Thank you for sharing this story. I am overwhelmed by the care you give the reading, each word of the author's a treasure, nothing to be hurried or skipped over.
Such a beautifully written story, allowing me to experience a time and place and people so different from my own. The reader, too, helped bring the words to life.
I have listened to this presentation a couple of times. It will tug at heart strings if they are tuned well enough. Greg, your narration is perfect. Thank you. I’m sure I’ll listen again...
“A plaintive murmur rose in the night; a murmur saddening and startling, as if the great solitudes of surrounding woods had tried to whisper into his ear the wisdom of their immense and lofty indifference. Sounds hesitating and vague floated in the air around him, shaped themselves slowly into words; and at last flowed on gently in a murmuring stream of soft and monotonous sentences”
Stunningly powerful. A deep and mournful tale. So much we cannot understand about one another, especially between cultures and languages. But the great universals of love and death transcend our differences, making us all One.
A very moving story enhanced by the wonderful narration. I was forced to read Conrad in school and never read him afterwards . Such a pity. But now I see why he is so highly regarded, which unfortunately i could not fathom in my youth.
Conrad writing in his Third language !? ! By birth a Polish speaker he moved to France initially and became fluent in French before eventually settling in England. His mastery of the English language is quite stunning . His style was dense and demands a little effort on the part of the reader but is well worth the effort .
Conrad never disappoints. He is a great writer, but it is a pity that high school and college students are forced to read him. His stories are not for the immature. Thank you for your careful narration.

Great illustration as well
Conrad’s letters reveals that this story is a “transcription “ his narrative version of Wagner’s music drama Tristan und Isolde.
Great, Greg!

How is the setting of the lagoon the perfect embodiment of the illusory world of man’s actions? help? xx
Perhaps it's that lagoons are still water - still as death - which blends with the stillness of the forest.
