    Those looked like some dope Bahn Mis! I am 16 years older than you and am pursuing life outside of corp America. I've worked since I was a teenager. Enough is enough, this idea that you have to work until your mid-60s (or even later due to the economy) is vile, and it's inspiring to see people move away from this "life script".

    I really like the content you upload and your decision seems very brave to me. For a few years now I have been saving money to quit, but I don't have a clear goal like yours.
    For now, I will continue working and saving, in case the opportunity presents itself (or if I have a great idea)
    Good luck and I believe you will achieve your goal, your content is very good and enjoyable ☺️💜

    just got laid off this May and have not accepted a new job since. currently my day-to-day life, other than applying for a new job, I reconnect to doing things I love. living on my compensation and savings, but it's starting to eat me mentally. tbh, I'm scared, with today's job industry, I can't even get a job at all... even if I have savings, if I don't get a stable income, the savings will not save me anymore :( I'm just turning 25 this month, btw..

    I love how realistic this vlog is, Evelyn! Whenever I travel alone locally, people would ask me who financed my travel and if I already have a boyfriend (I'm very single 🤭), because I was able to travel. 🥲 They don't know how much planning, saving, and a bit of sacrificing I did just to make the travel happen. I'd love to be provided for by a man but I'm also self-sufficient. So to that person who commented on your vlog about having a rich daddy/bf, he/she needs to realize that it's the modern times, and women can be self-sufficient. ❤

      Thanks so much for sharing! I feel the need to call those people out because hearing sexist comments thrown out into the world without being challenged makes little girls feel like this is how it should be. No, it shouldn't be the norm that when women quit their jobs or travel alone that the assumption is they are funded by the men in their lives. Let's please start assuming that women are self sufficient💪

    Love the vibes. Just curious, how many books do you go though a month? Seems like you talk more about the ideas from non-fiction books yet you seem to always have fiction in hand so curious how you think about that intersection on what to read

    • @tapiocapress
      @tapiocapress  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the great questions! I’m actually a slow reader (that’s why even though I love books I can never be a booktuber), and go through 3-4 books a month - bear in mind that I don’t work on a job now so that gives me loads of extra time to read. I love reading fiction for fun, but read non-fiction when I’m really curious about something (usually behavioral economics), or want to learn about a particular topic. And I pick books to read based on “what I want to read the most at the moment”, otherwise I would have a hard time finishing it…

    As someone who's income is also mostly online and is considering permanently moving back home to China after half of my life spent in the US, the daily expenditure difference has always been the major appeal, but you've also shown how important it really is to be in an environment where it's safe to ride a bike to get groceries, vs buying whatever you feel like because there's room in the car. I've realized that since quitting, there is no real need to rush a permanent day-off, so the simple things like "having to walk/bike" become less about inconvenience and more about fulfillment, and that realization kickstarts a cycle towards an overall healthier active lifestyle of which you wouldn't need to then make time and set aside money for to achieve via the gyms and overpriced pseudo-healthy foods in the US. This really affirms that we're both onto something, thanks for keeping it real and transparent! 😲

    • @tapiocapress
      @tapiocapress  ปีที่แล้ว +34

      I was in the US when instacart and amazon fresh first started and I could not understand the appeal of paying for someone to get your groceries, because going to the grocery store was such a joyful thing to me - which is why coming back to China and getting most things online feels like something is missing from life...but, at the same time, cost of living is much much lower here. There's no perfect place in the world, only the places that make you most happy despite their imperfections. All the very very best:)

      i understand you're view, perhaps japan is better? provided you can live off of savings or smth free of japan's over work industry the things you said being able to safely ride a bike to get groceries, you can get healthy food for very cheap. and japan doesnt censor or you are not in danger of "disappearing" for thing you have said

    Wow.... so much cheaper living in the mainland. Food there is super affordable as well.
    I live in one of the most expensive places in the entire world atm. I also keep a record of all of my spending. On avg... I spend approx 1000HKD / month. My 80sq ft matchbox room alone ( no kitchen/ toilets/ windows ) cost a little over 3k hkd... but do get partial govn't subsidy due to health issues. So that, plus food, utilities... and everything comes up to around 1K hkd ( out of pocket ). Have to be EXTREMELY frugal to survive....

    The cost of living is crazy there 😭 In Australia, it costs around 150 AUD (~90USD) for my partner and I for GROCERIES ONLY per week. And that's at the minimum since usually we go over that. We're students so that's on the low end of what people spend here

    • @tapiocapress
      @tapiocapress  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thats’s crazy!!! When I lived in the US it was almost impossible to walk out of the grocery store without spending 100 USD (and I used to go every week), but now I rarely spend more than 10 USD on a grocery trip…crazy to think about this massive difference!

    • @A88-p5e
      @A88-p5e ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@superthevibe this came across kind of rude. "it's not hard to buy things only when on sale or clearance". Yet we're in a cost of living crisis. Yes, it is hard. We only buy from Aldi or homebrand and always at the lowest unit cost. There's not always food on clearance at our supermarket and if there is, it goes bad quickly. We rarely eat out bcus it's so expensive so we're buying enough food for 7 days of food. We don't have time to go to the supermarket every day to look for clearance. We also have two cats to buy litter and food for (which is part of that cost). It all adds up.
      Everyone's different. $150 - $170 (what we spend) is not "really high". It's very average for our area. Your spending would be on the low end considering the average household spends $170+ per week. Even at $100-$150, the costs she described in the video are absolutely significantly lower. Spending only a few dollars on eating out and only 10 USD at the grocery store is unheard of here.

    As for thoughts on the digital nomad lifestyle, I feel like it has some negative connotations these days. Those are mostly because of people who have higher paying jobs and move to lower cost of living places to specifically take advantage of the resources, while not respecting the local community, culture, or laws. In some more popular destinations, the local communities have complained about rapid gentrification, cost of living going up too quickly, and disparity because of too much people coming into a small area that do not have all the resources to support the population. There has also been a couple of well known incidents that caused controversy online with certain individuals disrespecting local communities. But I feel like there has to be a way to be ethical and respectful and still do it if you have the right mindset.

    • @tapiocapress
      @tapiocapress  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks so much for the insight! I hesitate to describe my lifestyle as truly "digital nomad", because I live China, and am considered a local. My friends in China who are from different parts of the world are very interested in the local culture and respectful of the laws (lovely ppl), however I can totally understand how a huge influx of digital nomads with higher purchasing powers would disrupt small local communities in detrimental ways...I'm an optimist and do agree that there has to be a way to do it ethically and respectfully!

  • @luciamadero908

    I am all for digital nomads, but there are some things to consider. If a person is moving say from the US to Mexico to cut their cost of living, I thinks it valid but there tenda to be a sense of superiority from the foreigneres going to these cheaper places. I think it is important to consider the amount of time spent in a new place and how a foreigner can contribute to the community there - say if staying a year pay the local taxes (if staying a month I think its fine). And make sure they are respecting the culture, people, ans undestand their privilege and that eventhough for them its cheap for some of the local people it is still expensive. I know you are Chinese so I dont think rhis applies to you but just some thoughts.

But we are a team and my wife and I are on the same page. Your content is inspiring to see and how thoughtful you are about your lifestyle is a goal I have for myself. Thank you!

    You have a very enjoyable channel.
    Another YT creator that I followed before you (you might already be aware of who he is lol) mentioned your channel in one of his latest videos. He was definitely critiquing your content style, but I think he just ended up giving you more exposure and free promotion in the end. Haha!! I hope you continue growing regardless of what anyone says.

      I feel you! It gets tough when you are at home all day every day, just yourself and the computer. I have been trying to get out of the house once a day, and it really helps! In the mean time I'm trying to make more friends in the city...it's so hard trying to not fill every moment with productivity when I feel so much pressure to make my own career work, but it's so important to make time for friendships!

    I do not read Chinese so I never know what to do with the laundry detergent and fabric softener. I am just guessing which of the three holes of the washer they go in, but it seems you just throw it all in together. Maybe I should try it that way! lol. It is all going in eventually anyways, I guess.

    I had previously asked in another one of your videos how you were handling your finances after quitting your job because I wanted to know if you had other sources of income or savings assisting with reoccurring bills and/or debt. Of course I end up finding this video in my feed! Glad you were transparent on this because I kept seeing so many videos of people quitting their corp life to pursue a creative job but they never disclose how they're able to pay for these things when they don't have that constant income flow.
