Do you have any knowledge if the strike is affecting mexico's productions as well? I just graduated college and im looking to get into the industry as any sound role, but it's getting tricky. There was always this "promise" that there's a lack of sound people in my city and that it should be easy to land a sound role

1st off, love your videos, we have learned so much going through them, but I do have a question when it comes to bidding on projects for Kit Rates.
So I've invested into a medium sized location sound kit in an attempt to get a friend of mine into a career in location sound. The kit includes x5 Sound Devices A20 minis, Cos-11ds, and x1 A20TX for a wireless boom, Nexus, bag, timecode slate, tentacle syncs, 35 Comteks, etc, the only thing we are missing is a cart, some external antennas, and some cam syncs (I think).
We are trying to figure out how to calculate a kit rate for shows. Do you offer a discount for longer shows or is it the same rate every day? Any advice would be awesome cause I would love to keep investing into the kit but there is so little information out there on how to calculate a kit rate that is not too expensive but also affordable for productions that falls in line competitively.

Also, I'm in the Vancouver area, not in America.

You might ask this in some Sound mixer forums to confirm my answer but I'm not aware that other countries function differently than America on this. In America, the day package rental rate is the day package rental rate. There is no 3 day week or any such discounts.

Had a moderately humorous comment teed up, but dang, this topic ain't funny.
Even in construction, if a job couldn't get a union shop to do the work, the project needed to pay prevailing wage to the tradesmen regardless. (in some states, it didn't work that way, but, good luck living in those buildings.)

Seriously. I feel it. The worst thing is that whenever you accept those discount rates, they push and push wanting more and more for free.

Sadly, not yet. Very few shows in America right now.

I feel like we have a conversation about this XD. For the past year or two I have been trying to build my kit and knowledge to justify or more better align with the standard. I'm not a seasoned mixer but I'm not a beginner either. Plus I'm non-union, "advanced" hobbyist. XD

You said sound is the only department that has specific job titles, Camera is the same way, even with how you are classified in 600. There's different initiations and dues per classification unlike other locals. So sound isn't the only department with specific roles.

I don't think I said that. In camera they have titles like 1st AC, 2nd AC... in sound we have different names.
