    Dope video! For those wondering, what you're doing is playing 4 dotted eight notes in 6/8 which changes the meter from triple double (123 456 - three sets of two) to quadruple double (12 +3 45 +6 - four sets of two). The music theory term for this is called hemiola. So when you're in the 6/8 time, you're playing the quadruple double meter (4 dotted 8ths). When you switch to 4/4 you are *still* in quadruple double (1+ 2+ 3+ 4+) which is why it feels seamless to switch. The tempo just picks up in 4/4 because you're compressing the time since you have to make up a beat when you switch time signatures.

    "No one can do you like you. That's why Dilla was such an individual." Thank you for this video brotha, much love!

  • @dr.weeniehutjr
    @dr.weeniehutjr 8 ปีที่แล้ว +160

    The way I've always thought of it is that if you count out the triplets in 6/8, accenting every fourth triplet instead of the third creates the "new" 4/4 beat. As in, the triplets of 6/8 are the quarter notes in 4/4. This is probably one of my favorite rhythmic devices honestly, look into metric modulation if this kind of thing is interesting to you. Great video man!

      much thanks

    • @nmagain24
      @nmagain24 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You could think of it like that OR you can actually form the rythm not even off the drums but the accompanying rythms. Its always good to keep the pocket first and foremost. From there you will just hear so much. The pocket is like the gateway drug

    • @Max_Payn3
      @Max_Payn3 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If your into stuff like this, may I recommend something a bit different, a band called meshuggah. They are masters of manipulating rhythm and metric modulation, if you can get past the singing

    • @evmanbutts
      @evmanbutts 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As a guitarist, this is the standard practice for feeling a time signature switch. It's absolutely nuts, and the way Dilla used it in this sample grooves hard as hell

    • @low_effort_Q1
      @low_effort_Q1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I need an explanation. Wouldn't you get three groups of eighth triplets, making it a 9/8 beat rather than 4/4, no matter how you accent the beats?

      Eventhough keys change every bar in Giant Steps its plain old 4/4 time.
      As a mature of fact the whole album is in 4/4.
      The use of new harmonic material in Coltranes compositions and Coltranes extensive soloing makes this record so special among other things.

    really interesting! this also works for more traditional songwriting. i did this for years when i was doing soul music, i'd write in 6/8 because sometimes you can access more emotional melodies etc in 6/8 like "its a mans world" and then id convert them into more punch 4/4 with a more hiphop style drum beat like "i need a dollar". didnt know dilla also did that so this makes me feel quite good about my idea!! a good example is "you made us change" which i originally wrote for hannah williams in 6/8 and then changed it to 4/4 when recording the song for ephemerals. xx

    I cant tell you how much I enjoy watching your videos man. Especially these Dilla techniques.
    You break it down to where almost anyone could follow it and the technique in on point. The 6/8 to 4/4 is what always attracted my ear drums to Dilla even before I understood what he was doing.

    • @KBStickEm
      @KBStickEm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      So glad other people hear that it's just 4/4 half time when it's switched. When he's counting the 6's they're actually swung a little bit so it's kind of just forcing the 6. It's just 4/4 half time. Classic over thinking.. good stuff though.

    • @16GHunter
      @16GHunter 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Kraig Briggs that kinda is what 6/8 is though, a slow swung 4/4. 6/8 in this example is mostly indicated by the hihat patterns filling the space between the kick and snare. A lot of blues shuffle tracks are in 6/8, but still ~ feel ~ 4/4. I still think this is a helpful tip for flipping any samples similar to the examples he used.

    • @druiz607
      @druiz607 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol yeah I was trying to figure out what he was talking about. So just the hats, right? Because the beat is just normal for 4. 4.

    Yeah it counts like fast 6/4 but you can also count it slower as 4 beats and longer measures. Then it goes to double time just adding a snare

    • @UncleBenjs
      @UncleBenjs 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it doesn't. It's 6/8 the 8 being note value (quavers). 4/4 means for crotchet beats to a bar. First 4 being how many and second 4 being note value, 4 meaning crotchet.

  • @WrvrUgoThrUR
    @WrvrUgoThrUR 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very cool. One thing I’ve discovered since delving into sampling and beatmaking is that it’s sooooo easy to fall prey to the lazy P. Diddy style of sampling-basically, chop-less: no pitch or timeshifting-basically just overdubbing drums and maybe a new baseline to the original theme of the sample.
    The technique you show is the kind of stuff it takes creativity, skill and a minute to grasp. And if you chop it creatively, one would be hard-pressed to even recognize the original sample. It’s a whole new thing.
