    I've been a vegetarian for 38 years, but I still got diabetes. I've been vegan for 6 years now but I still got cancer. The cancer is stage IV and I've been on chemo for just over a year now. I improved my vegan diet through the chemo. I think it's helped with the success in greatly shrinking all of my tumors and to the minimal side effects I've experienced during the treatment. The cancer was caused at least in part by the stress of my job. Fortunately I've been able to retire and remove that stressor from my life.

      Being an old school vegetarian probably wasn't much healthier than eating the typical crappy diet that most people were eating twenty, thirty years ago. In the '80s and '90s, I would assume that the average vegetarian's diet was absolutely packed with trans fat (it was in margarine, donuts, microwave popcorn, etc.), and trans fat is awful for you. Thankfully, I think it's illegal to add trans fat to food now. Obviously, eggs, milk, and cheese are unhealthy, and I'm guessing they're just as unhealthy as meat, but probably not as unhealthy as processed meat (which seems to be the king of unhealthy).

      the cockiness and arrogance of the replies in reaction to Anne's original post is really heartbreaking to see. Yes, of course a healthful diet will support the body to stay healthy, and not develop disease, but geez, people, it is not a guarantee!!
      i know it makes people feel "safe" to say "i eat healthy/perfect (whatever that may be to said person), so i will never develop any problems..." this is, i am sorry to break it to you, not a guarantee... just like how my 91 year old grandma is surviving just fine on the worst diet of supermarket cakes, chocolates and diet coke...
      life isn't always so simple as we'd like it to be. i really do understand why people are posting these rude comments, basically saying to Anne that she did it wrong... "BAD PERSON! YOU DID IT WRONG, now you have cancer!!"
      these selfish, careless messages are fuelled by fear, because you yourself want to believe so badly that if you just eat your "daily dozen", ill health will never happen to you... i get it, truly... i want to believe this too... but i know it is too short sighted. and not in the least: very hurtful towards Anne.

    • @barbettecaravaggio7675
      @barbettecaravaggio7675 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      i'd also like to add that the human body is not a petri dish in a lab. it is not: put in broccoli, out comes cancer deflection. the body and our health is holistic... there are a lot of factors deciding how strong the body remains to ward off disease, and yes, one of these is diet.
      i am plant based myself, mostly whole foods, with an occassional window for something "not so ideal", because i want a joyful life. i honestly think we are miscalculating how much the mind impacts disease as well...
      broccoli yes, but fun and family and stress management, and LOVE are just as important! this is probably why my junk food grandma is still thriving... she surely never bought broccoli herself, and if she would, she'd cook it to death and smother it in cheese sauce (i know, because i used to eat at her house sometimes as a kid).

    This is what I preach to my clients ... focus on your nutritional lifestyle. This is always the root. Being proactive is always the best approach rather than reactive. Everything that happens is a culmination of little things adding up. So we might as well build the right building blocks to have the best chance of living the healthiest quality of life possible.

    I was told that we all have small micro tumors in our bodies (as they are found in autopsies), but fortunately our immune system is capable of detecting them and clearing them out. Tumor cells appear mostly by errors in cell division, so none of us is 100% protected from that bad luck. But cancer doesn't happen after just one of those errors (mutations): cancer cells need to accumulate over time more mutations, and those additional mutations are supposed to happen less often if we follow a good diet and lifestyle, staying away from known mutagens. So, yes, diet can be protective and the antioxidants in produce are weapons against the development of the tumors.

    I've chosen Not to eliminate meat, fish or eggs but instead to increase eating whole foods and plant based foods and eating Organic. My reasoning for this is that the latter, meat, provides fast, high levels of nutrients. Also my dad who did have prostate cancer, (which most men will get to some degree), ate everything and lived until 90 yrs. Of course I wasn't brought up in the hills and agricultural society of the Mediterranean. Also Choosing Organic. Thanks Doc! From nurse Tony. I was reading somewhere that when oncologists run a PET scan to look for cancers, they use a sugar dose mixed with the isotope to find the cancer sites, because apparently cancer cells gobble up the sugar as energy and can be spotted easily on the scan. So much so , that , starving the cancer cells by eliminating sugar (CARBS) is considered a practical therapy for enhancing cancer protocol. Is that true?

    • @happycook6737
      @happycook6737 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Before my cancer surgery they did a PET scan and I had to drink 1 liter of the most disgusting sugar drink. I love coca cola but this drink was horrendous. I don't know that we can be so simplistic as to say eliminating sugar harms cancer. But just in case, I eliminated all added sugars from my diet, all fats, all salt and went unprocessed vegan heavy in veggies, some beans, some flax seed, etc. Bleech 🤢I hate my food now and must be careful to not overeat fruit. But cancer is far worse and when/if it comes back is more deadly. I had surgery but if it comes back will need radiation and chemo. It terrifies me. If a doctor said eating cardboard prevented cancer I'd be eating cardboard.

    How come when my brother was going through chemotherapy they told us he wasn't allowed to eat raw vegetables? They said it was because he would be too sensitive to possible bacterial contaminates... We listened to the advice of the doctors at the time, but couldn't we just have washed them off?

    • @paulveg8524
      @paulveg8524 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Chemotherapy absolutely destroys the immune system. Even an apple that is washed in soapy, hot water still contains enough bacteria on its skin to proliferate in your gut. Bananas are completely harmless though because they are essentially sterile inside the peal. I had one round of chemotherapy last winter and the food I missed the most was salad. Eat your greens everyday!

    • @JeffGrube
      @JeffGrube 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      This is due to the low neutrophils due to the effect of chemo. I’ve first hand experienced this advice from one doctor and while they said to avoid produce they said to ear packaged foods, canned meats, mayonnaise, etc. it was all on a handout. I didn’t listen to this advice at all. The doctors couldn’t understand why we had no side effects and we fully recovered. Most doctors have no idea about nutrition.
