J Dilla Inspired Techniques
In this vid, we examine another technique from the legendary Jay Dilla where i notice in one of my favorite tracks he produced, uses a 7 bar loop. In addition this technique utilizes 7 chords in rotation for 4 cycles which fits perfectly in a loop of 7 bars.
This is demonstrated on my MPC 2000xl Once again this concept can be transferred to any hardware or software.
This is only one of many J Dilla techniques, but if you listen to his album called Fantasic Vol.2 , u will come across so many dope techniques just from that one album alone. The spirit of Dilla will continue to live on and shout out to Ma Dukes for creating such a legacy thru her son Dilla Dawg aka The King of Beats.

The way Dilla sampled 10cc for workinonit is nothing short of genius.
On the music theory end of this, its pretty cool stuff. You're working with polyrhythms. Using 7/4 time with the keys over 4/4 on the drums. Very nice. Lots of fun, and pretty unexplored in popular music. The first example that comes to mind is Street Lights by Kanye West off of 808s and Heartbreaks. The song is in 3/4 with a piano part playing 4/4 in the back
great points thanks for the feedback
By the way, i discovered you that day that i first commented on this video and after starting at your first dilla video i found myself hours later still watching your videos. very nice stuff. love your enthusiasm for the art
awesome!
Dilla could have sampled the Teletubbies theme song and that shit would've been fire lol.
I really liked his sample from Tarika Blue but I mean all of his work was dope.
Tight video. It's definitely forcing me to push my boundaries and try new things.
+jbaby007 thank u and i agree LOL
Ahmad Jamal
yes my dude
@@marselmusic No.
@@marselmusic Pete Rock. Dilla did produce Stakes is High which is sampled from Swahililand Ahmad Jamal (1974)
@@marselmusic "ahmad impress me"
"Get this Money" was the beat that made me wanna start learning how to make beats in 2000. It absolutely blew my mind, sounded out of this world space and futuristic. Still is nothing like it.
salute
Great bar loops for yall! Try this out: the first number stands for the bars in a loop, and the second stands for the amount of times you'll need to cycle them to fit on a 4/4 beat.
3x4 = 12 ; 5x4 = 20 ; 6x2 = 12 ; 7x4 = 28 ; 10x2 = 20 ; 11x4 = 44 .
3, 5 , 6 , 7 , 10 , 11 bar loops work fine for a 4/4 beat.
Repeat the loop until you hit a multiple of 4, and you'll have an interesting cycle.
thanks for sharing
My favorite artist Dilla has sampled is no doubt Stan Getz, he is the one of my favorite jazz artists ever
yes true legend
Verysickbeats can u name another beat with a 7 bar loop because I sure is hell cant ? Ha
Marvin Gaye. The way he flipped 'God Is Love' is awesome.
Mantronix. Love the siren.

7 bar loop?? thats crazy!
Great way to round off dilla month. Even if you arent looking to sound like dilla these techniques give you more tools to keep things fresh! Lovin it!
+Olly Powell yessir! thanks for the comment!!
Mind blown. I can't believe it took me this long to find these videos. Thanks for making this with such a positive approach.
It not being February anymore, but keep the Dilla series coming.
Joshua Jackson yup
Inspired me to bust out this 5 bar piano composition I wrote and stuffed away for a non-hip hop project.. these videos really just showcase what makes dolls great. Breaking the rules of hip hop. Period. Everything that makes his beats great is his constant flex on sampling and composition conventions. Great content, thanks!
my pleasure
Still bookmarked the videos...yu the king

a tribe called quest - electric relaxation - 3 bar loop
crazy stuff, i keep meaning to experiment with these kinda loops
+DanMorzeTheInspecta yep
+DanMorzeTheInspecta ...q-tip loves those odd number bar loops. I've heard him do 3, 5, 7, even 15-bar loops. I especially love when the hook is odd numbered, but then switches to even numbered for the verses. keeps you on your toes.
I felt at different bpms how different bars feel but there is also something to beats without the 4/4 time signature
love your vids man !
much thanks
Amazing, love it.
Thank you!
Wow! This is a really awesome technique! I will practice it, thank you!
my pleasure

Nice vid
in a moment remains me Mob Deep
Isley brothers footsteps in the dark on the Won't Do joint how he flipped the drums and the vocoder on the vocal sample then used vox chops without the vocoder, the samples on runnin by the pharcyde are super dope as well, idk the artist he sampled on that joint DILLA FOR INTERGALACTIC EMPEROR!!!!!!!!!!!
my fav artist he sampled is frank zappa, he took the samples from one of zappa's songs "dance contest", and i just love everything about zappa, his style, his great knowledge he had about music, his ideas, everything. (the song is called Mash btw.)
yep love that beat and zappa
great I appreciate so much what you do
my pleasure
You made this polyrhythm so easy to hear and understand

Singers Unlimited.
After watching your videos I learned that his Beats inspired me I tried to make the most messed up samples that have ofttimes and randomly put them together and then I go through and change the time signature and the swing to try to get them to match up. Polyrhythms my friends
salute
youre really right man
i learned this on my own while messing around ! didnt know it was a technique
Bill Evans, or when he sampled King Crimson for Microphone Master
Yes!
That was a king crimson sample?!🤯
One of my greatest feats ever was remaking Dilla's Little Brother beat. Dude was genius on Prince, Michael Jackson level with the talent.

I think i heard a Isley Brothers sample in a Dilla song but can't remember the name of the song, but in general the way he samples old Soul music and R and B those are my favorite Dilla songs.
you may be referring to So Far To Go from isley brother's sample of Dont Say Goodnight
Bye from Donuts also.
"Get this money" is one of my favorite Dilla beats.
salute
Slick! I got inspired to loop samples or percussion to a scale, like Aminor scale in notes ascending; - A,B,C,D,E,F,G...A. THe last A is like the C on the piano, just an octave higher. So 8 bar loop still. I figure this is easily done by transposing samples by semitones according to the scale. ;) Let me know if anyone wants to try this, Im allready on it so would love to hear others!
also
You can use a 6key scale where all keys are harmonic to make random triad chords. There would be many combinations such as: 123, 213, 132, 124, 125, 126, 136, 143 etc etc. All would sound complimenting and can be put into a drum rack or something.
thanks for sharing
Cool!
