A big round of applause for your courage! I’m 64 with 3 late 20s daughters. I’ve worked in corporate my entire working life; we didn’t have a lot of options when I was in my 20s. I’ve encouraged my daughters to switch careers when and if they are not enjoying them; life is a series of zigs and zags. Do it when you’re young. As a famous hockey player once said: “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”.

I just did this too. I quit a job (dream job) that I worked so hard for and ended up in a deep depression. But since I left my mental health has gotten better. Life is about constantly figuring it out and that will come with making mistakes and learning from them.

The hardest part of quitting for me was detaching my identity and self worth from my job title or the company I worked for...I'm glad you made the right decision. You got this!

    • @johnklus
      @johnklus ปีที่แล้ว +4

@tapiocapress thanks you. That’s the same for me as well. I’m sure it’s the same for anyone because sometimes we spend so much time doing this job and one of the first things people ask us when they meet us is “what do you do for work” We’re so used to doing the same habit that it naturally becomes part of us that is hard to shed off if it doesn’t feel right. Take care!

You are not alone! I had what I thought was my dream job, and before a year had even passed I was so burnt out and miserable and hating my life. I never comment. I just found this video, and I related enough to click on it. I'm a 33 year old solo mum of two. I quit my 6 figure corporate job 2 years ago to be home with my girls. I took a year off, and now I'm working casually in a creative job I love. Money is tight, but we get by, and now my time is spent with my children and pursuing my creative passions. No more burnout. No more juggling. It will work out for you, just keep doing what you're doing. You've already done the hardest thing 😉 xx

Make sure you save enough before you do! I didn’t 😢. I went from banking to starting my own gardening business. I didn’t get any customers for most of the season, but now things are picking up. It’s the freedom you have that’s important, BUT, you have to, at the start, work harder than you ever have, until things get going. I can’t tell you the amount of times I almost…gave up…yeah, THAT giving up…

I finally quit my job after realizing I was choosing money over my happiness. The only reason I was staying was because every year my salary was increasing and I was doubting I would ever make the same amount of money. But my life was passing me by and I didn’t have a single moment of memory besides having kids and working during those years. I feel like the US is the only place where if you don’t work your whole life changes and we choose money over living. You got this and like I tell my sister take your time and don’t rush into another job. Find a job you truly love.

Fellow ex-employee from big 4 and holyfrick the burnout you feel goes all the way down into your bones. It was something that was so difficult to explain to others around me because they would just ask 'but why... you work more than us, sure, but you have the rest of your day after that?'
I quit, changed jobs and ended up in a even worse burnout elsewhere and am now doing the unemployment dance and contemplating content creation.

It's been exciting following your journey, Evelyn! I resonated with what you said about 1) The psychological burnout from jobs, 2) A job serving as a fallback, and 3) going "All in" on doing something you love. All of those were factors in why I quit my job last year, too. 😆 Your content is engaging and authentic, and the consistency and effort you've been putting into it will pay off. i want to thank you for sharing your journey! i quit my corporate job a month ago. i don't have as much saved up, but it was killing my soul. it really warms me and allows me to feel less alone knowing that others feel similarly about the corporate work place, and find ways to make it work outside of it, even when they don't have it all fully "figured out." perhaps going through life IS figuring it out, rather than overthinking a plan and watching it all change as we go through it anyway.
you're doing great, and you're wonderful!

  • @nathananderson8720

This video inspired me to create a video about the great resignation. It took me about 6 months to create this on top of my full-time job, setting aside at least 4x of 1 hr workout per week, cooking healthy foods that take hours to prepare, rejecting so many night outs just to spend more time pursuing my passion while having so many people discourage me from creating meaningful videos online like this channel.
As you can tell, personal development isn’t a joke because there are so many sacrifices to be made, which are often uncomfortable but knowing that there are also so many like-minded individuals who have passion for becoming a better version of themselves each day and who are willing to show support makes me more motivated to keep pursuing my passion for creativity and intense desire to provide as much value as I could.
When I was a kid, all I wanted was to have a career that pays well so I can buy whatever I want but now that I’m grown up and went through tons of setbacks from losing tons of people in my life, getting lost in the world with full of life traps, being ridiculed for pursuing my dreams, having so many people tell me that I’m merely wasting my time creating a meaningful content online, and so on, I can say that long-lasting happiness can’t be bought or earned because it comes from within us

Evelyn! Haven't seen one of your videos in a while so I was happy to see this pop up in my feed. I'm also ~6 months into my adult gap year (quitting corporate) and found this video to be so relatable. It's truly a humbling experience to be a little bit off of the mainstream and have to figure out how to navigate it all. The question I get asked most by my friends is what I do all day which definitely also can and has led to self doubt. But I've found that so far one of the most interesting parts of this experience is developing the confidence in myself as a person and not just being defined by my job or work. Cheering you on, girl~

My life without a job, which was over 10 years ago now:
First two months I just went on walks. I was kind of elated because I wasted my 20s working this stupid job for a small business owner I kind of hated and didn't respect.
Once I caught up on sleep and decompressed, I started taking computer programming classes and tutoring other students. That was a lot of fun and I was super motivated because it was the first time I was doing something that was my idea for my benefit, so I studied well and got A+ grades.
After six months of that I got an offer for what turned out to be kind of a dumb job that now I've been doing for 11 years at 3 companies. I make 150k and most of the time I don't have to work much so there's that (I'm on the clock now but no one wants me to do anything so...cool). I'm going to walk downtown and get a burrito just to make sure I see other people today. It's kind of weird but it's chill enough and I'm certainly not starving so...whatever.

I started youtube thinking YESS let's make productivity vlogs, since I'm a corporate girl and then while editing all the videos I realized how I just do the same thing over and over and how much I really do not enjoy sitting in front of my computer, dealing with unreal demands. I am slowly shifting to having more time with friends, going places when I can while still in corporate, but ultimate goal is to not be here anymore in 2 years. I'm glad I found you. My husband and i quit our jobs earlier this year and moved to another country to live a stressfree life. We love not being tied down to a schedule or having anyone tell us what to do or how to live our lives. We planned it during the covid lockdowns in our home country and so it took 3 years to save enough money to not have to work. We do have hobbies that bring in enough money to live in our new country so as not to touch our savings but if we choose to not do those it doesn't matter. Yes, i know we are privileged and no we don't take it for granted! We are not of retirement age so planning was definitely key!

    Loved the vlog !
I quit my job in May, it was one of the scariest things I have ever done. I felt both certain and uncertain of my decision; but I was burnt out and had severe anxiety and I knew I deserved a break. The last couple of months have been relaxing and healing, I realized I was not spending enough time on myself. I was living a very slow and relaxed life for the most part these last couple of months.
I'm also very fortunate and privileged to have been able to take this tie off. I know my parents would have never been able to, so I am thankful for each day.
I'm just now feeling ready to return to the workforce rejuvenated and ready.
I am happy to know that my decision was not crazy and that others are also have taken this step.
Very happy for you and wishing you the best on this journey!!! :)

Found your video at the perfect time! Just went back to work after a 2 week vacation and have spent the past few years saving up to leave and build my art career! I even started my TH-cam channel up again to begin documenting the journey! This is very inspiring and gives me hope :)

I just found you today and HOLY SHIT! I'm also Evelyn! I'm also Chinese! I also just quit my job recently and am also considering making content! (Not necessarily TH-cam but something creative) Right now I'm only looking to get employed so that I can live with my partner on our own, but I don't ever want to go back to being stuck in a 9 to 5 office job again. I feel like I found my long lost twin! I'm looking forward to following your journey, fellow Evelyn :3

Hi Evelyn! Just found your channel and this video resonated and spoke to me so much! I'm currently navigating a burnout from work and taking the time to rest and figure out what I want to do and where I want to be. The idea of quitting my job (financial instability) scares me, but I want to give myself - along with my creative side which has been neglected for too long - an opportunity. As Chinese-Italian, I have been fantasising about going back to China for a while (haven't bene there in 6 years!) and watching your vlogs really make me miss China 😭✨💖 who knows, maybe I'll be there soon! Hope to meet you and hang out one day! Keep it up & good luck with this new endeavour! 💪 加油!

This video popped up on my feed and I am so glad I clicked on it! I am currently not in a job and am worried about finances (am lucky to live with a family member currently) and TH-cam/content creating doesn't even sit at 30 dollars (it's 0 😅). But I am making some videos and enjoying the process as I figure out my life. This video was very on time and relevant to me ❤ thank you!

I'm so glad you have stumbled across your channel, there's so little "Abc" vlogging from China, and I've always wanted to see more of how life might be like for someone grown up and worked abroad. So excited to see more of your content, you're sharing is so inspiring ❤❤❤ and your video and filming style is so calming and enjoyable. Good luck girl! I hope you succeed. I can't afford the life/home I want yet and have too much student loans to quit my job right now but there's not a day that I don't wish I could work less or at least had the option to work from home. I know that I'm insanely blessed but it's hard when I'm an introvert and just wanted to be a house wife and mom! Work life balance is so different than it was a century ago. Maybe wanting/needing less is the key. Easier said than done though lol. Everyone craves for that slow life now. All I can do is work towards it now. Hopefully, we can all make it there some day and live the rest of our lives peacefully!
