    Thanks for taking the time to make this! I didn't know about the raw one, that's pretty interesting. The others I seldom use other than the intervalometer, which is awesome with tons of features. I agree that Pentax succeeds at offering these high end features in lower end bodies, while other manufacturers seem to like to intentionally remove features from lower end models for marketing purposes. Best bang for your buck I think.

    • @KobieMC
      @KobieMC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is unfortunate that the other manufacturers use that business model. When beginners buy their first camera, they search TH-cam etc and see all these photographers using cameras from the same manufacturer but they have features the entry level camera just doesn't have. Then the newcomer gets upset because they feal they lack the ability. It's just a sad state. Pentax is definitely the best bang for buck and with the features across the whole lineup, they really are the only ones make cameras that will grow with you as your skills develop. It's just too bad that they don't market/advertise anymore 🙁

    I often use the save as RAW feature - pretty much any session I shoot jpeg only and happen to either capture an image I think I want to save in the best possible quality, or when I encounter really tough lighting conditions and know I'll need the dynamic range later.
    The composition correction feature is so useful when you get tired of trying to get your tripod perfectly level and just can't, but it's even more useful when you forgot your tripod and you're placing the camera on a nearly flat surface (like a wall) and you just want to get that perfect horizon line.
    But for me, the number one thing that never ceases to amaze me when I compare Pentax to other brands I use, are the menus and controls. They're so intuitive and accessible and they really appeal to my software engineer's mind. The value of this simply cannot be overstated - this really matters in the field, and you feel the benefit every time you use the camera.

      @@eddyg1794 In main menu > Playback option > Save Raw Data. It's usually the +/- (exposure compensation) button that saves the jpeg to Raw. The camera has to be set in a specific way though.
      Drive mode>Single Shot and only while the image preview is showing can you save the jpeg to RAW format since the buffer is still open. If the preview goes away, the buffer is now closed.

    Thanks fo the tips Kobie. I've been a pentax shooter since the Spotmatic and was not aware of these fetures.
    My favorite Pentax feature (since the PZ series at least) has been flash compensation in the camera body. This allows you to dial in compensation with any TTL flash, even inexpensive ones. Unlike Canikon which make you buy a high -end flash unit to get this feature.

    Something ver very useful i miss is Catch-In Focus, it's so cool to be honest. You set your lens focus on a known point, and when your subject hits teh focus, the picture snaps automatically.
    I find it a priceless aid in macro photography, as well as when you are trying to catch unpredictable subjects like birds.

    • @KobieMC
      @KobieMC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did a separate video on how to use catch in focus. I've seen a couple of reviews mention it, but never composition adjustment or saving a jpeg to raw. I use catch in focus all the time with my manual lenses 🙂

    • @listerdave1240
      @listerdave1240 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems that it works only with manual focus lenses, or ones that can be switched to manual focus on the lens body. I have often used it with such lenses but I have never managed to get it to work with autofocus lenses that don't have the auto/manual switch.

    • @KobieMC
      @KobieMC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What you stated is how it's intended to be used. Switchable AF/MF lenses and most 100% manual lenses. There are some manual lenses that won't work since they don't act as a ground for the lens mount. Those you would need to short a pin with foil. I've never bothered doing it though. I just use an AF/MF switchable lens.

    Cool video. For reference the Q7 let's you get up to 999 interval shots and K1 lets you get up to 2000. Yes, a very handy feature having it built in! I recall hearing about the jpeg to raw feature and have tried it in the past. Unfortunately I found it kind of disappointing in practice because the resulting files are made into DNGs *from* the jpgs, an already data-stripped form. Sure, it gives you a DNG, but it doesn't make it from any raw data in the buffer, so it ends up kind of a quirky feature. That said, I love all the quirks to explore. Like you say, Pentax cameras do have a LOT.

  • @eddyg1794

    This is pure gold. I thought of a great use for the composition adjustment. Wouldn't it be perfect for macro shots! If you can't quite get the subject in focus or you have your camera on a tripod and you don't want to move everything to get the image where you want it....boom...use this feature!

  • @SummersSnaps
    @SummersSnaps 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You should probably also mention about the Jpg>RAW thing, it does have limitations. It's only usable on the LAST Jpg image taken, that's the one that has the buffer info still. So if you took 5 jpg shots in single drive mode and then went into your Playback review and went through images 1-5, only the 5th shot and final shot would five the +/- ev comp button with an option for generating a RAW file in addition to the Jpg.
    Furthermore you lose that Jpg>RAW ability if you powered down the device and booted back up (buffer info lost).
    But yes it's a nice feature to have.
    Some of the features I like are things like Fine Adjustments, I believe not all cameras have this (*cough Canon cough*), and in just general the extremely highly customisable button mapping option. Green Button is also unique to Pentax I believe as well as AF confirmation with manual focus glass. I have heard of manual focus glass junkies buying Pentax cameras just for that option!

    Kobie, very helpful videos. I wanted to ask if your changing from RAW to JPG for this video ... Can you just change those on the fly like that, or must you not reformat the card for those changes to take effect?

    • @KobieMC
      @KobieMC  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don't need to format the card. What it's doing when you save the jpeg as a raw, is, it takes a copy of the raw image which is still held in the buffer and places it on the card as a "new" raw copy of the image that was originally saved as a jpeg. It's not really a switch on the fly sort of thing (it requires you to stop for a minute to hit the button to tell the camera to save the image as a raw copy). What you could always do, is go in the card menu and switch from raw to jpeg, or jpeg to raw. Or, set up the "RAW/FX" button to swap between jpeg and raw.

    hi, i know this is an older, but i have a pentax K-5, and it does weird things when i'm trying to take photos, i am very new to pentax, and to photography in general, i cant find anything online with a K-5 doing what mine is doing (so far) there isnt a whole lot of videos about it because it's like 11 years old now. sometimes when i'm shooting, it will randomly not take a photo, but it makes sounds like the mirror is cycling up and down rapidly and it wont focus either, also, when i hit a button or wheel it will do the same thing, until i point the camera at random and manually adjust the zoom until it finally auto focuses again, ive looked up mirror slap, and other issues, but this doesnt sound like that, so i dunno what it is. :( awesome videos btw, i had no idea pentax did this, the reason i got a pentax k-5 was because i'm ..poor basically, you can get a K-5 for like 150$, and then i got a DA 55-300mm lens for i think 120$ off amazon used, there is probably similarly aged cameras of other brands but not usually weather sealed, so i got the k-5 and it takes beautiful photos (when i manage not to screw everything up)

    • @KobieMC
      @KobieMC  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you happen to have it in mirror lock up mode? You can tell by noticing the viewfinder going black when trying to take a photo. Another thing to check is if you have the setting "focus priority" set in the menu. This will only allow the camera to fire once it confirms focus. Is the battery a Pentax battery or is it 3rd party? That can also make a difference on how the camera behaves (I had a similar issue with 3rd party batteries on my K-3, it would randomly fire at full speed continuously until I turned the camera off. Switched batteries and it was back to normal).

    Thanks for these tips, as the RAW data is recovered from buffer memory I wonder how many you can recover after the event but very useful. With the K1 you can have up to 2000 interval and composite shots - I was at a tutorial on multi exposure and the smug (up to that point) Canikon brigade’s mouths literally dropped open when this was mentioned! As far as I'm aware, it's only Pentax who always put an infra-red sensor on the rear of their cameras as well as the front. Obviously the one on the front is there to enable wireless triggering of selfies. But, for me, the one on the back is far more useful. For tripod work, it's great to be able to instantly take a picture without any risk of moving the camera. And, for wildlife photography, this immediate trigger works over substantial distances, allowing easy separation between the photographer and the subject.
    Secondly, when deciding whether to buy a K3 or a K3 ii, I knew I'd miss the K3's inbuilt flash and couldn't see the value in the K3 ii's inbuilt GPS. As it turned out, the lack of flash was easily solved with a small, second-hand Pentax-compatible flashgun. And having GPS co-ordinates embedded in every picture's EXIF data has turned out to be very powerful, especially as I am now using digiKam for my image library manager. Not only is the digiKam software very intuitive and entirely free, it can also show the shooting locations of all my images on various maps, including Google.

    • @KobieMC
      @KobieMC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I doubt it. The sensor doesn't move enough to warp or severely alter the optics of the image. It would be good for a situation where you're shooting with a very thin depth of field and the focus/recompose technique may throw the focus off. Now you can keep the camera where it is and move the sensor instead.

    • @tkimaginestudio
      @tkimaginestudio 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since the K-3 II that's being done in the form of Pixel Shift

    • @KobieMC
      @KobieMC  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pixel shift is not nearly the same as composition adjustment. Pixel shift moves the sensor 4 times by one pixel when you take the photo to extract as much color detail as possible. Composition adjustment allows you to move/angle the sensor which will change the composition for tuning. You can rotate the sensor and/or angle it which will shift the location of the subject within the frame. I'm pretty sure the K3 II, K-70, KP and K-1/II all have composition adjustment and pixel shift. 2 separate features.

    • @Flashbang_Photo
      @Flashbang_Photo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KobieMC Yes, but they won't enhace a single picture as far as pixel shift will do. You won't get an ultrawide shot by exposing the sensor to the lens dark areas, at best you would get a lot of vignetting, distortion and chromatic aberrations.

    Good idea for a video! However, we both know that you can't reach 1K shots on the interval setting. Not even in theory because D-Li109 battery will last for about 400 shots max. This is, unfortunately, a rather low number and one of the major drawbacks of this specific camera & battery type. For video, it's even worse.

      I know. Same with extended time lapses. Pentax needs batteries that are more dense.

      @@KobieMC when it's cold outside or if you shoot the Milky way (or both at the same time), the battery life gets critically low very fast. Because there is no battery grip available for this type of camera some smart astrophotographers have found a workaround: they insert a dummy-battery and connect it with an external power bank. Problem solved!

      That's a genius workaround!
