Morris Day and the Time was a protege band of Prince's. They all grew up together in Minneapolis. Morris (who started as a drummer) and Prince went to high school together. When Prince started to blow up, he created The Time and moved Morris to the front man spot. You'll get to see them all in action in the movie "Purple Rain," which was a world-wide phenomenon in the 80's. Check it out and enjoy!
Bit more than a portage band as Prince wrote all the first three albums and most of the fourth. Prime and the Revolution pretty much recorded the first three too, Morris using Prince's vocal take as a guide track. I think Jesse and Jellybean did some recording. What's strange is The Time are an incredibly talented bunch of Musicians in their own right, the Album they recorded as The Original 7ven was all their own work and its brilliant.
The first time I heard "Uptown funk" by Bruno Mars, I went "That sounds like a Time song and he sings it like Morris Day!" The dancing, the line of "I gotto kiss myself, I'm so pretty." was straight out of the The Time's lexicon.
The first time I heard Uptown funk I said, I did not know Morris Day did a new song. Then I found out the facts. So I say, hey Bruno, "The Time" called, they want their synthesizers back.
My kids and I saw this on VH1, I jumped up IMMEDIATELY and started doing The Bird, they rolllllled their eyes at me, I tried to get them up dancing with me, they refused, I said "that's alright, this dance ain't for everybody!" 🤣🤣🤣
It was also a combination of Jimmy Jam and Terry Parker. Those guys spread out the Prince-style to Sheila E, Morris Day, Vanity and even Janet Jackson. They had a good thing going for a long time.
@@lashlarue59 No, the first 3 Time albums were Morris Day on drums and Prince on everything thing else. Sheila E and Vanity was all Prince in the studio. In each case, Prince wrote and performed everything in the studio. He made the albums and then removed his lead vocals only. Those background vocals including the ones when Morris yells band are all Prince's vocals. He then had Morris, Sheila E. And Vanity sing his lead note for note as close as they could get to his lead tracking vocals. They were well rehearsed because Prince rehearsed and drilled them. Prince approved the mirror bit because Jerome did it in practice and cracked Prince up. However by this album that was featured in the movie Purple Rain, Prince had fired Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis when they missed a concert due to being stuck in a snow storm in Atlanta where they were secretly beginning their producing career working with The SOS Band. They weren't even members of The Time on Jungle Love. Getting fired was the best thing for them as they went on to become super producers Janet Jackson and many others and won Grammys. They were a Prince protege band only but clearly had to talent to be much more if he had let them.

@@nanyabyznessOG Yep, correct...they had been in Atlanta producing for the SOS Band (who became their 1st production work...after they were fired). They could not make it back in time to open for Prince in concert. Firing was a blessing...cause they produced hit albums for SOS Band. Then, they produced for their original lead singer (Alexander O'Neal)...for his solo hit albums. When the band The Time was being formed, Alex was going to be their singer...they already had a drummer...so Prince was trying to fit Morris into the group. Alex asked how much they were going to be paid. Prince pulled Jimmy/Terry to the side and said Alex had to go. So, it was cool to see Jimmy/Terry produce Alex (after their firing). My favorite part of this video, is when Jerome comes out with the mirror for Morris to check himself out, then they dance in tandem. And at the end, they do their 2-finger "hand slap".
@@BayAreaSon By 1981, Prince had built The Time out of an existing Minneapolis funk/R&B unit, Flyte Tyme, which featured Cynthia Johnson on lead vocals and sax, Anton (Tony) Johnson on guitar, David Eiland on saxophone, Jellybean Johnson on drums, Jimmy Jam and Monte Moir on keyboards, and Terry Lewis on bass. I've always loved this song and group. This is from the Prince movie, Purple Rain I believe.....❤❤❤❤❤. I think they had another big hit called The Bird ????

Prince and The Time are inseparable - they had many big tours in the early 80s. This clip is from "Purple Rain" and was performed at the club Prince and The Time started at in Minneapolis. I think it's called First Avenue.
As mentioned by many below, The Time was a side project of Prince’s. The Time were in “Purple Rain” and the sequel “Graffiti Bridge”. This song and “The Bird” are from The Time’s 3rd album “Ice Cream Castles”. The Time recorded both songs and performed them in the movie. ALL other songs on The Time’s first 3 albums are Morris Day on lead vocals and Prince playing all the instruments and doing backing vocals. All three albums were produced by Prince and he wrote all the songs. The same was done with other side projects - Vanity 6, Apollonia 6, The Family.
Back in the 90s I was watching an episode of MST3K that featured a Hercules movie. In the middle of a scene with some dancing girls, Tom Servo said, “Jessie. Now Jerome.” LMAO. One of my favorite 80s groups.
This is a song from back in '84, funny that you mentioned 'Prince', he wrote this under the pseudonym of 'Jamie Starr', it was featured in Prince's film 'Purple Rain'.
I was a teenager in San Francisco in 1981/82 and saw Morris Day and the Time as the opening act for Prince at the early part of their careers at the Civic Auditorium. The concert hall held about 7,500 people. Most people sat in the balcony seats that night so my friends and I walked right onto the auditorium floor and watched the show 10 feet from the stage. I’ll always remember that concert.
15 year old me was obsessed with Prince, the Purple Rain movie and soundtrack. I actually listened to the soundtrack on cassette using my walkman on a family vacation cross country - when one side ended I ejected it, turned it around and listened to the other side....for DAYS. When Prince died some movie theaters where I live showed the original movie and I was so glad I went.
This is from the movie Purple Rain. Morris Day and Prince met in high school. Morris was the drummer of the first band Prince put together. The next song from The Time: THE BIRD or COOL
Morris Day was in Prince's high school funk rock band as drummer later on. Before that, he was in the RIVAL high school funk rock band. So that part of the movie was based on their actual high school rivalry. Morris Day was for awhile a stagehand/backstage assistant and helped craft the song "Partyup" which was on Prince's third studio album. Prince offered to pay him some money for the song or help him start a new band. Morris chose Prince helping him get a band going and thus was born The Time. Originally, Alexander O'Neal was going to be the singer but was asking for too much money (and he had a drug problem). Prince talked Morris Day into taking the lead vocal spot and giving up the drum spot and he was right. The thing with Alexander being a dodged bullet became a bit of a joke when Prince would use various pen names to write for other musicians, one of which was Alexander Nevermind. As others have said, Prince owned The Time and crafted most of their material for them - at least until their revival in the 2000s as "The Original 7ven." Morris Day is still releasing his own music today. For this Christmas, be sure to check out his song "Cooler Than Santa Claus."
Saw Morris Day and the Time at an outdoor music festival in Minneapolis, MN in 1999, later that night Prince played. Was an absolute amazing weekend experience!
I never will forget seeing Morris day and the time & Tone Loc in the small town of foreman Arkansas at the local football field. It was the best concert I ever went to. Despite being in the middle of summer and very humid. Morris still looked classy with his suit on.
Prince conceived the Time as an outlet for the material he wrote earlier in his career, allowing him to experiment with other styles. He sourced some members of the group from the local Minneapolis funk band Flyte Time
I was working a nightclub in Mobile, and this guy came and up gave me an i.d. that said Morris Day. Thought it was a joke, I look up and is him. He just smiled and laughed with me. He stayed for a few hrs. He was nice to everyone, took pictures and did autographs. Great guy
Prince was always finding hidden gems to promote as proteges. This band was in the movie Purple Rain but Prince made sure they were brought into the pop arena because there was so much talent in the band - Morris Day, Jelly Bean Johnson, Jerome Benton, Jesse Johnson, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis went on to become huge producers and produced Janet Jackson's CONTROL album. This is from the mid-80's and you need to react the the movie PURPLE RAIN at some point.
Absolutely Love Morris Day & the Time Great Appearance in the Wonderful Prince Movie Purple Rain Another Must Song by them is “The Bird” You Will Absolutely Love It
One of the coolest concerts I've ever seen. Morris Day & The Time opened for The Gap Band, Cool & The Gang and headlining was The Isley Brothers. Damn!
The Time was straight funk. Morris Day was the Lead vocalist Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were part of the band along with Monte Moir on Keyboard and Jellybean Johnson on Drums and Jesse Johnson on Guitar Yes
She recorded here in Minneapolis at Flyte Time studios before they moved to LA. Jellybean still plays guitar here regularly. I see him often.@@doloresbriseno2567

One of Prince's, this was from Purple Rain. BTW, they played in an outdoor concert in florida, my sister and I got on stage with other ladies and it was 1984 all over again! Great show! They even had Jerome bring out the mirror! (Only us old folks understand.)
LOL. I got to see them at our local festival about 2 years ago. So many 40-50 somethings like me loving every minute of it. Though even most of the younger people enjoyed it because these guys (and gals) know how to put on a show. True professionals.
I saw Purple Rain the day it came out in theaters and there were people dancing in the aisles and clapping their hands. It was the best movie experience i ever had.

Y'all, Morris Day and The Time...just kicked it. Basically the precursor to New Jack Swing if you listen and watch carefully. Watch Purple Rain. Iconic Prince and iconic Morris!
YAY! Haven't watched it yet, but YAY! Hope you guys check out The Bird as well. Even "Fishnet", and "777-9311" are a vibe! Morris played Prince's love rival in Purple Rain and a lot of the footage in the video is from the movie.
You can see his influence on Bruno Mars. The second you heard Morris Day and the Time, your body danced onto the floor. They were so much fun! ✌️😁❤️🎶🎶🎶👍
Stood in line for 9 hours to see him and Prince in concert. This was in the 80's when you had to purchase tickets from music stores and not online. This is one of my all time favorites of the. 80's.
If you guys are interested in more of that Minneapolis, Prince sound, I would suggest you check out the following artists and songs: "Erotic City", by Prince "Curiosity" (written by Prince), by The Jets "Nasty Girl", by Vanity 6 "Undress", by Vanity "Holly Rock", by Sheila E. "Modernaire", by Dez Dickeson "Player's Ball", by Mazarati All of these artists, and songs were either signed by prince, or worked/toured with Prince, or were highly influenced by him.
You got to check out their first Hit called COOL. It takes me back to my first pass during basic training in 1981. It was a club banger. And yes. He had swag like no other. Morris Day. To coin a fraze was just too cool for school.
Your comparison to Prince is spot-on. This is basically a Prince song - they released his demo a few years ago and it's almost identical to the final version, right down to the "oh-we-oh-we-oh"s. Basically Prince recorded the track, then took off his vocals and had Morris redo them.
This is from Prince's Movie Purple Rain, one of Prince's creations! You have to see the Whole Movie there are lots of videos from Prince that show parts of the movie!!
Ok, now you've gotta watch "Purple Rain" on one of your movie nights. The band and the song are in the movie, with Prince. This song was HUGE in 1984-85.

This is from Prince's Purple Rain movie. The song itself was produced by Prince, lyrics by Prince, Morris Day and Jesse Johnson. It's Prince playing all instruments on the track except for Jesse Johnson on guitar.
Yeah but the Time themselves were Stellar musicians I saw them with on the 1999 tour Skipped the Purple Rain tour because that was for Newbie’s and adolescent teens So they were a lot tamer than the Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999 tours

Loved ice cream castles
Prince actually played the entire track. Morris did the vocal. The Time had to learn the parts to play them live.
@@electricavenuemusic9282 Yeah they said that
Back in the 90s I was watching an episode of MST3K that featured a Hercules movie.
He didn't write this one. Jesse Johnson wrote this one.
@@baronvonsatan Thank you, I didn't know that.
When you mention Prince, you hit the nail on the head, they are a Prince creation, and this is from the movie Purple Rain in 1984
15 year old me was obsessed with Prince, the Purple Rain movie and soundtrack.
Jay and silent bob sent you guys most of the requests for this song😂
Oak Tree is another high energy throw down by Morris Day!! ❤❤❤❤
"Jerk Out" and "Oak Tree" were 2 huge hits
this was 1984. Morris Day is everything he is depicted to be here-even to-this-day. he is STILL that dude.
Saw Morris Day and the Time at an outdoor music festival in Minneapolis, MN in 1999, later that night Prince played. Was an absolute amazing weekend experience!
Ahh, growing up in the Twin cities in the 80's was great. Prince, Morris Day and the Time at First Avenue, it was the best.
Absolutely Love
Morris Day & the Time
Great Appearance in the Wonderful Prince Movie Purple Rain
Another Must Song by them is “The Bird”
You Will Absolutely Love It
One of the coolest concerts I've ever seen. Morris Day & The Time opened for The Gap Band, Cool & The Gang and headlining was The Isley Brothers. Damn!
My jealousy knows no bounds 🤯
The Time was straight funk. Morris Day was the Lead vocalist Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were part of the band along with Monte Moir on Keyboard and Jellybean Johnson on Drums and Jesse Johnson on Guitar Yes
Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis helped Janet Jackson develop her sound when she started her solo career, right? They are amazing producers.
She recorded here in Minneapolis at Flyte Time studios before they moved to LA. Jellybean still plays guitar here regularly. I see him often.@@doloresbriseno2567
The “O-E-O-E-O” is a take on the Wicked Witch’s guard’s chant in The Wizard of Oz.
BWAAAKK Hallelujah! .....You really gotta check out their track called 'The Bird'. Another dance banger!
This is just such a cool, fun song! It's still great!
When I saw the thumbnail for this on my feed, I exclaimed, "YES!!!" I knew you'd enjoy it. Like everyone else in the comments have said, you MUST watch the "Purple Rain" movie to see all these performances in context.
Oh man! This is a jam! I remember when this came out. Morris Day oozed confidence.
One of Prince's, this was from Purple Rain. BTW, they played in an outdoor concert in florida, my sister and I got on stage with other ladies and it was 1984 all over again! Great show! They even had Jerome bring out the mirror! (Only us old folks understand.)
Who you calling old??? Bwahaha LMMFAO
But please don't ever call us old again!!!
@@toddyoshimura2043 Ok, just me. I'm old.
Never forget the time I randomly met Morris Day walking down the street in Richmond.
He is EVERY bit the dude you see in this song!
Two of the best chair dancer's on TH-cam 😂😂😂 ! Jay and Amber , hope you have a wonderful day !
💜💜💜 his Royal Purpleness Prince himself founded and brought Morris Day and the Time to us. The clips are from Prince's movie Purple Rain. Loved this reaction and Love you guys J and Amber. Thanks for the party today. ❤❤
The video has footage from Prince's movie Purple Rain, The Time was also in the movie.
Love, love, love this band.
"The Bird' was favorite at our high school dances ❤🎶
After seeing this in Purple Rain, the best performance of this was at the end of Jay and Slient Bob Strike Back.
MORRIS DAY! That’s one cool dude. Grew up with Prince. Lots of Prince-isms in their music.
There should be a lot of Prince-isms, seeing that Prince literally CREATED The Time.
You can see his influence on Bruno Mars. The second you heard Morris Day and the Time, your body danced onto the floor. They were so much fun!
✌️😁❤️🎶🎶🎶👍
Yes. I recently saw a video from The Time when Alexander O'Neal was the lead. Bruno completely stole their style.
Now you're speaking my language. Awesome song. Great reaction. Make me smile
Definitely 80s time, dance time club time. Lots of fun time great music time.😂❤
Classic classic 1980s on the soundtrack for Purple rain
Stood in line for 9 hours to see him and Prince in concert. This was in the 80's when you had to purchase tickets from music stores and not online. This is one of my all time favorites of the. 80's.
If you guys are interested in more of that Minneapolis, Prince sound, I would suggest you check out the following artists and songs:
"Erotic City", by Prince
"Curiosity" (written by Prince), by The Jets
"Nasty Girl", by Vanity 6
"Undress", by Vanity
"Holly Rock", by Sheila E.
"Modernaire", by Dez Dickeson
"Player's Ball", by Mazarati
All of these artists, and songs were either signed by prince, or worked/toured with Prince, or were highly influenced by him.
You got to check out their first Hit called COOL. It takes me back to my first pass during basic training in 1981. It was a club banger. And yes. He had swag like no other. Morris Day. To coin a fraze was just too cool for school.
Purple Rain" with Prince""was a great movie, and Morris Day and the Time""were such a great ,funky, fun"" band! So cool!!
GEEZ...I'd forgotten about this song lol. Such fun!!!
Another song by Morris Day you need to check out is "Fishnet" which came out in 1988.
Your comparison to Prince is spot-on. This is basically a Prince song - they released his demo a few years ago and it's almost identical to the final version, right down to the "oh-we-oh-we-oh"s. Basically Prince recorded the track, then took off his vocals and had Morris redo them.

"Jerome, get my mirror". Been a minute since I have seen this movie/ heard their music. ❤
The 80's were soooo good! Try 'Oh Sheila' by Ready for the world, you'll love it for sure! 'Fake' or 'Criticise' by Alexander O'neal are also bangers from the eighties!
Oh, my goodness! You two ARE GETTIN' GOOD!!! When Jay said something about it sounding like Prince, I almost screamed "YES!" A couple years ago, you would have never picked up on the "Prince Connection!". I am so proud of you two! 💞. Now you need to listen to " The Bird.". And then watch "Purple Rain."
Cool guys I haven’t watched it yet. Thank you for playing it considering Prince produced this band. This is from the film purple rain. This is Prince rival in the film.
Been to that club, First Avenue, Minneapolis. Frequented in the early 90s. I had a Jersey shirt with them on the front when I was in junior high, early 80s. Classic.
YES!!!!!!! The GREATEST SONG from the GREATEST BAND....GREAT CHOICE GREAT PIC
If you see anything from the purple rain soundtrack, this is one of those songs from that soundtrack because Morris Day and the time were on that soundtrack with Prince so this is from the 80s
I'm from the MTV generation. This song came out the year after I graduated, 1984. I loved Morris Day's presence in this funky video, especially when Morris summons Jerome for the mirror, hahaha!! 😂😂
Back when MTV stood for something...
Yes!! MTV was amazing when it came out.
@@VickiCampbell-1216 I dug MTV for years. And VH1 after that. A pity they both drifted...
@@fnjesusfreak It was all great while it lasted. I loved VH1 too.
3:39 - Funny that you say that Jay, because Prince is the one who put Morris Day and the Time on. Plus, this song is on the soundtrack of the legendary, cult classic Prince film, "Purple Rain". If you notice, much of the music video are from clips of that movie.
From the greatest decade, the 80’s, and the movie Purple Rain! Great memories!
This is from the movie Purple Rain. Starring Prince. I think late 80's or early 90's.
This is from Prince's Purple Rain movie. The song itself was produced by Prince, lyrics by Prince, Morris Day and Jesse Johnson. It's Prince playing all instruments on the track except for Jesse Johnson on guitar.
Yeah but the Time themselves were Stellar musicians I saw them with on the 1999 tour
Skipped the Purple Rain tour because that was for Newbie’s and adolescent teens
So they were a lot tamer than the Dirty Mind, Controversy and 1999 tours
The Bird, 777-9311, Cool, The Walk, Jerk Out, Gigolos Get Lonely Too among others. Fishnet was a pretty popular song by Morris as a solo artist.
