There is a huge amount of local history around this episode. Ireland had won the Eurovision several years in a row and it was becoming incredible expensive (the winners each year are the hosts the following year) for the Irish television service RTE to produce. So it was rumored that we started purposefully entering rubbish bands and songs to ensure we couldn't win. This episode was a tribute that those times. :)

the back story is that Ireland had several successes in Song for Europe at the time and it was costing them too much money to stage the event (winners host the next event in their own country), this was alluded to this episode and that is why they chose My Lovely Horse, so it would lose.

They won because the winning country gets to stage the event the next time. Dick Byrne suggested that it was becoming too expensive to stage as Ireland kept winning year after a year (they did win a lot), so deliberately set out to lose this time. The two hosts looked suitably embarrassed when this was mentioned..

It was 3 times in a row - ‘92, ‘93 and ‘94. Then they had a rest in ‘95 when they came 14th before winning again in ‘96. But that’s still a good track record. Their ‘94 entry was Rock And Roll Kids, sung by two geezers in their late middle age. A lot of people thought it was awful and the rumour started that they deliberately chose them in order to lose on purpose. But they still won!
John Lydon has put himself forward as a contender for Ireland this year. I don’t know how well he’s done or if he’s still in the running. Personally I don’t think the song shouts ‘winner’ but since it’s Johnny Rotten they may win again this year.

What's missing from the episode is the scene when Ted comes up with this idea to rip off another song and pass it off as their own because he thought it was obscure and that no one would notice. That's why he had the reaction in the elevator when he hear the sound being played knowing then it was more popular than he thought and would they would be found out.
I don't know why the scene where he comes up with the idea is missing! It's should be as it puts the rest of the show in context

The winners (country) of the annual Eurovision song contest are obliged to _host_ the big razzamattaz all night, competition final the next year.
In the 1990s, Ireland kept winning the competition consecutively, and so Ireland got to host seemingly EVERY year. The Eurovision Final is a LIVE broadcast to over 30 countries (?) and costs a fortune in tech and satellite fees alone, before adding in the whole VIP experience for the nobs and dignitaries from nearly every country imaginable (except the USA!).
Anyway, hosting doesn't generate a profit, it's just a prestige thing. The joke of this episode is that the Irish cynically wanted to deliberately lose the competition to spare themselves the enormous expense to what is a small GDP country.
Ordinarily the Irish public would phone in votes for their favourite contending song, but the presenters said that _this_ year (1996), that they themselves would choose the winner, picking Ted & Dougal's abyssmal effort because it was 100% certain to lose the final, and relieve Ireland of any further financial burden.

This episode is by far the funniest thing l ever saw. I remember hoping for the ads to come as l was laughing so much it was painful. It could not be made in Ireland because it was so offensive to the Catholic Church but it was screened in the pubs via satellite from British tv and naturally packed the pubs out. It could never be screened in the US for the same reasons it was not broadcast in Ireland. You could not even buy compatible DVDs which was a shame as l know my American cousin would have loved it. But Father Ted is more than a TV show. Just as the Beatles heralded social change in the 69s, this series broke old taboos and epitomizes the transition of Ireland into a truly modern country. In my opinion among the best television ever made anywhere.

@Boomer. This and the elderly priest football episode are the 2 best in my opinion. Ireland won the competition several times with really good songs.
    Boomer. A challenge
Do 'My Lovely Dog' and the challenge is 'an original tune/song played on a badly tuned guitar or only has 3 strings' and 10 line lyrics why you love your dog. Or an instrument you have never played. And the singing has to be monotonous. A challenge for everyone on this channel to take part in the challenge and submit entries here. But the lyrics your case might be an another pet or some random things like favourite mug, kitchen utensil or furniture. Short, bad lyric monotonous tune contest. It is a cringe worthy moments to watch. Could be uploaded on Shorts.

They ask what Father Jack thinks of the song and he pulls out a shotgun and shoots Ted's guitar out of his hands. Then they decide the songs shit till Ted hears Dougals record again from the beginning and persuades Dougal they should steal the tune, because its such an obsure song. The songs co-writers was Neil Hannon. In fairness, getting ‘when your arse is the size of a small country’ into a song is pretty impressive:

I remember years ago my grandmother gave us a DVD of 2 episodes from a newspaper (she wasn't a fan) and it included this episode which we all watched a thousand times until we were a little older and bought the Complete Boxset. The other episode on the DVD was one that King Boomer wasn't seen yet, so in the interest of not spoiling anything, I'll just say this...

Absolutely loved this reaction, esp your queen was making up a song for you and could hardly breath for laughing. Not entirely sure how they got The Divine Comedy to voice over the song in the dream sequence - but I guess as he wrote the main theme. Mind you, the words on the version of the song used for main theme released by The Divine Comedy are… more than a little bit odd.

Ireland winning the Eurovision back to back three years in a row then winning it again two years later is the inspiration behind this episode. There was a lot of talk at the time that hosting the contest was costing the country an absolute fortune, and the quality of Irish entries to the contest took a suspiciously low dive in subsequent years. We have yet to win the contest again. Dick Byrne mentioning in an off the cuff comment that the show was getting too expensive to host and the ever so slightly delayed laughter of the showrunner and presenter is just so much great icing on the top of a very delicious cake.

@@carolthomas6334 Geez time flies even more than I've always known it does then. I'm usually spot on with years but that's in topics I have a lot more interest in like Sport, film, actual music/artists I'm into etc...I was only 8 so I guess I got mixed up as I had that particular teacher in 94/95 & 95/96. I remember telling her the next day Norway won because she didn't watch it but was interested to know who won. I can't say I've watched it thoroughly many times but at this stage I'd never really watched it. My mum was as always, so I was hearing the results half heartedly paying attention but not much more than that and I even half forgot Norway's name to the teacher so I said the winner began with an N and then the teacher named some countries and when she said Norway I was like yeah that was it. I may have given her some flag details as well but saying Red I'm guessing she must've guessed Netherlands first she didn't get it straightaway I know that.
I was miles better with countries flags geography soon after as I got heavily into football in just over a year's time from there and learned loads from that.
