We are so excited to be sharing today's video with you! In today's video, Will Druiett offers a demonstration of all 3 tubas!
In this quick review, Will and Jonathan offer their opinion on these tubas before will provides us with three performances of the same piece on the Wessex British F, Vienna and Linz Tubas. We even took it one step further to provide you with back-to-back phrases at the end of the video, so you are able to really dive in and compare the different tones that these tubas are able to achieve.
The performances were recorded using an Aston Spirit Microphone, and a Scarlett Focusrite interface, to ensure we were able to capture the true tones of all tubas.
We've got more review videos (and comparisons!) lined up for future releases, but are always curious to know what people want to see next. these tubas all sound amazing! in my opinion, the Vienna tuba has excellent clarity without becoming very bright and 'edgy'. It still has good depth and warmth to its sound without getting tubby or muddy which also makes it sound a bit more agile.
The Linz tuba sound a bit 'punchier' to me, a bit deeper, warmer and more powerful, but not a giant leap from the Vienna tuba.
The British F tuba on the other hand to me sounds like pure power, carrying potential, and that deep, warm, yet focused British sound.

Define 'British sound'? Referring to the saxhorn sound (invented in Belgium), referring to Besson, who was French?

All three sounded good in the upper register test, with the Vienna and British F tubas possessing a more 'sweet' sound. In the low register test, the Linz was the most 'open' sounding on the very lowest notes. However, both the Vienna and British F were competitive, and were somewhat comparable to each other. When you have a tuba player as good as Will, they're all bound to sound quite good. I would have liked an extreme high register test - something like the "Rockoczy March" from Berlioz, or that nasty high register excerpt from "Romeo & Juliet" (Berlioz as well).

This is great feedback to read Barry, thank you so much for taking the time to share it! Those are great suggestions for some extreme high register play testing, we will note these for future videos :) Thank you!

I listened to the comparison through a pair of Klipsch The Fives Speakers with a Klipsch 12 ‘’ Subwoofer. It sounded like it was live. I own the Linz F tuba so I know what it sounds like live. The Vienna F tuba sounded the Brightest of the three tubas, very articulate. The Linz sounded a little darker and richer than the Vienna, but also very articulate. The British F Tuba sounded much, much darker. More like a double bass or contra bass tuba. The notes were not as articulate as the Vienna and the Linz. The British F tuba clearly takes less air for volume. I believe the Vienna and the Linz sound better for solo work. The British F tuba would clearly give more foundation to a band or orchestra. It definitely sounds like a Bass Euphonium. The Lower range on the Vienna and the Linz tubas sounded pretty much identical. I know the first and second valve triggers on the Vienna would be great for tuning help. My personal preference is the Linz. It doesn’t need tuning slide for me. Now that I’m learning to play it. It sounded terrible when I received it, I thought, but, it was the player that was terrible Not the Linz. I love my Linz F Tuba. I had played the BBb tuba for about forty years. I had wanted an F tuba for a long time and Wessex made it affordable. Thanks Wessex! Keep up the great work.😃

I’m mostly flabbergasted at the incredible tone and timbre of each of the F tubas! Naturally a lot of that is Will - BUT as previously stated, the British F has a sound worthy of anchoring a brass section in a larger ensemble, band or orchestra whereas the other two have a lighter, sweeter tone quite suitable for solo or small ensemble work… I certainly can’t pick a favorite - so I’ll just say once again, Kudos! Tremendous!!!

Each tuba has its own unique sound , all are very pleasing to the ears though to me IMO the rotary instruments have a very singing sound and quality, whereas the English version F sounds darker and more muffled of a sound unfortunately less appealing to me compared to the other two instruments .

Very muffled, it is as if the valves cannot follow the tempo. Not muffled in the lower register though, there, every note has a hard attack.

Absolutely agree with the singing sound and quality of the rotary instruments!

I liked the Linz best in the low register, and it was a tie with the Vienna and Linz in the upper register. For my taste, the British F seemed a bit spready and unfocused, almost blatty. Also, was it flat, compared to the other 2? Maybe just less upper harmonics to the sound. 🤷‍♂️
