I love how Johnny Marr gives away an invaluable guitar to a largely unknown band and doesn't give a bollox. That really is a different level of class.

Have you ever mingled with rich people? They are the cheapest, most miserly fuckers imaginable. It's because he grew up working class Manc that he could empathize with Noel. Cheers to you Marr! Making Manchester proud! :)

agreed, most people who are rich from actually doing hard work are cheap as hell.. It's sort of how they stay rich ahha. Its the kids they raise that act like money grows on trees because they never lived without it.

It amazes me, as an American, how guys like Marr, and Noel especially, have true working class pedigrees, can be from dingy, dark regions like the north of England, and yet their quips and anecdotes are peppered with highly literate and educated thought and expression. I dont have the ear to pick out the differences in accents that may distinguish the british working class from the masses, as I am told you can, but you certainly cant tell by the content of their words. England has got to have a fine public education system. I spent countless nights when I couldnot sleep whiling away the hours listening to any interview on Noel I can get my hands on. He described Morrissey as "dour",,,cracks me up

To be fair, for every working class guy who can speak well, there's about 20 who can barely string a sentence together, especially these days within young people. At that's not be being high and mighty or looking down on anybody, i come from one of the statistically the worst council estate in statistically the worst place in the UK ha, far worse than where they did in fact. A lot of young people now from these places don't value educating themselves, they see it as a badge of honour to be "rough" and working class, when in fact a lot of them are not even working class, because they can't even be bothered to be that, instead many have a chip on their shoulder. Anyway, our public education system is not that great, probably no better or worse than most "developed" countries. It's just that you get a few guys who want something more out of life, and they're the kind of guys that you know. But as i say, there's plenty that are the total opposite of what you're talking about too. Same as everywhere really.

Libraries. Really, you can (could) come from a working class shithole in the north of England in the 70s and 80s, and not have a qualification to your name, but just because your dad shovels shit doesn't mean he's thick or you are duty-bound to be thick in order to represent your class.

But imagine being Liam that night: You're on stage singing, really in the zone, just you singing your heart out. All of a sudden you notice some commotion happening, you take a step backward and see the security people wrestling somebody down. Then you notice that your brother is gone and you go "What has happened?" you scan the stage and find your brother lying in the orchestra pit in front of the stage, which is a drop of six foot. You then put two and two together and decide to give that low life something to think about.

It was given to Pete by Joe Walsh, so there even more so. The consensus is it wasn't even a real sunburst, it was a conversion of a goldtop probably from around 1954, so it's not so bad. Noel had it put back together eventually anyway, you can see him use it on Jools Holland in 1995.

I also wouldn't let anyone touch a guitar that johnny marr gave me. the queen is dead was the first smiths album I ever heard and I was an instant fan.

Am I the only one who picked up on the irony that Noel smashed a fan over the head with a Gibson that originally belonged to the guy who smashed Abbie Hoffman over the head with a Gibson at Woodstock? I believe Pete's weapon of choice was an SG destroyed beyond recognition after the show, but hey, ya never know.

I remember back in 1982-ish, when my dad took me to buy me my very first electric guitar (I was 14) at a music store in downtown Oakland, they had a sunburst 1959 Les Paul Custom behind the counter displayed in its own cabinet. $10,000. It was beautiful. Can't imagine what it would be worth today. The guitar I did get was a burgundy Epiphone Riviera. Had to hawk it during some hard times. Sure wish I still had it.

1:46 If you're wondering what "a fortune" means here, here's a price guide reverb.com/price-guide/guide/798-gibson-les-paul-standard-1960-burst . $125,000-over $200,000 American, and that's for guitars without a Who and Smiths connection.

  • @jackdempsey9644

Between 1958-1960 only 1700 Les Pauls were made. That 1960 sunburst would be worth more than one could imagine, even without the history. A lot of younger people may not know this but in the late 80’s you couldn’t give away vintage instruments because nobody wanted them. Now these guitars are the holy grails. Great story!
