It's a good question! In their 'tun state' tardigrades can actually be picked up and transported surprisingly large distances via the wind, and I assume this is how they initially colonised the moss on this roof before some were ultimately washed into the gutter during rainfall. (Another possibility is that they originally hitched a ride on an animal such as a snail - something that has been observed in tardigrades elsewhere). I may explore this more in a future video.
