On the music theory end of this, its pretty cool stuff. You're working with polyrhythms. Using 7/4 time with the keys over 4/4 on the drums. Very nice. Lots of fun, and pretty unexplored in popular music. The first example that comes to mind is Street Lights by Kanye West off of 808s and Heartbreaks. The song is in 3/4 with a piano part playing 4/4 in the back
By the way, i discovered you that day that i first commented on this video and after starting at your first dilla video i found myself hours later still watching your videos. very nice stuff. love your enthusiasm for the art
"Get this Money" was the beat that made me wanna start learning how to make beats in 2000. It absolutely blew my mind, sounded out of this world space and futuristic. Still is nothing like it.
Great bar loops for yall! Try this out: the first number stands for the bars in a loop, and the second stands for the amount of times you'll need to cycle them to fit on a 4/4 beat. 3x4 = 12 ; 5x4 = 20 ; 6x2 = 12 ; 7x4 = 28 ; 10x2 = 20 ; 11x4 = 44 . 3, 5 , 6 , 7 , 10 , 11 bar loops work fine for a 4/4 beat. Repeat the loop until you hit a multiple of 4, and you'll have an interesting cycle.
Inspired me to bust out this 5 bar piano composition I wrote and stuffed away for a non-hip hop project.. these videos really just showcase what makes dolls great. Breaking the rules of hip hop. Period. Everything that makes his beats great is his constant flex on sampling and composition conventions. Great content, thanks!
Dilla could have sampled the Teletubbies theme song and that shit would've been fire lol. I really liked his sample from Tarika Blue but I mean all of his work was dope. Tight video. It's definitely forcing me to push my boundaries and try new things.
I think i heard a Isley Brothers sample in a Dilla song but can't remember the name of the song, but in general the way he samples old Soul music and R and B those are my favorite Dilla songs.
The Steve Miller Band sample...Climax.. I love how he sampled that song. and for some reason i still dont fully understand how he put it together @verysickbeats
u are so incredibly musical! this is gonna get forwarded and relentlessy shilled to all of my friends and acquaintances that are in the know, so 2 speek
my fav artist he sampled is frank zappa, he took the samples from one of zappa's songs "dance contest", and i just love everything about zappa, his style, his great knowledge he had about music, his ideas, everything. (the song is called Mash btw.)
+DanMorzeTheInspecta ...q-tip loves those odd number bar loops. I've heard him do 3, 5, 7, even 15-bar loops. I especially love when the hook is odd numbered, but then switches to even numbered for the verses. keeps you on your toes.
After watching your videos I learned that his Beats inspired me I tried to make the most messed up samples that have ofttimes and randomly put them together and then I go through and change the time signature and the swing to try to get them to match up. Polyrhythms my friends
I love your video, I’m also a very big j dilla also inspired by a lot of his music but couldn’t understand how some things worked and all that jazz but this last week been watching a whole lot of your stuff and it’s helped me kinda reach the next level I was wanting to reach
Slick! I got inspired to loop samples or percussion to a scale, like Aminor scale in notes ascending; - A,B,C,D,E,F,G...A. THe last A is like the C on the piano, just an octave higher. So 8 bar loop still. I figure this is easily done by transposing samples by semitones according to the scale. ;) Let me know if anyone wants to try this, Im allready on it so would love to hear others! also You can use a 6key scale where all keys are harmonic to make random triad chords. There would be many combinations such as: 123, 213, 132, 124, 125, 126, 136, 143 etc etc. All would sound complimenting and can be put into a drum rack or something.
I've done 7 bar loops as well...... But of course im from 7 mile conant gardens area, its a Detroit thang😉😉 RIP Baatin and Dilla im going in on the Mikro Mk3 all Feb.. (Birthday is Feb 2 as well)
Makes sense. 7 is number of c ompletion--END OF CIPHER: but like a scale the end leads to the beginning and sounds like there is resolution and also tension to keep going.
I’m loving the channel. It’s been very helpful. My 16 y/o daughter and I have just started using Serato Studio and we’re trying to figure out how to use techniques with odd number bars like this with that software. Help!
the work around is to create at least one scene with only 1 bar then when you're creating a song, it becomes an odd number if you add it before or after a scene with 2,4, 6, ect bars.. does that make sense?
I'm with you on that...if you a producer whether you sample or use daw's ....herbie hancock was a genius musician himself ...if you haven't heard of him ...check out his TH-cam material and interviews
Idk one of his samples. But I LOVE how j Dilla influenced Jon Bellions sound. Jon Bellion is my all time fav artist and he is HEAVILY influenced by J Dilla
The way Dilla sampled 10cc for workinonit is nothing short of genius.
