Brazilians don't speak English because unlike Europe, here we have a continental area where all people speak the same language. Plus, most of Brazilians live far away from the border with other countries, and all of those countries speak Spanish. So, general people really don't have to speak English in Brazil.
t perfil nope! We don't speak English because our schools hardly teach us our own language.....how could we get any decent English outta these schools?since English is the universal language .....all countries should teach basics at schools, but like I said..... students here graduate with hardly any decent portuguese.

I just got back from 10 days in Rio, Fortaleza, and Jericoacoara. It's a fantastic place. We only met one couple from France. Everyone else was from Brazil. There were lots of people on vacation, but all were from Brazil. I think that's why so few people speak any language other than Portuguese.

@@edineiasantana4563 I didn't mean it as a complaint. I think Brazil is more like an undiscovered paradise. It just seemed to me that there were few people from other countries, (my impression, maybe not reality) so no need to know English. People from the United States are famous for not knowing other languages, because we don't travel much outside our country, and can't practice what we learn in high school.
A friend of mine who was in Russia in the old Soviet days, called a large hotel and asked the telephonist if he could leave a message in English. Her response was; "If you want to leave a message in English, why don't you call a hotel in London? "
Not really. There are parks, historical landmarks, museums, shopping malls, architecture, clubs, events (both business and/or pleasure). Millions of visitors annually.
I live in São Paulo and I think that people say Brazil is dangerous if you live here, like you have to take care of yourself and your things, but if you're gonna stay only a few days, you don't feel that it's how people say it is. Anyway, hope you guys come back some time! Loved the video
The problem isn't only the violence it's what the justice do about that. Detroit and Los Angeles could be worse than SP I don't know, but certainly if someone try to do bad things on that places probably they will get years and years in the jail and here in Brazil it's the opposite!
So happy to see you two went to Brazil! Many people are scared to travel to Brazil because they hear it is unsafe, but I found that to be the opposite. As long as you are conscious of your surroundings and stay in busy areas, you will likely be fine. If you plan to leave Sao Paulo, you should head north and explore Bahia! I spent two weeks in Salvador this past year and loved the vibe, culture, and food. Have fun!

I am from Curitiba. I will say if they come to Curitiba they will get a similar exprience that they got in São Paulo. Curitiba is not bad but is not a tourist city. You can see all the major sites in Curitiba in a day Getting the green tourist line. I also think the language barrier will be worst in Curitiba than in São Paulo because Curitiba is a working city with less multi national and much more smaller than SP. If I was a tourest I would go to Morretes and Ilha do Mel and then go to Foz do Iguaçú or Santa Catarina's beaches. The most touresty área outside of Brazil outside of Rio is the Northeast. But the Northeast have major problems that curitiba does not have is the level of crime is very high. The Northeast have geat potencial to even be richer than the south, they good soil for agriculture because the region is dry, they are the closet point to Europe an ideal place to open industries to export. They have population even though is most are low skilled. But corrupt political oligarch sucks all the money from south maintaining most of the population in poverty. And they are also a tourtesty place. The Northeast should be the richest and most developed region but they are not because of corruption and the Indústria da seca or translating drout industry.
Nightlife in São Paulo is great! Go to the bars at Vila Madalena and enjoy the nice restaurants in Jardins. Back with a bang..of course :) Looking over that city it seems to go on into infinity, wow. As far as who wins the US-Brazil size war, America is slightly bigger, if you take into account Alaska and Hawaii. Just figuring the contiguous US, we're a little smaller.
Good Day Mates... Great Show... Good Job. I am a Paulista (from upstate São Paulo.) Lived in Buffalo, NY, Philadelphia, San Francisco and now Salt Lake. It is sad when people point out "how dangerous Brazil is... some with direct experience others just hearsay. I've been to 80 countries around the world including places like Bangkok and New Delhi. Over 50 times to Europe and 46 states in the USA. most of Canada. twice around the planet That said, let me tell you I was robbed only once at gunpoint, and that happened in Frankfurt, Germany. I've been to Brazil with American friends several times, and yes... my husband got robbed in Rio once.. Let's remember that in the USA, it is extremely dangerous (due to shooting sprees) at Night clubs, gay and straight, schools (over 20 shooting in 2018 only), churches, movie theathers, shopping malls even Christmas parties (San Bernadino) . if the media were to emphasize all this overseas, then of course the US would have the same reputation.. So thank you for not emphasizing "danger" too much. Here are two mistakes most Americans make about Brazil...#1. They assume we speak Spanish. Here in the USA when I tell them that we speak Portuguese not spanish... some even have the guts to TELL ME, that I am wrong, for they have been taught in school that in South America They speak SPANISH...DUH - end of story. Mistake # 2... some documentaries made by americans about Brazil, state that Brazilians are getting WESTERNIZED. What..?!??? As a Brazilian it never dawned on me that Brazil was EASTERNIZED before. In the USA when they talk about western countries they will even go as far as making Japan a western country before they will accept the fact that Brazil is a western country. What ????? in the world do they get that from? You did not make those two mistakes. Again Great JOB.
May I suggest you a few places that you guys should love visiting? There are plenty more beautiful things to do and see other than Rio. Hey guys!! Came across your channel last week and the very first video I watched was the one in Tallin...simply loved u2!! I do love Sao Paulo !! Iam Brazilian and I live in the very south in the capital of Rio Grande Do sul state, in Porto Alegre city... I am an English teacher and the fact u said about ppl not speaking English is indeed a true fact... polls indicate that less than 3 percent of the population here in Brazil speak English and this is due to the high cost of learning a second Language. There is an insane difference of education acquiring according to your social level here in Brazil. I have always taught English in Private English courses and here in Brazil we have a public education that is totally free from 5 years old till you finish high school but on the other hand this same education is so poorly delivered and the main goal of English and Spanish in this system is not making students bilingual but simply teaching grammar to pass in the entrance exam for the university ( if u are luck enough to get into uni) Congrats to your channel... u 2 are soooooo lovely! @@teacoffee42 I really dont know if this is true because here in Brazil public education is responsability either from the state or from the city government... being so , private companies cant and are not allowed to interfere not even to donate profit... but in relation to private english schools, the owners ,yes, they are indeed, very rich... I have always taught to Minds English School and the owners do have a lot of money..but we teachers are not so well paid...My last salary was about 1.900 Reais monthly for working 44 hours a week

Lived in Brasil for 2 years and São Paulo is definitely a working city (as described in the video), but also the most Americanized city in Brasil. That being said, for a more accurate representation of Brasil you need to get away from the big cities and have at least a basic understanding of Portuguese. I never felt insecure during my time in Brasil, but many who rely solely on English or have no experience with South America may be out of their comfort zone.

Cashiers are most likely asking if you want to put your Social Security Number in the invoice. It's something that happens in Sao Paulo state only, as far as I know. The state put this into law to fight tax evasion from businesses, and if you as a consumer register your SSN to the invoice, after a fiscal year has passed, you can deduce a certain amount from a yearly vehicle possession tax, or receive that deduction in cash. Since you don't have a CPF (our acronym for SSN), you don't have to worry. So if you hear a cashier say something like "Say-pay-F" (CPF), just say no, and proceed with payment.
Uber it's cheap for you who live in another country, here the minimun wage is R$954 that means about 243 USD so it's not cheap an 6 USD uber ride compared to the minimun wage of 1.500 USD in california (i guess)

You are so nice! I loved the way you described here. One of the brightside related to Sao Paulo is that even though it is a huge city, where 12 million people live and work, you can reach the sea in about a hour by car , and it's crazy because, there are wonderful beaches like 2h by car, like halfway to Rio, which is perfectly able to compare to Rio beaches. If you have the chance go to Ubatuba, it is a city is worthy, that has nearly 70 beaches as territory, so this is great as escaping mechanism from people that work really hard in a very busy city and go surfing on weekends.
Short answer: KIND OF... it depends where, which neighbourhood one is visiting. It is a good advice make an on line search about it before travel. In most cases it is safe but some safeguard is needed sometimes.

Hwaii no, just Alaska, and Alaska is empty and icy. so Brazl is bigger than USA.

Actually, Brazil is the largest contiguous country in the Americas. Canada is larger because of the islands, and US because of Alaska

Brazilians don't speak English because unlike Europe, here we have a continental area where all people speak the same language. Plus, most of Brazilians live far away from the border with other countries, and all of those countries speak Spanish. So, general people really don't have to speak English in Brazil.

I just got back from 10 days in Rio, Fortaleza, and Jericoacoara. It's a fantastic place. We only met one couple from France. Everyone else was from Brazil. There were lots of people on vacation, but all were from Brazil. I think that's why so few people speak any language other than Portuguese.
well, it is as big as America. A lot of Americans never leave the county either, or learn another language. Lots to see in America. I guess it's the same in BR.
Few people speak other languages here because education is a disaster.

Detroit and Los Angeles are worse than Sao Paulo
Well 1st of January is coming
The problem isn't only the violence it's what the justice do about that. Detroit and Los Angeles could be worse than SP I don't know, but certainly if someone try to do bad things on that places probably they will get years and years in the jail and here in Brazil it's the opposite!
@tyheem yes, I have been in Sao Paulo, Detroit and Los Angeles. Right now I live in Nevada.
São Paulo is safe. It has 10,9 homicides/100.000
Detroit has 80,3/100.000 it's more than Rio & São Paulo together.
So happy to see you two went to Brazil! Many people are scared to travel to Brazil because they hear it is unsafe, but I found that to be the opposite.

Hey! I'm Brazilian and this is the first video that i've watched from your channel, AND I LOVED IT. Hope u enjoyed Brazil, that is a little smaller than the U.S ( The U.S.A is the 4 th largest country in the world, and Brazil is the 5 th) sorry for my writing, sometime I make a mess whith the spelling, LOVED YOU GUYS
it's so good to hear tat you guys liked going to São Paulo, there are places in São Paulo where it's really dangerous, like 25 de março but most places are calm and not that dangerous! I think you guys could have maybe got to Liberdade, it sells all kind of things in there and i love to drink some boba there too!
Same in Brasilia!
Same in Maceio
Same in Rio Grande do Sul
Rio também, dependendo da loja
Uber it's cheap for you who live in another country, here the minimun wage is R$954 that means about 243 USD so it's not cheap an 6 USD uber ride compared to the minimun wage of 1.500 USD in california (i guess)
I also thought my traveler's Spanish would get me by in Portugal!! But as you say, the written is similar, but the spoken is totally different! (sounded almost Balkan to me...)
Brooke Yool brazilian portuguese is closer to spanish. European-african portuguese is hard.
@@pedrogallovieira7474 since when the true portuguese from Portugal is called "African Portuguese"? Here we call it PORTUGUÊS! Qual africano qual caralho
Since Angola, Mozambike, and other african countries started to speak this language.
@@pedrogallovieira7474 there is "African" countries that speaks French, do you call it African French to? No! That's a really ignorant comment
Red Cirkus sorry. I don’t anything about french. Just know that in América it”s a language spoken in Haiti, French Guiana and Canada. And that is far diferent front what is spoken in Europe.By the way, there is a brazilian portuguese and an european portuguese.
I'm from Brazil and you did very well on your first impressions.
Awesome video! Love brasil, went there last year and we are going there again in January! :) Nice channel, just started following you guys. Can't wait to see your other videos.
São Paulo is my city 😍🇧🇷
Sejam bem vindos!!! Aproveitem!
------------------------------------------------------
Be welcome!!! They are in the best place / country in the world! As much as the Brazilian himself speaks badly, here he gives 10 to 0 in many countries out there and we live happily, yes! I love this mix of the Brazilian people, and our cultures !!! Brazil is a true World Heritage !!! All country. And we are not only Carnival, Rio de Janeiro, Bahia and São Paulo. There are even "treasures" hidden in inner cities. Enjoy!
Beautiful city! Can't wait to visit. God bless
I live in são paulo. And i loved the way you guys talked about my city. Thank you
Brazil is bigger than the US if you take Alaska out of the It
Your experience reminds me when I visited Dallas in Texas from the UK. None of the taxi drivers i encountered spoke English. And I thought it was my British accent :)
Só eu fico ansioso em ver gringos filmantes e saltitantes nas ruas? Imagino se fosse aqui no Rio, é perigoso sim. Triste mas é a verdade. PS: I loved the name of this channel!
Hey guys. You guys got it pretty right. I'm from LA. And I live in São Paulo I live here around 35 years. So, you guys did a pretty good job. See ya.
Go to... Caldas Novas, Goiás City, Pirenópolis and Aruanã.
They all suck
Caldas Novas is awesome. A Hot Spring paradise.
Goiás ❤

hey guys, I am from São Paulo but indeed I enjoyed your video ! boa noite!
Short answer: KIND OF... it depends where, which neighbourhood one is visiting. It is a good advice make an on line search about it before travel. In most cases it is safe but some safeguard is needed sometimes.
