Got to say, those engine bays are spotlessly clean. Some of them look like they've just rolled out of the factory. Amazing stuff, a testament to how much time and effort all these vehicles get from the Workshop team.

When I was with the AUST 1ARMD REGT at Puckapunyal the leopards were painted in solid green (basically olive drab) but when on exercise we would pain them and the M113s with mud from the local area to different patterns to use local colour to help hide them. It worked well and as an example when we had US forces over you could spot them in the bush much easier than the Aussies wearing the local issue DPCUs this was mainly because the US cam was more a woodland colouring where the Aussie DPCUs were more a brown tan and light green which with the dry climate was better for a bit of an idea as to how much the US DPCUs would stand out imagine if in the gulf wars nothing was repainted or DPCUs were still the ones worn in europe while in Saudi Arabia.

Indeed much better to use local camo-(organic)colors ! That's for eye-vision. But camo for infra, radar and ultra effects nowadays are important against enemy-devices !

Could you imagine running around Afghanistan in urban combat in bright green, black and brown woodland camouflage. You might as well paint a red X on your back ❌

Exactly what the Germans did in Operation Barbarossa. It helped to break up that Panzer Gray. It wouldnt be until early '43 that they would switch to a dark-yellow base. Panzers often came from the factory with some greens and such. The units themselves could pick the paint scheme they wanted for the terrain they were in.

That bevel gearbox is the kind of thing I'd imagine when I hear the phrase "the Tiger was over-engineered and complicated", but wave off as being a ridiculous idea. Apparently, it does indeed use a machined set of gears in its own separate gearbox instead of, like, a fan belt or electric motor. Amazing look at the working parts of this machine.

I have a little hint for the DSTL guy though: If you're afraid the people working in the nice, warm, clean(ish) factory are going to kill you, how do you imagine the soldiers in the field are going to maintain your overcomplicated paint scheme?

Black and Green worked for BAOR for 30 years, Tan worked for Desert. Batus was Tan and Green. Applying paint on new/damaged items was easy, even a child could paint those schemes. Now you expect a Soldier in the Field to paint new parts Digital? How many paints does that require? It just expands the Logistics chain, with more paint, again, so someone, somewhere can say, "I did that" . If it aint broke...Dont fix it.......PS, I see there was nothing wrong with DPM, it worked , so why Digital on Cammo?

There muse be so many 10mm sockets rolling around in the belly of that Tiger. No wonder it makes so much noise!
Also, camo is situational. You'd think silver would be easily found, but I can never figure out which car is mine with others around. And, of course, nobody sees it on the road because it's so generic and is road-coloured from certain angles.
A bright red motorbike sticks out everywhere. Good for finding it in a car park, bad for avoiding speeding tickets. Especially when they hear you coming from miles away.

A question if you please: On viewing the Tigers engine area I see a great deal of rust/corrosion in the cooling manifold. Having painted a lot of tanks in the old school black and green used in the cold war I'd have to say the digi colour scheme wouldn't be practical to do, you'd need a hell of a lot of stencils and it would take a huge amount of time per tank in comparison to black and green or a single colour green.

The UK has an enormous surplus of fine arts graduates. Get them to do it. Just don't tell them what the 'heavy industrial tractors' they're painting are really used for. The only problem is that if we end up with tanks painted in Pride colours it might end up motivating the enemy.

Damn those fan assemblies are so complex, I know we are talking about a german heavy tank but still..

Complex? It's actually a pretty simple and reliable solution to drive large heavy radiator fans. Very odd for a German vehicle.

That cooling had to be bulletproof. So they made it bulletproof.

Just do what the US has been doing for decades, paint everything desert sand since that is scheme that will mostly likely work in the next conflict. the majority of US vehicles are in a desert paint. camo is found on very old equipment that is only used in training.

Darn, I thought this would be some kind of quiz where you had to guess what tank they were talking about

I find much of that silly tat in the gift shop a bit distasteful. A "Tiger tank top" !? Tiger tank beer!!?

$$$$ or ££££ or €€€€ is good for the bank balance or are you offering to stump up a hefty tithing on the regular basis to keep the museum open and financial?

Camo has been studied countless times. Its not the color or the pattern. The human eye is analog, it detects motion. These days they also have to do something with the thermal signature. Finally, it should be pretty simple, how many manhours to paint single color green, vs manhours to paint digital nonsense?

The right decals wouldn't be that time intensive, but they would be stripped off by the next sand storm or bleach under intense sunlight.
