Just picked up a '22 Passport and man, what an SUV. Great power, can get 25-27 MPG on the highway and is quite capable off-road, One of the best V6's in the world and not the run of the mill AWD system with real torque vectoring make it kind of a unicorn compared to most mid sized SUV's.

Have ‘19 Passport and absolutely love it. It’s so much bigger inside than it looks. It’s very wide. Seats are comfy, rides good, handles surprisingly well, hauls butt, I’ve put a whole couch from IKEA in the back, full size doors from Home Depot, slept in many a times, and it has Vtec!! Great vehicle other than the dog gears of the 9 speed.

The Passport is a GREAT car! It is great!! It has tremendous Headroom, it has Amazing interior room in general, the rear cargo space is amazing! We own both a Sequoia AND a Rav4 Prime and the Rav4 is just so dang small! This vehicle is on par space wise with the Sequoia minus the third row and maybe a few inches of shoulder/hip width inside. But the overall space inside is amazing. Also, its just easy to drive, way too easy to the point that it is "boring" but it is great! @carls1958 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Agreed, one is in our garage right now, but I believe the 5,000 pound towing capacity is only with the optional transmission cooler. Otherwise is rated at 3,500 pounds if I recall correctly. Tows our 1,200 pound teardrop camper easily, but may still upgrade to the cooler for safety margin when we head out west. Our PP replaced a 2012 Subaru Forester which was a great little vehicle, but only had a four cylinder.

The 4Runner comparison may sound crazy, but I think Honda markets the Passport against how most people actually use the 4R, instead of the full capabilities of the vehicle. Headed to a campsite or live off of a dirt road that occasionally turns to mud? The Passport has you covered and with better comfort and daily driveability. It is also excellent in snow. Love the 4R, but for most people it is overkill and there is a supreme tradeoff in driving dynamics and gas mileage.

Love my 2021 Passport. The funny thing was, neither of you bought up Acura offerings, because if you buy a loaded PP, you could definitely afford a low trim MDX, or a loaded RDX. But for some of us;; we wouldn't be caught dead in anything branded as a luxury vehicle. I live in Canada's snowbelt, and believe me....not too many vehicles can do in the snow what a PP can do with snow tires.. Honda’s own site lists a difference in the cargo room between CRV and Passport of 10.9ft3 or 300 litres aft of the rear seats. That’s a significant difference. The legroom is quite similar, but if you care about how much junk you can toss in the back, they’re really not competition at all.

as someone who is both big and tall I can tell you most assuredly that the pilot and passport are significantly roomier than the CR-V. I can't even comfortably get myself to the door hatch on the CR-V. my neck doesn't fold down that far. The Grand Cherokee has more driver room than the CR-V and the Pilot/Passport even more than that. Not quite Atlas space but still very good. I just wish the Honda had a more passionate styling. The exterior screams "minivan with an identity crisis" and the interior just kind of yawns.

I dont like the crv as I don't really like any of the cuvs based on compact cars. I do dig that this has decent towing ability and more size to it - regardless of thr crv dimensions it seems bigger and bulkier/burlier in a way I like. The crv feels like a tin can compared to these.
I know its a less useful pilot but as somebody who rarely has people in the back seat I absolutely don't want a 7 seater, and the extra 10 inches of pilot over this is just more weight and size to park, etc.

I think that the point of the Trailsport package is to determine 2 separate things. 1. Will people like a more Offroad-y version of what we already have, without having to design and manufacture a new suspension and engine setup (unlike the Wilderness series from Subaru). 2. How can we capitalize on the current trend of black plastic cladding and neon colors that means offroading?
I do believe this is Honda dipping their toes in a market as a test without actually allocating an entire R/D team to develop a new class/segment for their cars. The only people that seem to get any real support are the people behind the Type R stuff. If this sells well I think that will give the executive who thought it up the leeway to go further into the outdoors space.

    • @SIGINT007

But at least with the Outback Wilderness, they started at changing the final drive gear and put in the up-rated CVT (that hurt to type...) to support the 2.4l turbo. This Hondoo just slapped some different wheels and some orange trim to see how many suckers will buy it, but I'm guessing it will be years (if at all) before they add mechanical bits to actually upgrade it.

      Somewhat?
Nothing competes directly with the 4Runner. The 4Runner is on a truck platform; this is a Pilot with a 8 inches cut off the back.
So it compares with a Highlander... But if that Highlander had 8 inches cut off the back.

4-runner is old school body on frame. Passport is unibody more like Grand Cherokee. 4-runner can lock wheels for true off-road capability.
Hat said, this rides and handles better than 4-runner. No nose dive on braking. AWD in it is superb. Not just front to back but also left to right and clutch based. This is enough to get you places outdoors minus rock climbing.
Engine in this is VTEC-yo. Superb vehicle here.

If you want offroad just get a 4x4 with a 4hi 4 low transfercase. I got my Jeep for offroading and my 8200rpm EK for racing. Best of both worlds.
Edit: Honda had literally 40 years to release a 4Runner competitor. But they release a run of the mill AWD/FWD suv. Why would they have 2 similar suvs (pilot, passport) and not make one if them a real competitor to Jeep Wrangler and 4Runner?
Passport pilot crv hrv. All the same but different body style.

100 percent of people buying this are not rock crawling. This is an SUV with lots of room. It has a NA V6 Vtec with a 9 speed transmission. Mostly old school.
4Runner people like to go off road and rock crawl. Some don’t. They drive old and bulky. I hate that old outdated clutch fan on engine. It creaks inside. Paint it horrible. Body is tinny.
4Runner looks great though. Especially that new green color.
Passport drives a lot better on roads and especially highways. It’s much quicker and super comfortable. It’s a lot wider than 4 Runner too. It’s has a lot more room too and is better at moving big boxes or big items.
If I was Rock crawling, I would buy a cheap Jeep. Simple as that.

  • @cayman9873
    @cayman9873 ปีที่แล้ว

Why would you not just buy a pilot ??
The new trailsport is not more rugged.. it is just tarted up to look more outdoors. The honda does not have body on frame.. or long reach suspension.. just like putting plastic cladding does not make a truck more capable.. ie.. the wrangler cheap stuck out fenders make it more fragile and less off road capable.. sticking little stuff on the honda does not it better on rough terrain or deeper mud or more slippery rocks..
How short are the seat bottoms ??

Kinda agree. I drive 70 miles a day round trip to work in a Subaru Impreza Sport that I generally love the handling of, but my wife's Passport with active torque vectoring is actually kind of fun in the twisties. That was surprising in a vehicle of its size and design. The lower profile tires offered on other models in the line are ridiculous, especially given the roads where I live. (Had to replace 40-series tires and wheels on the Impreza Sport after destroying a couple in potholes.) This is perfect for a couple of empty-nesters with a dog, who plan on towing a small camper around and loading all their camping gear, canoe, etc. I do wish the gas mileage was a little better, but I'm going for longevity that I'm not sure the turbo four cylinders will offer. Watch Sarah-N-Tuned or Jon DZ's reviews for off-road reviews of the Passport.

The Honda Trailsport package is just for looks, can't have a full sized spare tire, and needs to be priced lower.
The v6 delivers about 18% less MPG than is advertised/rated. The direct injection system adds 1 oz of oil in to the air intake manifold, every 3,400 miles and this will lead to carbon build up, at the time that you are most relying on Honda's longevity and reliability at (around) 300,000 miles.
The Passport Touring with its acoustic glass and sound dampening rims were sacrificed to allow the "just for looks" Trailsport, with its noisier cabin to exist.
The Passport isn't going to turn any heads nor attract buyers, from other brands, because of price alone. It's a Honda-boy thing.
