in life. The most lucky, sane, careful, and creative among them are still active.

Duane Allman was a studio musician at Rick Hall's studio in Muscle Shoales Alabama. Some of his work is found on records by Wilson Pickett, Boz Scaggs, Aretha Franklin, Laura Nero, Herbie Mann, King Curtis among many other artists where he was not credited as he was always on the road. After Eric Clapton left Delaney, Bonnie and Friends Duane joined the group as slide guitar player. See Duane Allman Anthology 1&2.
By happinstance, the Allmans were playing in Miami while Eric Clapton was recording Layla and assorted love song. Eric invited the Allmans back to the studio to Jam. As a result Duane played on 10 of the songs on the double album, including Layla. He came up with the "opening riff" for the Layla song. He was later asked by Eric to join Derek & The Domino's the group that recorded the Layla Album, but Duane declined. He did however play live with Eric & the Dominos at two concerts
The Allman Brothers at the time of the Fillmore Album consisted of Duane (Lead and slide guitar), Gregg Allman (Vocals, organ &Piano and later guitar) Berry Oakley-Bass (guitarist turned to playing Bass Note he played bass as almost a third guitar, Butch Trucks-Drums, Jaimoe-Drums.
Liz reed's name came from a headstone in the Macon, GA Cemetary-The same cemetary where many of the band members are buried. Dickie wrote the tune. Th song begins with Dickie playing "Volume Swells". This technique requires striking the note on the fret board while simultaneously using the guitarist's strumming hand pinky to wrap around the guitar's volume knob, moving the volume up and down thus creating a haunting sound. Tricky!
After the harmonic intro, Dickie plays the first guitar solo, this is followed Gregg's jazz like organ solo. Finally, Duane plays the second guitar solo which includes triplets, palm muting, and some Bossa Nova phrases.
Note: Ever time the band played Liz Read (except in the structured intro and outro portions of the song) the lead guitar portions of the song are Improvised, not memorized. There has never been another band with such a high level of muscianship.

Hey Verdy Channel 🎶 right after whipping post which was over 23 minutes long they started going into the mountain jam without stopping. That song is over 35 minutes long FYI, I’ve been listening to this album since it came out. I had on eight track tape cartridge so I could hear it in my car, I still listen to it weekly over 50 years later. It’s one of the greatest albums of all time. 💯❤️😘 ☮️

Bright Angel, you'd love DEREK AND THE DOMINOS 'LAYLA AND OTHER ASSORTED LOVE SONGS'. It has Eric Clapton and Duane Allman playing guitar about longing for love. One of the greatest Rock/Blues (guitar) albums ever made. The Song "Have You Ever Love A Woman' brings me to tears every time. Also "Bell Bottom Blues", "Layla", and "Little Wing" are all great songs you'd cherish.

The short few notes at the end of Whipping Post is the beginning of a song titled Mountain Jam which was cut off of this concerts playing and added to the Eat a Peach album; another long instrumental that might interest you. Also, get the live video of One Way Out that starts out with Dickey Betts doing the lead in and Dwayne Allman coming in with the slide guitar work.

Duane Allman + Dickey Betts. Greatest guitar tandem ever. And its really not that close IMO. There leads are the stuff of pure genius. And there rhythm playing is as good as it gets. How the 2 of them could be in each others heads like they were is simply amazing. Of course you could say that about the rest of the members of this 1 of a kind band. Everyone was on the same page.

Dickie and Duane were awesome. Sad Duane passed so soon. I have to say Dickie and Warren Haynes are pretty good together. I love having good headphones, I hear so much more. I used to only hear the guitar. But now I catch the bass, the drummers and Gregg's subtle keyboards.

It is a joy to watch a young person falling for this iconic band on first listening. I am 72 years old and listening to them still is an ecstatic experience for me. I was in my early 20s when they came on the scene and blew everyone away. This live album is considered one of the finest albums ever; you made a good choice for your first listening! I won't spoil anything for you, but you should read about them, watch their live performances on youtube and listen to their albums. A long, tragic but beautiful history.

Far left is drummer Jai Johanny Johnson; Far right is drummer Butch Trucks; Second from the left is guitarist Duane Allman (he plays the slide guitar); Second from the right sitting up front is guitarist Dickey Betts (he's the one who blends jazz and country in his playing; Standing behind Dickey is Bassist Berry Oakley; Standing in the center is singer, pianist and organist Gregg Allman.

Elizabeth Reed is from a grave monument in rose hill cemetery in Macon Georgia..Duane's only credited song is little Martha...also a grave monument in rose hill..lil Martha is a life size sculpture for an 11 year old girl.. little Martha the song is considered one of the greatest rock acoustic songs ever and it probably is.btw the quiet parts live are all Duane creating and atmosphere..if you watch the very few live recordings of Duane the whole band is watching for Duane's quiet moments....true dynamic genuis live...Duane also played with Eric Clapton... Layla is mostly Duane's dynamics he also played with Delaney and Bonnie bramplett....incredible live musicians

So Whipping Post wasn't the end of the album, they released a subsequent album, "Eat A Peach" That was a mix of Studio work, and some live material. 2 Sides of the original vinyl has a 33 minutes. You can hear the first few notes at the end of Whipping Post, so they esthetically played for almost an hour.
Here is a link to that, there is a solo from the 2 drummers as well as a very tasty bass solo by Berry Oakley.

I saw the Allman Brothers, The Chambers Brothers and Little Richard at the Philadelphia Spectrum in the early seventies. Little Richard was supposed to open the show but was late. The Chambers Brothers played their set and when the Allman Brothers were in the middle of Elizabeth Reed, an outraged Little Richard burst onto the stage, interrupted the song complaining that the venue should have held the start until he arrived. He was roundly booed off the stage.
