They were lucky in that the three voices of Freddie, Brian, and Roger totally complimented each other. That said, Brain said that Freddie was like a metronome and had the ability to record multi-track vocals that totally phased. You can hear this in the beginning of BoRhap and the album version of You Take My Breath Away. There are others but i can’t think of them off the top of my head, but once you know what to look for you can tell when it is just Freddie multi-tracking his vocals. But my word, the three of them together are magnificent as well !! So happy to see how much you are enjoying the Queen rabbit hole.

This was 50 years ago. Back when bands got by on talent. There was no autotune. No CGI. Just the real thing.

Brian wrote this song from the dream he had, he said people had no connection to each other, people would try to touch others hands to try to have human caring. If only you had headphones, the music bounces from ear to ear really amazing especially from the 70s, Queen was very innovative. Great reaction

Do yourself a huge favor - listen to this again on your own, through excellent quality headphones.
Brian wrote this at a time he was in and out of hospitals with serious illnesses - the idea of this song (vision, if you will) first came to him in the midst of fever-dreams… if you’ll notice, sections of it are heavy with almost biblical imagery , especially Noah’s Ark.
Brian has often had ideas come to him in his dreams, waking with a drive to pursue developing the idea fully - not just in music either. The man is a genius.

There’s another reactor, I forget his name, who teaches music and said that the next time he teaches a canon he will use this as a great example on how to put a canon together. Remember this is before digital and the whole section in the middle where Freddie is harmonizing with himself on delay was done manually with Freddie listening to himself. Such musical geniuses.

Doug Helvering - The Daily Doug. He does a great reaction and breakdown. There is also a video where Brian breaks down how they made this song. Well worth checking both out.

It is a masterpiece, one of the many that Queen had created. Autotune was not invented until 1997. Six years after Freddie passed. So just pure talent.

Brian's outstanding masterpiece based on a dream he had and also has biblical overtones. I love this song. Not only was there no auto tune, this was recorded on 16 track analog tape (if not only 8 track). What you are hearing is a delay that is called cannon effect. Brian came into the studio and showed it to Freddie. Freddie loved it and ran with it.

Brian once said that they were so good at recording vocal overlays that they were like a sausage factory, rolling them out. The achievement from the sheer challenge of the task to doing this makes it all the more phenomenal. Workhorses for the art of it. .

The opening lines are sung by Brian. Who is also playing a Japanese instrument called a Toy Koto. ( to open & close the song ) As well as his guitar. Japan fell in love with Queen. Very early on. They arrived in the mid 70s. Shocked to be met at the airport. By screaming fans.

no autotune, that echo part was a musical technique brian showed to freddie which was at the time still new and started getting popular, freddie loved it and gave it a go.
remember, Queen PERFECTED their craft of overlay vocals and ESPECIALLY HARMONIZATION since their beginnings. you are witnessing a band, who had their voices miraculously blended so well together, and they used that to their strength. love your reaction.

Awesome! Totally another gem of their genius! Proof pudding that Queen transcends everything imaginable, they were of and ahead of their time, and will always stand the test of time! There so many underrated songs, it's just tragic! Brian is a brilliant renaissance man, of Leonardo da Vinci level creative genius! His ballads are beyond compare! In writing song lyrics, I love how they explored every possible direction, meaning, topic and life situation imaginable, even delving into philosophy! There are definitely veiled references to Noah's Ark specifically, such as "two by two my human zoo" and "return like the white dove." Almost every culture has their own version of an apocalyptic flood. Alongside the guitar, the instrument played in the intro and finale is a Japanese toy koto. Queen was deeply influenced by Japan. When Queen went on tour there in 1973/74, no joke, it was like Beatlemania. The Japanese were the first to acknowledge Queen as the rock Gods they truly were and still are! As a huge gesture of gratitude and love, they wrote the song "Teo Toriatte" which is sung in English and Japanese which was released on the album "A day at the races". Check out the studio version. Please keep up the Queen journey, especially through grade A headphones!

Thanks for your reaction. I know people adore this one. It's clever, complicated and so interesting to watch during a concert like Hyde Park. See, Freddie wasn't the only one to write layered lyrics & melody - Brian had his fair share, like this one! That part when Freddie uses the vocal delay - wow. Four very intelligent, crazy clever, extremely talented musicians. (I think they're all wizards, Harry!)

it would have probably been better had Brian tightened the song up a bit but it's how he wanted it at the time
normally they do harmonies together by double tracking which is simply recording the line..then recording it again..to give a fuller or choir effect
on Bo Rap the intro is just Freddie harmonising with himself by double tracking and take my breath away...
on this song Brian suggested using a delay machine for the vocals and as Brian said you ask Freddie to do something he will give it back ten times more!
the middle section is just Freddie he is not double tracking but actually singing waiting for the delay when he would hear it and harmonise with it or do the next line slightly differently to create different effect so it was more than just echo effect which they have used on stage
it didn't happen so much when they harmonised together but when Freddie double tracked he was often so accurate it would faze which sometimes would work for a song but most songs would sound wrong so he had to intentionally sing it off to stop it fazing

A great band doesn't need auto tune. As far as what is that instrument, probably the red special, with the deaky amp, created by John Deacon. They only used the amp in the studio. Interesting story. Check it out

Thanks, Cash - no such thing as autotune in 1975... lol... this was written by guitarist Brian May... and on the same album as Bohemian Rhap... it's been called "Brian's Bo-Rap".. but although it's equally complicated, it's such a different song.. Brian is genius... always has been.. (okay, Freddie vocals are incredible...).. this is actually like a "round" .. think of "row, row, row your boat.. (come here/I hear you.. is a "round") it goes around, around, etc. lol

@@GinMae np just wanted to help 🙂 In "The Prophets Song" it is a Canon. A Canon can be sung with or without Instruments while in a capella there are no Instruments yet the a capella Singers can simulate Instruments like a contrabass or drums. They are also still very different. cu.

Even though there wasn't autotune, there were a few studio tricks like reverb and layering Queen could use! The choral vocals here are layered, so different tones recorded at different times and then combined so it sounds like more than just 3-4 of them were singing. Their voices weren't changed, though! It's the reason why they couldn't perform the operatic section of Bohemian Rhapsody on stage, since they couldn't replicate that layered sound effect. So cool - and it was HARD to do! There were reels of audiotape that had to be rewound and recoded back over and over again. Roger said they'd strip the film practically to its max with the number of layers they'd do, particularly for a song like "March of the Black Queen". It took a ridiculous amount of time - no computers!

As the commentators have said .. Brian had a dream about the Great Flood
so there are nods to Noah’s Ark .. “and two by two my human zoo”. 🌊🌧💦💦
