How to Optimize Tilting Stability in RC Crawlers

  • This movie shows, how to increase the tilting angle of RC crawlers by widening the wheelbase and/or adding axle and bumper weights. A mathematical formula is being derived that can be used to predict the increased tilting angle as a function of widened wheelbase and added mass. Feel free using this formula to optimize the tilting behavior of your RC crawler.
    Correction:
The term "wheelbase" was used in the wrong way. The wheelbase refers only to the distance of wheel axes in the longitudinal direction (front-back). Here "wheelbase" must be replaced by "track width" (distance between left and right wheel).
These RC crawlers have been included in this video:
MST CFX-W J45C Kit, with some upgrades.
Traxxas TRX-4 Chevrolet Blazer, with some minor upgrades.
    Added components:
Heavier wheels of MST CFX-W J45C: SR02 1.9″ Steel beadlock wheels from GMADE including tires PB9011NK 1.9 rock beast XL from PITBULL
Additional weights at axles and bumbers from Banggood & Aliexpress
Wheelbase extension: Hub Hex Wheel Drive Adapter 20 mm Extension for 1/10 RC Crawler from Banggood

Thank you - this is really helpful! I'm widening my track width and putting more weight down low. Will experiment with it

Good teaching, that helps to solve our problems of scale trucks.

Widening the track, the wheelbase is the distance between the front and rear axle

You are correct. This was a translation error, and has been mentioned in the comments of the movie.

I've got my CG where I need it I can sidehill over 50degress already spent time playing with different setup's it'll stand at 60degrees depending on the surface nice explanation 👌🏻🍻🍻

First thing I noticed at the beginning of the video is the direction of the wheels on the blazer. Truck went left to roll in first clip and then it went right to stay upright in second clip. Completely different. No wonder it rolled.
While I have know doubt a wider stance and weight down low helps. Approach also has a lot to do with keeping it upright.

Sure, you are completely right. In the Blazer the tilting improvement was less than only 2 degrees anyways, which makes it difficult to detect a difference on track. The verification parts in nature are more to explain the basic idea - to show the potential of an optimization wrt to the design. They are not the proof! The math/physics part are the real proof!
Thank you; keep watching, especially my next clip about spring suspension which is coming soon! 😉

Your music too loud and your voice too soft. Need to be a DJ so my ears don't burst out of sudden loud sounds. But your ideas are good. It will help a lot of people 👍

Thanks for sharing very informative info..My rig is 4WS capra, I intend to add brass steering knuckles and portal cover weight for the front only which will give additional 270g in total ,do you recommend i should consider for rear?

    • @rcscientific6004
      @rcscientific6004  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for your interest. Additional weight at the back moves the overall center of mass of your rig further downwards, which is good. It also moves it further back, which can be good or not, depends where the other heavy parts (eg batt) are located, and how you want to change your rigs behavior in longitudinal direction.

Really thankful you took time to compile the scentific explanation behind each exploration and much appreciated your kindneas for such details sharing.... I have one request if you may the knowledge of shock oil comparison for crawler, would you do what sort of shock oil (eg. Cat) will do the shock for application for best outcome... 😂 Hope this see this soon...

BASICALLY, PUT UNSPRUNG WEIGHT DOWN LOW. AND CAREFUL WHERE YOU PUT YOUR UPPER WEIGHT !!
