For the first few years...but then the government started PAYING people to go around murdering people since most people were too chicken to leave their houses to take advantage of it once most buildings went ahead and but everything into storage the day before the Purge that would require a class 4 or higher weapons to break into which isn't legal even during The Purge. They could still do it, but they wouldn't be exempted from their actions after the Purge like they would for following the rules, so it would be largely pointless.

This movie works under the theory that all humans have the natural tendency to kill each other to survive, like its some primal instinct we all have and we're such feral creatures that all violence that occurs in society is because of this instinct. That's not true. Humans are social animals and naturally form bonds with each other and create communities. We don't all have this deep "aggression" inside of us waiting to be set loose. This movie fails so hard because the satire is just false. It's not based on anything. The entire aggression theme is just here for the sake of irony. On top of that the idea of a "purge" moronically unrealistic, even for a Michael Bay universe.

I think there is a lot of things to explore with the idea of a 12 hour all crimes are legal law. The problem is the film universe suggests there is only one crime people want to commit, "murder." The reason I have not killed anyone in my life isn't because I would go to jail, it's because I don't want to murder people (and I think most people would agree). But the reason I have never robbed a bank is 100% because I'm scared of jail. There are so many things I would do during the purge (unless I am too scared to go outside) and murder would not make the top 100 list.
Yeah, if I couldn't go to jail there would many different crimes on my bucket list but murdering someone is not one of them. If they made this movie about a small group of people trying to rob a bank during the purge there could probably be a lot of stuff to make the film on. They would need to be very careful as well with how the law is worded, since they supposedly made it so you can't go after high level politicians, but it is also unlawful to change laws without the proper protocols, unless all crime is legal in which case someone could easily make claims of changes to the government itself. Pride Many people would probably just go about doing taboo sexual things, like sex in public. Lust Many people will loot and steal, including digitally and using white collar crime to take the rights to property. Greed Some people will consume illegal drugs, or eat animals that are endangered that they normally can not have. Gluttony Some people will just stay at home and do nothing, the wealthier ones will stay at home in their panic room with the bathroom and wait out the day. Sloth A small portion of the population: will take advantage of the fact that they can get away with violent crime, with complete disregard to the future social consequences and will act on it. Wrath. Envy sort of fits into most of these as the people with envy will be driven to take many of these actions.

I don't think the Purge was meant to be taken too literally, as it's more of an exploration into the darkness within humanity itself and how society continues to pass laws that fuck over the little guy, as we see in the purge sequels. But in reality, this purge thing would never happen to begin with. It's not practical. For instance. In the movie, they explain that all police and fire departments are shut down during the purge, and citizens are only allowed to use class 4 weapons and under during the whole thing. The only problem is how do you enforce that though? If the police are down during the purge, then there's nothing stopping me from using fucking bombs and shit to blow up entire cities and buildings if I wanted to. Sure, it's still illegal to use bombs during the purge, by the film's logic. However, if I'm an insane sociopath like the Joker, then what do I care? I'll just wait until the purge, and then burn the entire city to the ground because nobody would be there to stop me. That alone would undo any sort of alleged benefit the purge offers society. Not to mention if your a terrorist, then it just makes America an open target because if there's no police or law enforcement to stop you, then what's stopping you from blowing up the white house or any other heavily populated areas within the US? I mean if im a terrorist leader, then that's when I would strike because that's when America's defenses would be down. the reality is the purge is bullshit. Not even a fascist third world country led by an insane dictator would implement a law like that. But to your point though, yeah I am surprised that we don't see other crimes being committed during these purge movies; apart from murder. I mean it would make more sense to just buy body armor and buy a shit load of guns, so you could just loot houses, stores and shit. That would seem more logical if you ask me. Wouldnt it also be ok to forcefully rewrite the entire law during the purge? Rhys Wakefield, (the actor playing the polite leader of the gang chasing the homeless guy) was cast just one day before filming began. He was cast after the director had gone through many casting sessions for the character and all the other actors had gone overboard with it. Wakefield walked in and played the whole audition cool, with an unsettling smile on his face. The director liked this and Wakefield was cast immediately.

I dislike the underlying message at the end, where the woman spares the neighbors who tried to kill her children. This idea that all violence, whether against good people or evil people, is equally bad. It's a false equivalency and too extreme a stance for the real world. Violence is difficult, but sometimes it's necessary and sometimes there are people too evil or dangerous to be shown any mercy.

They could still do it, but they wouldn't be exempted from their actions after the Purge like they would for following the rules, so it would be largely pointless.

This movie works under the theory that all humans have the natural tendency to kill each other to survive, like its some primal instinct we all have and we're such feral creatures that all violence that occurs in society is because of this instinct. That's not true. Humans are social animals and naturally form bonds with each other and create communities. We don't all have this deep "aggression" inside of us waiting to be set loose. This movie fails so hard because the satire is just false. It's not based on anything. The entire aggression theme is just here for the sake of irony. On top of that the idea of a "purge" moronically unrealistic, even for a Michael Bay universe.
Ya, if we truly did have that killer instinct I doubt we would've lasted as long as we did. Considering almost every animal on this planet could kick our asses, I'm pretty sure it's more likely our instinct would be to avoid killing each other so callously.

I think there is a lot of things to explore with the idea of a 12 hour all crimes are legal law. The problem is the film universe suggests there is only one crime people want to commit, "murder."
The reason I have not killed anyone in my life isn't because I would go to jail, it's because I don't want to murder people (and I think most people would agree).
But the reason I have never robbed a bank is 100% because I'm scared of jail. There are so many things I would do during the purge (unless I am too scared to go outside) and murder would not make the top 100 list.
Yeah, if I couldn't go to jail there would many different crimes on my bucket list but murdering someone is not one of them. If they made this movie about a small group of people trying to rob a bank during the purge there could probably be a lot of stuff to make the film on. But nope, cucks stuck in a house is much more entertaining...

I don't think the Purge was meant to be taken too literally, as it's more of an exploration into the darkness within humanity itself and how society continues to pass laws that fuck over the little guy, as we see in the purge sequels.
But in reality, this purge thing would never happen to begin with. It's not practical. For instance. In the movie, they explain that all police and fire departments are shut down during the purge, and citizens are only allowed to use class 4 weapons and under during the whole thing. The only problem is how do you enforce that though?
If the police are down during the purge, then there's nothing stopping me from using fucking bombs and shit to blow up entire cities and buildings if I wanted to. Sure, it's still illegal to use bombs during the purge, by the film's logic. However, if I'm an insane sociopath like the Joker, then what do I care? I'll just wait until the purge, and then burn the entire city to the ground because nobody would be there to stop me. That alone would undo any sort of alleged benefit the purge offers society. Not to mention if your a terrorist, then it just makes America an open target because if there's no police or law enforcement to stop you, then what's stopping you from blowing up the white house or any other heavily populated areas within the US? I mean if im a terrorist leader, then that's when I would strike because that's when America's defenses would be down.

I dislike the underlying message at the end, where the woman spares the neighbors who tried to kill her children. This idea that all violence, whether against good people or evil people, is equally bad. It's a false equivalency and too extreme a stance for the real world. 9) and gambling
10) and illegal sports being done in main arenas
If you look closely at one of the purge recordings you can see the date 3-22-2017 meaning the purge was supposed to have happened by now

I don't think he will because they pretty much have the same message as this one. The only thing that was somewhat interesting was the second movie taking place in lower income environment, and even then it's still unrealistic as hell and just "meh" at the most.
Judging by the first film it's pretty safe to say that all the other movies would be the same with minor differences in between them.

It couldn't get any dumber when the PEOPLE OF THE MOVIE acknowledge how terrible and over all stupid the idea of the Purge is (was in the movie's term).

Lets be totally honest. If crime was legal for one night, assault and murder would not be the main crimes. Don't lie. You would either rob the nearest electronics/video games outlet, or you would live out your most perverted sexual fantasies. You CANNOT convince me there wouldn't be hoards of sexual deviants running around nude, raping people and having public orgies and digging up corpses and raiding orphanages. Its a bit disconcerting that whoever made this movie immediately defaults to murder and assault. Lust and greed are things that EVERYONE indulges in.

Is it really disconcerting? You're expecting high art from a company that just wants to sell something safe to a summer movie audience. I recommend reading up on the Directors original intentions for the story, they're much more interesting than the actual movies.
