    WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
    Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
    Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
    The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
    We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

    • @holz_name
      @holz_name 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@whitegoose2017 It's really funny through. Back in the days, people had no problem defining God. God was just the superhuman being that blessed people, cursed people, creator of all good and evil, had prophets and gave visions. It was the classical personal God of the Greeks like Athena or Zeus. You just have to read the Bible. The Hebrew were polytheistic and then slowly replaced their gods with just Yahweh, who was just the best God, better than your God. Slowly, the other gods disappeared and there was just Yahweh.
      It wasn't even a supernatural being. Back in the days, God or Yahweh was part of the natural world. Just like the Greeks and Egyptians believed that their gods were part of the natural. I think it was only Thomas Aquinas in the 13th century was made the distinction between the supernatural and natural. Before, in the early history, gods were just part of the natural. They were just agents with superpowers, beyond mere mortals. But they weren't apart from nature. They did nature. They were nature.
      With science discovering the natural world, people had to distinct nature from God. God just wasn't found by science in nature. The modern "understanding" of God is in stark contrast to the understanding what God was in the times of Jesus. The rational conclusion would be of course to dismiss God as just another myth. Just like Zeus and all the other gods.

      @@holz_name There is a huge case to be made for the lack of complex words in the languages of that era, ergo their languages were poorer, thus describing complex phenomenons that had no apparent reasons behind them with fantastical explanations would have seemed plausible to ancient goat herders. Just to add to what you said. We are, after all.. talking about an era where writing and reading are actual skills. These days you take that for granted.

    • @John-vm2sq
      @John-vm2sq 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@holz_name I'm not a huge fan of NdT but I think his phrasing in this quote defines the God of the Gaps (what we are talking about when this God definition keeps getting more and more vague):
      "If that's how you want to invoke your evidence for God, then God is an ever-receding pocket of scientific ignorance that's getting smaller and smaller and smaller as time moves on - so just be ready for that to happen, if that's how you want to come at the problem." -NdT
      The fact that God has become so ill defined and downright vague as a concept points directly to how science has carved out and feasted on religious apologetics to where religion is an empty carcass. There is a reason why the argument of morality has become such a huge talking point in apologetics. It's because they don't have any other arguments left, especially those that defend the physical magic in their books. They are retreating to the philosophical side of the spectrum to remain relevant, which is why they focus on the morality argument more than anything tangible these days.
      God is an ever receding pocket of scientific ignorance. He/she/it has receded so far that apologetics are left philosphically discussing morality instead of combating science at its doorstep.
      It really reminds me of the "Liar Liar" movie quote when Jim Carrey says objection to the introduction of new evidence, and the judge asks why the objection and Carrey says, "because it's damaging to my case!"
      That is how potent science is at knocking down religious assertions. They have no recourse, zero retort, zero evidence, nothing to present as counter evidence. So they have all retreated to a philosophical God of "woo woo", where arguments have fallen so low that they are left defending "possibility" rather than "plausibility." That right there is the state of the religious mind in the 21st century. Clinging to possibilty rather than plausibility.

They then go on to assume that ALL atheists are just rejecting that same conception of god that they did in their youth and think that if we just learn about the "real" god they'll hop right back into Christianity.

    Look, I was a typical Catholic student. The nuns had me in Primary and Grammar school. But the brothers in High School were very laid back. And in Catholic (yes) college, even more laid back.
    Once I had the comparative religion class, where we freely talked about all the beliefs and practices (but not Mormon as I recall), it was all over. No religion, agnostic, and practically atheist.
    Yet, the Catholic/Lutheran/Anglican Music still grabs me. I wish it had different lyrics.
    But the real kicker is the fact that almost every interaction with Catholics is either distant or prescriptive/exclusionary. I don't need that crap.
    So, except for marvellous music, the artwork that is crumbling, buh bye religion.

    What CC doesn’t understand is that what he thinks of as atheism is just as much about theistic thinking patterns as it is about logic. In trying to disprove god and the supernatural he appears to have a default that it is a real thing that a clever argument can exterminate. But such a methodology is as doomed to failure as the effort to prove god. Having failed he is then able to seek some sort of truth in complex arguments. It kind of reminds me of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy when god discovers the proof of his own non-existence. Word games become a substitute reality for those avoiding the starkness of physical reality.

    The only audible voice I ever thought I heard just before I became an atheist was a loud booming voice that wasn't there. I even looked around the empty house, and no one else was inside. The weird thing was that it sounded mostly like my voice, and all the ”voice” said was my first name. It was loud like maybe someone would describe the voice of a god, such as shown in the movies when a god speaks. For about six months, I was afraid I might be becoming schizophrenic so I paid attention if I would ever hear another voice. Thankfully, that was over 20 years ago and I never started hearing voices in or out of my head except for that one time. That may have been the biggest relief in my life, because I value control over my own brain, which is also one reason I still don't drink even after becoming an ex-Mormon. It remind’s me of John Denver’s song, ”Think God I’m a Country Boy,” but thank god (I don't believe in) I’m not a schizophrenic boy.

    This is a well-intentioned guy. The first time he called in, he was so incredibly hot over terminology, and by the end of the call, he was quite civil, because he felt heard and engaged. This time here, he was civil the whole time. I think he just wants people to engage with him where he's at. And don't we all?? :)

    • @AzathothTheTrueGod
      @AzathothTheTrueGod 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well you’ve got a point about that last thing. However I’d say you were right, if he didn’t try to be met where he’s at, but a little more emphatically, his go to was “I know what you’re thinking” and claiming he used to be an “inner circle atheist”.
      Being stuck on terminology is fine. Happens to the best of us. But in his previous calls with the above arguments he just told them what they think in order to use his terminology to say that they can trust him because he’s done all the work of demonstrating his Catholic god.
      When it was pointed out that he did not and asked to actually demonstrate what he claimed he did by appealing to his own personal terminology he just repeated “I know EXACTLY what you’re thinking because I used to be part of your inner circle”.
      Then when he was hung up on because he wouldn’t be honest and constantly tried to tell everyone what they thought he got furious and said he would “ruin Matt Dilahunty’s career” for hurting his feelings by not letting him be dishonest.
      So well intentioned is a big stretch. He’s not a bad person at all, however he called back a bunch and lied about his name, just to vent and use the same basic scripts we’ve all heard. He also said criticism of the Catholic Church is a personal attack on all Catholics. Also questioning its teachings and crimes is seen as personal issue of hatred against them.

    What we have here is the use of the philosophical definition of a term (Steve McRae) versus the colloquial definition of a term (Talk Heathen). Which should we lean towards, an academic understanding with demonstrable backing and support, or “this is how general people use it, and I like people, so I’ll go with that one.” Now, one could go into the psychology of the unwillingness to accept a burden of proof for your claim, which is an interesting path to go down with the ACA style atheists.
