I, too, discovered FairPlay, CO in a road trip the first part of December about 2006. The town was dead for the tourist season. I stopped at an ice cream/coffee shop where there was an EMS squad vehicle out front. As an ER nurse at that time, I knew I had automatic friends. They told me about an old hotel(?) who's owner would give me a history tour. Wow! The part I remember the most was her legendary history, some verified, some just urban legend. Chinese workers, tunnels under the town. I pretty sure that was true. The legend part---that when the foreign laborers were no longer needed, the "bigwigs", no longer needing nor wanting wanting these laborers around, had all the Chinese enter the tunnels and the entrances were blasted shut. Legend at that time.
COOL WAY COOL WE WENT Camping Up There For YEARS & YEARS & YA There Are REALLY GOOD NICE TROUT All Up & Down That Creek, Love It Up There & That Makes Us Want To Go Back Like NOW NOW NOW OH YA N O W 😀
It's amazing how many museums there are in America, you could visit one everyday and never run out. I love small town America, it never disappoints. Amazing video as always Russ!
Well, Russ, you really struck gold with this one. This is an example of what to do when the mine wears out. At most places in the west where this happens, what you find is a ghost town. Fairplay, CO has shown there is another way, and what a beautiful example for the other mining towns to preserve what they've worked hard to build at 10,000 feet up in the mountains. There are still over 700 people living here making the tourists happy there are still places like this to see what there ancestors have preserved.
Lived near Fairplay for several years 40 years ago. Learned to pan and prospect for gold around Fairplay and of course in Summit County just to the north. Great area to recreate !!!
For (what seems like) a small town, that was one of the most impressive museums I've seen.Incredible amount of artifacts/possessions of our ancestors. It was a complex! Easy-going commentary- nice. I always like the way you visit an area, then end with the arial view of what we have seen on the ground. I never get tired of the music- perfect for all of your stuff.
I had no idea this little town was so close to Denver. When I lived there in the 1990s my ex husband loved to go on back road excursions, but he was more interested in the backcountry than in exploring little towns. If I ever make it back to Colorado I'll have to check some of these places out.
Hello again. What a beautiful place. You've done a wonderful job commentating. We could never take great trips like that. Because of you we're able to See all these lovely places. And the Museums... Wow Whenever we went to Museums long ago we were rushed through because of school field trips. This is really entertaining and I shared some of them with my Granddaughter. Who thinks She knows everything! Lol Thank you for sharing your talents with all of us.Have a great year!
❤ Never realized what a wonderful state Colorado is. Being I was born there, but alas my father was military and I was only there till 10 months old ,then he got order for Germany where my brother was born . So sad to say we didn't get to go back😢 . I have a grandson who lives with his wife in Steamboat Colorado. They work at the Ski Resort there. And do Landscaping off season. ❤ They love it, all the free 🎿 sking they want. Love your videos Russ.
You can see Dinosaur remains in Florissant (a French word meaning "blooming"), CO. I went through Rocky Mountains Nat'l Park several times and it is always a joy to admire America's summits. There is snow even in August at the higher elevations. I took a camping site in the park in July and it was 34 deg F at 6h00 in the morning the next day but the sky was filled with stars I had never seen before. Magnificent videos you make ! Watch not to catch a bad cold in this thin, cold air. RICHARD
Seeing the mountains and driving through farming.. nicest change of atmosphere. Museum seemed to need a burro ride or stagecoach! That’s place start reading the signs and before you know .. time for supper. Thanks again for fun afternoon!
It’s nice to see a little town have such a nice fire dept..that’s awesome ❤..sure helps if there’s ever a forest fire close to town.. Love this video! Ty Russ!
Location, location, location - you know where to go Sir! I too appreciate your masterful drone work and the rear camera really comes in handy when you’ve just passed a really beautiful area. God bless you! John 3:16, 14:6 KJV
Since you have to get a permit to film in NP's and federal lands (sad) scenic byways, small towns, museum and your drone flights will be the focus of your travels. Thank you Russ really do enjoy your videos.
I probably passed you along Highway 285 one of the days. I am always back-and-forth between Denver and Ridgeway a town that's between Montrose and Ouray. It's hard to track down what day you actually Record versus post. I know you have a ton of editing to do on everything. Oh well what I was getting too is I kept my eyes peeled for the van!! Glad to see you up in my neck of the woods.
Lovely journey 🤗💕am uncertain if I'll go to Colorado again so thank you for the tour. Fair play area is really awesome.....that museum....must have scoured the desert for a lot of antiques. No wonder small towns post: no engine brakes....that semi was loud. Be safe.🤗
💜💚💙 Great drone work! Love the rear views too. I'm following along on Google Maps and marking stops for my own upcoming road trip in October (yep, cooler). Hoping to catch Fall color up there, but without the ice and snow. Thanks, Russ!
Straight out of Gunsmoke, loved the old town. Alma CO is 20 min north of Fairplay. We ate a great "burger," and stayed the night in a saloon reminiscent of Miss Kitty's place. The rooms were pine board, the bed was wrought iron with squeaking springs, antique night stand and porcelain water bowl/ pitcher. You had to short hall to community bathroom with overhead tanks and chains. The parlor was fixed with antique furniture and working player piano. There were only six rooms split level above the main saloon/eatery. The best part was the price of $6/night/ per person 1983. We were skiing in Breckenridge, so what a bargain. You never know until you get off the beaten path. Russ thanks for video. I only meant to watch 10 min!
Another great place I've got to put on my bucket list, keep up the good work, love your videos, Stay safe, I'm a full time nomad in a bus these days, hope our paths cross one day........
I've passed through Hartsel on my way to Lake George for some fly fishing in Eleven Mile Canyon. What I've learned from this video is that when I'm traveling in Colorado on my summer and fall excursions I don't spend nearly enough time stopping off and taking in the history of many small towns like Fairplay. I plan to correct that very soon.
Russ, your adventures are absolutely amazing! Enjoy the way you take us with you touring! I was wondering why you didn't travel to Buena Vista, Colorado and Leadville, Colorado? Absolutely beautiful area full of history. Leadville is where the Arkansas River starts also. Thank you for all you share! Love all your camera talent!🎉❤🎉
Great video on FairPlay! As we live in Denver and previously in Bailey down US 285 we’ve been to FairPlay many times, and South Park City never fails to amaze us. Pretty cool old town with some good restaurants. Btw, the Hand Hotel IS supposedly haunted!
My husband and I were there a couple years ago. We also camped at Middle Fork RV park. We enjoyed exploring Fairplay especially the breweries and distillery. 😁
Was headed for Fairplay from Leadville up and over the Mosquito Pass trail on July 20th. But that snow you showed at the end of your video blocked the trail just after the summit & I had to turn around. Thanks for showing me what I missed! Seeing South Park walking museum now added to my list.
Leadville is another small town, once booming mining town. It's at over 11,000 ft altitude. There's a story about a lady called Baby Doe that's interesting to check out.
I remember back in the 80s. My family used to eat at the mustard seed cafe in Fairplay on the way back home to Colorado Springs from visiting family in Buena Vista.
Did YOU buy Russ a cup of coffee today? :) Don't forget to do that while enjoying these great videos! We get to see places that we would surely never get to see if not for his videos!

Hi Russ! Another fine video of your Colorado travels. I really enjoy them. When we travel, we take as many of the older highways as possible. There is much more to see and do, and the fuel prices are usually less. Thanks so much for sharing your travels. I pass you videos around to family and friends. Safe driving and stay well!
Russ, really enjoy your vlogs, I heard you say you belonged to the Elks, why don't you ever stay at rhem? My folks traveled all over the country staying at Elks Lodges...just curious, Rich in Sacramento
Wonder where you're going next? Have to wait and see. Hope it cools down for you, hopefully you didn't get stuck in those thunder and lightning storms.

What a gem you found in that museum! The creaky stairs just added to the charm-and brought back memories for me😁
Nice museum! Reminds me of Cowtown in Wichita.
