I definitely share your impressions. I had the same clichés about Brazil being just beaches, the Amazon and a couple of huge cities (Rio and Sao Paolo). But Brazil is much more than that! And Ouro Preto is a beautiful example. No doubt that Brazil will give you some more good surprises as it gave me during my 2 long trips there. Enjoy!

There are plenty other towns in Brazil that preserve the colonial architecture like Sao Luis, Olinda, Recife, Rio, yes Rio. If you look for you'll find it. Petropolis, which is outside of Rio in the mountains.Actually any state capital that touches the atlantic ocean has their historic site. Ah Salvador and its "pelourinho".
P.s.: that sabiá(bird) singing at the end was very soothing!!!

The arquitecture present in Ouro Preto is pure portuguese traditional arquitecture. If you visit Portugal you'll find those types of buildings all around, in small towns and city centers. It's said that Ouro Preto is the brazillian city who's better preserved the old portuguese arquitectural heritage in Brazil.

actually back on Brazil colony days , this beautiful city was called “Vila rica “.
at that time you cold find gold easily in this region .
some time after that they chanced the city’s name to Ouro Preto ( Black Gold ) cause of dark coloration that miners could see outside of the gold nuggets caused by some kind of a iron layer .
the city motto is “Proetiosum aurum nigrum “(precioso ouro negro )( precious black gold ).
    and yes it’s a beautiful place :)
