I have been playing on a Wyvern as my main tuba for nearly 6 years now, and I honestly hope to never have to replace it. It has been the perfect "one size fits all" tuba I needed as a college student.
I have to agree with my esteem colleagues at Wessex… I switched from my Conn 2J CC which I have been playing since 1978 over to the Wessex Wyvern… couldn’t be happier! It is an absolute joy to play! Beautiful tone, wonderful response over the entire range of the horn, amazingly easy to blow… the other three CC models sound wonderful and are no doubt equal in their own ways, BUT I still highly recommend the Wyvern model as my absolute favorite!
I’d love to see you guys make a BBb version of the Mahler. I think Miraphone has one called the 187 which is 5 valve version of the 186. The 187 is hard to find and not cheap. I’d love to have a 5v BBb tuba based off the classic German design for all around playing.
Based on previous videos you've done, I think my favorite CC is your Chicago Presence, but in this comparison I liked the Mahler best 🤷♂️. I think I like bells with a bit less flare.
Excellent video, thank you for the CC comparisons, please can you do the same for the Bb ones, and also the Eb ones. I enjoyed the f tuba comparisons thank you very much
My preference lies with the Wyvern. It has a clear, yet still rich sound, prefect for solo pieces. The Anton is a bit "thick", and feels muffled, likely very good for an orchestra where you want a deep, warm sound. Not so great for fast and clear passages The Mahler is also a good one, but has a sort of "nasal" sound, it's very clear, but not as rich of a sound. A great pick fast passages and blending with the other low brass The Chicago-York was probably my least favorite, not because of any flaw, but it's didn't excel at any particular point. It has a rich sound, but not very warm, it's clear, but not very clear and especially in faster passages loses some of it's clarity. It's an allround, likely perfect for an orchestra as well Disclaimer: Not a professional, but studying music and playing tuba
Thanks so much for taking the time to leave so much feedback! We really appreciate the kind words, and how detailed you were with your interpretations :)

We do love the Wyvern, and love that you’re so happy with yours!
Need more videos of the Anton. Sounds wonderful.
Keep your eyes on this space 😍👀
Definitely prefer the rotary tubas. Lots of color to the sound! The Anton to me is the ideal sound I look for in an orchestra contrabass tuba in CC.
Two thumbs up for the Anton. I think the sound was more in your face and crisper.
Loved getting to read your thoughts on this, thank you for taking the time to watch, listen and leave your feedback!

There may or may not be something in the works for the Mahler, coming up very soon 👀👀👀
@@WessexTubasOfficial Awesome!!!!

Like the York, that being said I always preferred the timbre of the BB tubas and their darker sound…
There is something really special about a darker sounding Tubas 😍 We have a BB Tuba Comparison Video in the works!
@@WessexTubasOfficial Ooo. I'm very interested to hear the difference between the Prokofiev and Leviathan, since they sort of share a main bugle.
Now play all four in an orchestra and record the same passage on each from the audience.
That would be incredible… but highly unlikely, unless you’re offering to fund it 😂?
they sound good and the same
Thanks for leaving your feedback :)
for me i prefer the mahler
This video would be even more useful if it were done using a Snedecor etude.
Wyvern the best tuba
