Marty was a writer, singer, actor, Nascar Driver, guitar player from Glendale, Az. This was the first of three songs. next up Are Big Iron; The Master's Call; My Woman, My Woman, My Wife; White Sports Coat. This song takes place in the late 1800's. The shooting wasn't the trouble, the stealing of the horse was the capital crime.

    • @nadjasunflower1387
      @nadjasunflower1387 7 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

came here to say this myself.
yup, the shooting was self defense, since the other cowboy made his play as well. it was the stealing of a horse, that would have got him hung. For those who read this and wonder WTF /Why ??? It's because in the south west, stealing a man's horse was akin to giving him a death sentence. a slow suffering death of no water, and impossible distance to travel to the next town on foot that would all but guarantee his death.

Another story teller face then was Jimmy Dean, yes the sausage guy. He wrote Big Bad John and later a follow up song about then president John F. Kennedy called PT 109. That was the boat Kennedy captained in WW2 and made him a hero.

Marty Robbins was a true country music superstar for four decades, and the Academy of Country Music voted him the artist of the decade for the 1960s. He's a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. His songs were recorded by Elvis, Johnny Cash, the Grateful Dead and many, many others. Don McLean of American Pie fame recorded an entire album of Marty Robbins songs. Johnny Cash once said "there is no greater country singer than Marty Robbins." Oh, and when he wasn't busy writing and singing, he was a well-known Nascar driver.

Everyone seems to forget one thing about the story. It wasn't the duel that was the problem. It was a fair fight. The other guy drew first. He had witnesses. It was the fact that the lover was a horse thief ("I got a good one, it looked like it could run, up on its back and away I did ride"). If that doesn't sound like a horse thief, I don't know what is. The importance of a horse in those days can't be under stressed. That's put more men to the gallows than just about anything else. There's a story in my family about a relative that was hung as a horse thief back in the mid-19th century. But that doesn't make the story sound like a love story.
My favorite is still "Big Iron." Great story.

Marty Robbins was an incredibly talented singer/songwriter, so much of his output were his own songs right throughout his career. He was a guest on the Johnny Cash show four times, such was the man in black's high opinion of him. Marty sang back up on John's recording of Marty's 'Song Of The Patriot' which surprisingly was not a big hit for Cash. Marty could sing many genres of music and is still today, one of the greatest vocalists that there has ever been in the music world.

I understand that you are looking at this song with a 21st century lens. As someone who grew up in the 60s, I had to shiver a bit when you referred to it's genre as "country". Its actual genre is much rarer now, "western". Back then, there were very few, if any, country radio stations. They were "country and western" stations, as this song shows, for good reason.

I remember back in the 70's starting my teen years, my dad had an 8-track tape player in his 65 Impala and he had a set of 8-track tapes called "Country Classics" and he would pop them in when we went places and this song was on one of them. I remember telling him that, these songs are OLD. And he said, " These songs are classics, what you talking about boy". But through the years I strated getting into them.
Another song on there that I love is from one of my dad's favorite old time singer's name Del Reeves. Back then, trucking songs were getting popular and there is one by Del Reeves called "Girl On The Billboard". Y'all should react to it someday. It's catchy and cool. I'll give one hint. Like the song says, it's about a girl wearing nothing but a smile, etc, etc, etc. LOL.
The version I chose is of Del singing it live on Country's Family Reunion Celebration surrounded by lots of country talent like the Glen Campbell song you two reacted to a while back. Del is older here , but still could put that song out like his younger days. "Del Reeves sings "Girl on the Billboard" live on Country's Family Reunion Celebration"

    Beautiful song💯
My grandmother was born & raised in El Paso, TX in the early 20th century but her name was Maria Alicia not Felena. She was ¼ Mescalero Apache & Mexica [meh SHEE kah] but she always said she was a "Texan". Being reminded of my grandma when I hear this song always brings a smile to my face & a little tear to my eye.
Interestingly enough, there actually is a Rosa's Cantina in El Paso open for business in 2025.
Thanks for reacting to this western classic.

This song reminds me of "Spring Time In Alaska" by Johnny Horton. A very good song and story. Marty Robbins was also a race car driver.

I believe that Marty drove a race car in NASCAR. Another singer for you to check out is Johnny Horton. I think his biggest hit was "The Battle of New Orleans". "Bismark" "Comanche" "North to Alaska". A John Wayne movie by the same name.

Marty Robbins: ‘A White Sport Coat (And a Pink Carnation)’, ‘Just Married’, ‘She Was Only Seventeen’, ‘Devil Woman’. My favourite Marty Robbins song is ‘My Woman, My Woman, My Wife’. Marty Robbins wrote this song whilst he was convalescing in a hospital bed after suffering a heart attack and as he was reflecting on his wife Marizona. The story goes that Marty asked his wife to hand him his guitar that was resting against the wall and he started serenading her leading to this song. This song would win Marty Robbins his second Grammy.

Every Sunday while I was growing up, my dad would load the "record changer" up with 5 albums about a 1/2-hour before dinner. I think this was one of his favorites, because I'm pretty sure it played about once a month, and he had maybe 100 LPs. I recall asking my dad if horse thievery was a higher crime than murder via gunfight, and he said, "Often times, yes." And he asked if I realized the song was sung in the afterlife... think about THAT one!
Great reaction! Thanks for the wonderful memories!

This song almost didn't get released because at 4 minutes, 38 seconds it was about twice as long as disc jockeys at the time wanted to play on the radio. Some interesting things about Marty. He was a pretty good race car driver with 35 NASCAR races under his belt with six top ten finishes. He had a bad heart and he had a heart attack on stage one time and actually finished his performance, so he had a lot in common with Bobby Darin. Due to his health problems perhaps there was a marked change in his appearance from his early days to later in life; when he started out he was noticeably chubby and later on he seemed to drop about fifty pounds or so and looked quite thin; a similar transformation as the comedian Sid Caesar. As for El Paso there are a lot similarities between El Paso and the Jay and the Americans' song Come A Little Bit Closer which was released five years later and which I'm sure you'd enjoy as well.

I’ve always loved this song. It’s iconic and in my opinion one of the best story songs of all time. Marty had so many great songs.
An instrumental version plays on the background music soundtrack in Frontierland at Disneyland.

A few years ago I was pouring through a couple crates of used LP records at a garage sale and came across an original pressing of "Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" by Marty Robbins in good condition. "El Paso" is the opening track on side 2. I bought it for the asking price of $1. Some days Erato, the ancient Greek muse of lyric choral poetry, just smiles upon a mere mortal.

Great reaction. The sad part of this story is that in the west. In most towns, a stranger and a local have a gunfight. No matter who wins, it is usually ruled self defense by the sheriff and no trial. Most times the stranger would be found guilty if he won, because towns looked after their own people. What sealed his fate, was he stole a horse. That is a death sentence, no excuses. No trial in most places. So the gunfight wasn't as big a deal but in his panic after killing a man, he ran and stole a horse. That was his big mistake and why he was being hunted down. Not for the shooting, but being a horse thief. Weird how the laws of the old west are different from today. Eventually as time passed, dueling, gunfights became the bigger crime as trains connected the west and horses became less important. Thanks for sharing your reaction.
