I was born and raised in Kosovo, I grew up and never spoken about religion. Even though had christians just across the river and always called them brothers as they were Albanians too. But at the age 27 in 2014 moved to Australia, that’s when i was asked about religion. I was confused and shocked as it was totally new topic to talk about. What’s religion? So true! In every religious holidays, we invite all our friends and family (who are always a mix of everything!) to join us and share meals, happiness and love. I have a Muslim heritage. When I was a student, every Orthodox Easter, my best friend and also my room mate, would wake me up at midnight and we had to get our candles, wear our best clothes and go to church. This is one of my best memories with my best friend - It solidified our relationship in a very interesting way. I understood more about her and her family, how they pray and their rituals during Easter. I still love going to an Orthodox church and be amazed by the love & solidarity but also the beauty of the churches. My friend has always been part of my family and not once, religion has been a topic of conversation for 26 years. My experience is not unique at all and 99% of Albanians share the same bond with fellow citizens. Having each religious celebration as a national holiday makes everyone at ease with the fact that every religion in genesis asks for the same rules to be respected - Peace, Love and Respect for each other!

Well I can tell you based on my family experience. I know one person who prays, in over 200 family from my dad and mothers side. Most they don't care about religion, but they respect it. It is more personal.... We do celebrate muslim holidays, by having a family lunch and visiting relatives. But we celebrate Christmas by having lots of parties :) We put christmas trees and decorate houses, like any western countries. Personally I say Im not atheist, but more "Im realist" :)

My parents and many relatives of mine and people I know have been happily married to partners from different religions. I am proud that my country and people do not treat each other based on what others believe (which is a thing between you and your God) but based on the actions and kindness. Albanians as a people are neither de facto nor de jure a 'Muslim' people bcs Albanians were originally Christian people who converted to Islam with the advance of Ottomans to the Balkans, mainly to avoid paying high tadex imposed by ottomans and to gain certain benefits, just like many centuried before that they converted to Christianity from Albanian paganism at the begining of Christian era. So, why aren't Albanians so crazy about two Abrahamian religions (Christianity and Islam)? The reason may lay in the actual role.that religion plays in human life. Religion gives people a sense of belonging and identitiy through communal rituals, speficic oral and written traditions etc... and Albanians already seem to have had plenty of that before the advent of Abrahamian religions (Christianity and later Islam) into their lands. They seem to have had plenty of Albanian traditions and slirtuality so they did not need to replace it with Abrahamian (Christian and later Islamic). They certainly adopted a lot of Christian and later Islamic traditions, but those never overwhelemed their Albanian traditions and Albaniam identity ...and this has nothing to do with communism bcs even those Albanians that never ever lived under communism (such as the Italian Albanians - Arbreshe, Greek Albanians-Arvanites, and the diaspora Albanians) identified themseves primarily as Albanians rather than adherents of this or that religion. Only those Albanians who were.not raised in Albanian traditions and never got to learn much about Albanian traditions, culture and history seem to identify more with religion than with Albanianess and they do not seem to be the majority, as far as I can see as an Albanian.

The main reason for Albanians generally being unreligious is because of Enver Hoxhas brutal stalinst communism which lasted for 50 years and so anyone that was caught praying or mentioning god , especially after 1967 was tortured or executed . Over 2000 religious buildings were either demolished or converted into cinemas and gymnasiums. Old manuscripts burnt to ashes. From my city ,Shkoder, all mosques were demolished apart from one as well as churches. Religious names were forcefully changed into communist atheist names that’s why you can see the difference in name changes from 1970s+ . For example pre 1970s Muslim names include : Xhemal, Enver,Muhamet,Hajrullah,Hasan, Esat , Mustafa ,etc for men and for Muslim women : Nexhmije, Hajrije,Fatime, Hatixhe, Xhemile ,Zejnepe ,etc .However post 1970s you’ve got men’s names like : Ilir, Agron, Arber, Arian, Gzim, Lulzim, Fitim, Beni, Bekim, etc . Whereas post 1970s women’s names include : Dhurate, Vera, Shpresa, Vjollca, Kuqja, Lirija . All in all my point is that faith and belief in religion was ripped out of Albanians under Enver Hoxha , that’s why you can see a clear difference between the older people who lived before communism took hold and the Young people. It’s also interesting because you can see the difference religiously between Albanians outside of Albania proper as they escaped a harsher punishment and pressure from Albanians communism instead of Yugoslavian communism...
I am Albanian Muslim and I can say Albanians in Albania are not practising Muslims they just are by birth and name dont know to pray dont know anything about Islam. Christianity is still more favourable than Islam and if you are practising Islam they say youre Turk or Arab because there are way more nationalistic and confuse being practising Muslim means you favour Arab & Turkish culture.
Albanian used to be practicing religious Muslims but under communists they were persecuted and was prohibited to practice so this generation and one before that. Now they are free slowly coming back to practicing.

I have Albanian and Kosovar friends many of them I go to there homes I know them very well. 10 years ago when i met them they hardly cared about Islam now there is huge difference...In Chicago they have there own big masjid every where else in USA you can see Albanian women in hijab and men going to masjid. Maybe it is different in where you live I don't know about that.

Albania is not a muslim country. It's a misconseption, misunderstanding and perpusly from the neibers and extremist, trying to give a bad, untrue reputation about our country and people. We are and we have to say that the albanians are not a muslim Nation. First of all, the Albanians have two major religion, muslim (60 percent) and kristians (40 percent). Even statistically, we are not. Secondly, and the most important, is that the Albanians have never been deeply fanatics of religion. This separate us from many other cultures. The other, very significant value of the Albanians, is that, different from other nations and cultures, we never have in our history clashes among religions. Hard to find another people like Albanians that are so mixed with each other by marrying with other religions. We have to say without being afraid that we are spiritual people, laic people.

I am a practicing Muslim from Albania and will agree with your assessment somewhat. The only thing that I can add is that Albania is more of Muslim country than any Christian country belonging to Christianity.

Yes Albania is a Muslim country thanks to Almighty God. And Eid isn't celebrated just like i have a day off but streets are full of believers praying the Eid prayer as mosques are not enough to accommodate all of us.

I was born and raised in Kosovo, I grew up and never spoken about religion. Even though had christians just across the river and always called them brothers as they were Albanians too. But at the age 27 in 2014 moved to Australia, that’s when i was asked about religion. I was confused and shocked as it was totally new topic to talk about. What’s religion? It’s a private connection between you and your God or believe that’s all it is . Why does world need to talk and worry about religion so much .

So true! In every religious holidays, we invite all our friends and family (who are always a mix of everything!) to join us and share meals, happiness and love. I have a Muslim heritage. When I was a student, every Orthodox Easter, my best friend and also my room mate, would wake me up at midnight and we had to get our candles, wear our best clothes and go to church. This is one of my best memories with my best friend - It solidified our relationship in a very interesting way. I understood more about her and her family, how they pray and their rituals during Easter. I still love going to an Orthodox church and be amazed by the love & solidarity but also the beauty of the churches. My friend has always been part of my family and not once, religion has been a topic of conversation for 26 years. My experience is not unique at all and 99% of Albanians share the same bond with fellow citizens. Having each religious celebration as a national holiday makes everyone at ease with the fact that every religion in genesis asks for the same rules to be respected - Peace, Love and Respect for each other!
To answer the title of this video. Albania is a home a lot of religions, Here you can practice whatever you wish but before everything else we are all Albanians and religion was never a problem because we respect one another.

Well I can tell you based on my family experience. I know one person who prays, in over 200 family from my dad and mothers side. Most they don't care about religion, but they respect it. It is more personal....
We do celebrate muslim holidays, by having a family lunch and visiting relatives. But we celebrate Christmas by having lots of parties :) We put christmas trees and decorate houses, like any western countries.
Personally I say Im not atheist, but more "Im realist" :)

My parents and many relatives of mine and people I know have been happily married to partners from different religions. I am proud that my country and people do not treat each other based on what others believe (which is a thing between you and your God) but based on the actions and kindness. Albanians as a people are neither de facto nor de jure a 'Muslim' people bcs Albanians were originally Christian people who converted to Islam with the advance of Ottomans to the Balkans, mainly to avoid paying high tadex imposed by ottomans and to gain certain benefits, just like many centuried before that they converted to Christianity from Albanian paganism at the begining of Christian era. So, why aren't Albanians so crazy about two Abrahamian religions (Christianity and Islam)? The reason may lay in the actual role.that religion plays in human life. Religion gives people a sense of belonging and identitiy through communal rituals, speficic oral and written traditions etc... and Albanians already seem to have had plenty of that before the advent of Abrahamian religions (Christianity and later Islam) into their lands. They seem to have had plenty of Albanian traditions and slirtuality so they did not need to replace it with Abrahamian (Christian and later Islamic). They certainly adopted a lot of Christian and later Islamic traditions, but those never overwhelemed their Albanian traditions and Albaniam identity ...and this has nothing to do with communism bcs even those Albanians that never ever lived under communism (such as the Italian Albanians - Arbreshe, Greek Albanians-Arvanites, and the diaspora Albanians) identified themseves primarily as Albanians rather than adherents of this or that religion. Only those Albanians who were.not raised in Albanian traditions and never got to learn much about Albanian traditions, culture and history seem to identify more with religion than with Albanianess and they do not seem to be the majority, as far as I can see as an Albanian.

The main reason for Albanians generally being unreligious is because of Enver Hoxhas brutal stalinst communism which lasted for 50 years and so anyone that was caught praying or mentioning god , especially after 1967 was tortured or executed . Over 2000 religious buildings were either demolished or converted into cinemas and gymnasiums. Old manuscripts burnt to ashes. From my city ,Shkoder, all mosques were demolished apart from one as well as churches. Religious names were forcefully changed into communist atheist names that’s why you can see the difference in name changes from 1970s+ . For example pre 1970s Muslim names include : Xhemal, Enver,Muhamet,Hajrullah,Hasan, Esat , Mustafa ,etc for men and for Muslim women : Nexhmije, Hajrije,Fatime, Hatixhe, Xhemile ,Zejnepe ,etc .However post 1970s you’ve got men’s names like : Ilir, Agron, Arber, Arian, Gzim, Lulzim, Fitim, Beni, Bekim, etc . Whereas post 1970s women’s names include : Dhurate, Vera, Shpresa, Vjollca, Kuqja, Lirija . All in all my point is that faith and belief in religion was ripped out of Albanians under Enver Hoxha , that’s why you can see a clear difference between the older people who lived before communism took hold and the Young people. It’s also interesting because you can see the difference religiously between Albanians outside of Albania proper as they escaped a harsher punishment and pressure from Albanians communism instead of Yugoslavian communism...

People that used to be religious then today are not at all. Mass media and the internet did it into atheism, but we were never practicing. The youth of turkey is more atheistic then ever let alone a nation which was never islamic like us. Check the names they all give their kids, its all Euro Christian names. Women of hijab are not even 1/100th of 1%.

I have Albanian and Kosovar friends many of them I go to there homes I know them very well. 10 years ago when i met them they hardly cared about Islam now there is huge difference...In Chicago they have there own big masjid every where else in USA you can see Albanian women in hijab and men going to masjid. Maybe it is different in where you live I don't know about that.

Even statistically, we are not. Secondly, and the most important, is that the Albanians have never been deeply fanatics of religion. This separate us from many other cultures. The other, very significant value of the Albanians, is that, different from other nations and cultures, we never have in our history clashes among religions. Hard to find another people like Albanians that are so mixed with each other by marrying with other religions. We have to say without being afraid that we are spiritual people, laic people.

I mean pre 1970s names were religious like Xhemal, Kadri, Mustafa,muhamet, isa, imer . And then came the name laws that were forcefully changed to non religious names like your generation, Visar,drilon,agron, luan, ilir and others. So yeah it’s to do with communist laws that were designed to forcefully distance itself from religion...

Not a good point. Prior to Enver Hoxha banning religious names they were extremely common. Look at all the albanian historical figures Ismaili Qemali, Abdyl Frasheri, Hassan Tashini, Enver Hoxha, Mehmet Shehu. Before enver Hoxha banned religious names everyone has a religious name

@Ers Leka Thanks a lot. We in Russia have kinda same thing regarding the religion and culture. I guess that came from the Soviet times. But i live in the town where people are a bit hostile by the nature and after States where people are really frinedly all the time it starting to wearing me off. And i really like sea and nature, plus you guys have a fantastic language. So it seems as a good place for me to live.

I am a practicing Muslim from Albania and will agree with your assessment somewhat. The only thing that I can add is that Albania is more of Muslim country than any Christian country belonging to Christianity.

Çams are the perfect example, all Albanians who believe are Greek because their ancestors fought for the liberation of Greece 200 years ago. Same thing in Serbia. James,watching your videos reminds me when I first came to the States from then communist Albania.I was shocked and in awe of the freedoms people enjoyed here and promised myself to never forget that feeling. As time went on I find more and more things to complain about.the same I'm afraid will happened to you.Enjoy while it's still sort of new.videos are great and do a lot for the tourism industry.
Well, the truth is, I am already finding things to complain about. However, I keep those to myself for the most part - and especially off of the internet.
Not to mention the government is talking away the freedoms of people in the US.
