No screamers, no monsters, no killing spree... just an ambient music that constantly makes you wonder why you are scared when nothing scary is happening before your eyes. This movie is not a masterpiece, it is THE masterpiece of cinema. Period.
The “If you see another person that looks identical to you, run away and hide” trend reminds me a whole lot of this great classic and I like that type of horror that’s mainly just eerie with few jump scares, like something along the lines of The Mandela Catalogue and Graylock.
@@IAmCoolcashGGI’m never going to listen to the opinions of somebody who can’t even spell the word slasher. And no, it is not a wannabe slasher. It is so much deeper than that.

I feel bad for her honestly. The majority of the scenes she's in is an actual reaction from her, for example, the staircase scene that's shown in the video. The "poor" acting skills are because she was actually afraid. They made her redo scenes over and over again, making her actually terrified. She got an award for the worst acting, but when they found out how she was treated, they took it back and apologized. She did great in my opinion. She did a good job of what it would be like to have an actual reaction. I think that finding out that she was actually afraid really gives the movie a physiological viewpoint. To see an actual reaction of fear. This comment makes me sound like I am high T^T
Exactly and there was a time where I wished I went insane like a Jack because of my depression and loneliness but now that I’ve met such an angelic and amazingly relatable girl I hope I don’t so I can continue to see her without being stuck in a mental institution. Maybe being sane has its perks
It's the best edit on the Shining. It's a master piece. Everything is good about. The writing, the actors, the shots, the ambiance.. everything. I love it !
@@tigersgedanken1246 Because the movie is really a bad adaptation of the book (and it is the case i read the book), and don't have the same message. Fun fact, there is a TV Show also named The Shining which is more accurate to the book.
@@tigersgedanken1246It was a horrible adaption, as the previous commentor mentioned, it didn’t give any of the characters justice from a character focused standpoint. But it’s still an incredible film, so is the novel. It’s just two completely different mediums, and Kubrick knew that all too well. So he put his own spin on it, and it became a classic. The book is just as good if not better IMO, King was more than on fire writing that, he was a Phoenix, putting his typewriter to its near breaking point.
@@Stane_FROne of the best Haunted House/ Hotel stories ever to be honest… King made The Overlook come alive with a mind of its own, rich history dark secrets, it was all so well thought out. Jack in the novel was how King felt at the time as a struggling alcoholic father, raising children that he wasn’t sure he even deserved.
And people dare tell me this isn’t the best physiological horror film ever made. Book is even better it delves into the reality of a man loosing grip of his family due to alcoholism, mixed in with a hotel that basically is an entity itself that bleeds history. Not to mention the character work is off the charts in the novel, King wrote the book in a month by the way. 200,000 word count that’s 5,000 words a day… Stupid impressive but it’s cause king was loosing grip on his family at the same time. He put his heart and soul into that novel.
5,000 words per day. Oh my gosh thats like 12 pages a day… And I agree the book is better, and this is my favorite physiological horror film of all time.
This movie has something in it the place it was shot, the scenarios in the movies, silence of the hotel n that feeling of being alone in such place...its a perfect pschohorror masterpiece...
I got the ghost energy of jack whenever he stare to camera like the ghost is staring right through me his stare is working spiritually working on audience
Read the book you’ll be riveted. It’s just as good but even better cause it tells a slightly different story, with Kings absurdly good character work. It has two of the scariest chapters i’ve ever read in a book, “The Ballroom” and “Room 217”.
I see them as two different things completely, this is my favorite film of all time when it comes to phycological horror. But I like the Book even better than Kubrick’s adaptation, Jack in the novel really was a family man. And you really got to see him struggle with alcoholism as he looses grip on his family in real time at The Overlook. That’s just my thoughts though, I think both endings are absolutely fantastic without discussing any spoilers.
Watched this for the first time last night and I was genuinely surprised. The Shining is very ahead of its time. Everything from the story to the ending twist is just beautiful. Jack Nicholson really did an amazing job playing the part of a loving man slowly losing his mind. Stanley Kubrick as well with the directing has made this one of my favourite psychological horror movies. Would definitely recommend everyone to go watch this.
tbh I see jack’s point (also Stephen king’s point), Wendy was truly annoying and only there to scream and cry, although jack in the actual book also says many times his tired of her and wants her to shut up whenever she would complain, while reading the book I could see Wendy as a nice woman and not only a whimper
Wendy and Jack both had a LOT more to them in the book in my opinion. Jack had done bad things and only changed when he thought he'd killed someone, but he was genuinely trying to get himself and his life together for his family, and Wendy didn't really flip into insistence or hysterics until things had gotten pretty bad, if not plainly supernatural. Danny of course also had more character development in the book, but honestly was pretty much the same overall.
There's a theory that all of the family had the shining but only Danny knew a small fraction of how it worked until he met Dick and I personally like this theory because it actually explains why they all see the ghost.
the shining truly is such a beautiful movie. i resent kubrick for how he treated duvall on set, but i can tell he got the result he wanted. this is a truly beautiful movie.

Jack Nicholson is scary all by himself!! He is crazy looking without even trying! Perfect casting for this movie, he looks dangerous and like he cant wait to hurt her😱
This movie is so good that it literally gave its characters a past and trauma that you can actively feel and grasp at if you pay attention to what the hotel is showing you. It’s just so tangible and the family is so close to you can get to reality in a movie. The fact Stanley Kubrick was able to make the movie so expressive and deep while being so ambiguous is only paralleled by the world building of dark souls in the way it is like a translation of a standard novel that has been misinterpreted and out through a blender to make it almsot incomprehensible and incompatible with ideals we would use to relate to these people. That what makes Jack and Wendy and Danny so disturbing, they do everything wrong but because they’re so mentally ill and dysfunctional that when the hotel preys on their fears it makes sense for them to react in the horrible and self destructive ways they do
