    Thanks for doing the "can you sleep in it" test. Please do that for all SUV's and crossovers. Move the front seat all the way forward and fully upright for the smaller ones. The gap can be filled pretty easily and the real question is whether a 6 foot tall person has room to lie down flat. The manufacturer never says and I'll bet a lot of your viewers want to know. Cubic foot capacity or how many carry-on bags it will hold doesn't give you the same information.

    My Husband just bought me one of these tonight. When it was new Dealership had it lifted and put bigger more aggressive wheels and tires on it They also put skid plates underneath. Apparently they agree that it needs the changes you mentioned. 🤗 Can't wait to start playing with my new rig.

    This vehicle is fantastic in snow and ice. The snow storm that shut down 95 and northern VA, gave me a chance to test this is bad weather. Even at 14 inches of snow and 1-3 inches of ice was zero issues.

    I think people forget most buyers will use this vehicle as a daily driver and occasionally for light off-roading, so it's adequate for its intended purpose.

    Good video Ryan! I was waiting for this one! One thing about ground clearance is that “maximum” clearance starts getting more important on the technical stuff. The Passport has 8.1” of minimum and 12.5” of at the pinch weld / rocker panel. A Subaru Ascent has 8.7” min / 9.0” max and a Subaru Outback wilderness has 9.5” / 11.5”. This clearance is so incredibly important because the tires line up with the rocker panel after you drive up something like a Boulder. This allows a Stock Passport to overcome a 9 inch Boulder without body damage. It has the 20.4:1 crawl ratio with a real automatic transmission to slowly crawl up the above mentioned obstacle. **Because the way a CVT operates and non aggressive gearing, a Subaru Outback wilderness would need to use momentum. Also, because the lack of maximum clearance (or rocker clearance, as I like to cal it) the OBW would make damaging contact with the boulder**.
    My Honda Passport has a 3.5” lift with 32.1” tires. I have 12” of minimum clearance and 16” of maximum clearance, which proves the Trail Sport trim could have a lot of potential! The Subaru Outback wilderness is capped at around 10-10.5”. A friend lifted his OBW 2” and only benefited from another inch min clearance. The geometry of the subaru global platform chassis just doesn’t allow to take advantage of a larger lift.
    Will the future Honda Trailsports have 12 inches of minimum ground clearance? I have no idea, but that sure would be awesome!!!! I’d love to see the trailsport, or any other iVTM4 equipped AWD on your test hill. If you can’t find one, I’ll drive all the way up there (from California).

    • @richeyrich2203
      @richeyrich2203 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The trail sport doesn’t have any different cleanses and mechanical, right? It’s a visual package. All trim levels have the same capacity.

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richeyrich2203 for 2022, that is correct. The Pilot goes from 7.3" clearance to 8.1" and all trailsports come with an option for 18 inch wheels. Everything is mechanically the same, so you can pick up a 2019 Passport Sport AWD and have the same capabilities. 20.4:1 crawl ratio and the twin clutch rear diff.

      @terence4427 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@terence4427 all the Passport trims are mechanically the same. So you could get a Sport model with AWD and it would drive anywhere the trailsport would go. Just make sure to downsize the wheels from 20” to either 17” or 18”. More side wall = less chance to get a flat tire and the ability to air down more to increase traction and articulation

    I drive a Land Rover with its legendary computerized 4WD system and I also own a latest-model-year Honda Pilot. I have to admit I have been really impressed with the Honda torque vectoring system. I’ve always been a little bummed out knowing Honda could easily create a very solid off roader even without formal mechanically locking setups. They would easily take a chunk out of Subaru’s market share if they tried. Maybe one day…

    • @tallll70
      @tallll70 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree, Bronco Sport has similar vectoring axle, but they were just little more serious about off road and added manual clutch closing buttons for center and rear... i like the ivtm4 and sh awd additional accelerator to achieve faster spinning rear wheels, but the off road focus is not as prominent

    This feels like what the forester would be, if it didn't have a cvt. Honda is weird. The CR-V has like the worst awd ever , but the passport as far as AWD goes is rather fantastic, and It was my friend Jon dz that sold me on it. I like these. I have a lifted Cherokee trailhawk on mts, but came from previous gen outbacks so I have a soft spot for normal awd vehicles. And I have grown to respect the passport a lot

    Well I say this is the best Passport TrailSport review. Well Tested imo and its a good lesson for Honda to include a full size spare tire if this is a "Trailsport". I don't mind not having A/T tires to save cost and owners can always buy A/T tires. As for the emergency communication on trails maybe having Garmin Inreach would be a great tool. I have the 11.95/mo plan which is ideal for me.

      Agree! Should have full size spare tire. This would also make the cargo floor at roughly the same elevation with the 2nd row seats when folded down. By then, it would be more comfortable/convenient to sleep in it.
      It is very still practical and capable enough in its current design for daily driving and weekend excursions. This is in my 2nd spot (1st is the new Tundra) if I would buy a vehicle.

    • @LionRunner
      @LionRunner 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@autostechnos6432 I've been thinking about waiting for the twin turbo hybrid that should be available shortly to purchase. Even Subaru Wilderness line is on the same line of this Passport with more ground clearance and Subi seem to have lot of aftermarket support when it comes to skids and lockers / limited slip diffs. But the CVT is killing it imo. I think Bronco sport is also same class big contender. I don't know if Rav4 TRD can compete or not with its new AWD system.

    Best 'real life offroad' review I've ever seen! Those dang rocks just come out of nowhere! I've offroad'ed my previous MDX with A/T tires and ended up the same way. It happens. That being said, Trail Sport edition absolutely needs a Full Size Spare Tire. Moreover, for anybody considering a Subaru with a CVT transmission, there is no contest. Continuous Variable Trash (Admittedly not as bad as Jatco). They need to develop an 8 to 10 speed automatic asap, and setup a 'crawl ratio' at least as good as this Passport. Here's hoping they can redesign the body to squeeze in 33" skinny tires. This would do so much more than a suspension lift.

I’ll be patiently waiting as I just got the 2.0t accord.

    It’s kind of interesting that they went ahead and did a Trail Sport trim now vs waiting. If they would’ve waited, and included all the actual real off roading goodies, they may have had a big win. But since they did that beforehand, it’s like they’ve just watered down the name. I also don’t know why they did a Pilot version.
    Maybe there’s a big market for people who like the image of off-roading, and Honda thinks they’ll capitalize on those people.
    I’m also confused on what HPD is for. Are they going to have a Trail Sport Passport with HPD packages? I love Honda but they need to get organized.

    Honda's iVTM-4 is very similar to the Acura sh-awd tq vectoring system. It is a full-time awd system that can do 90/10 to 30/70 between front and rear wheels. It can move that 70% rear tq to 100% of either rear wheel as needed. The Honda version is tuned for Utility/Comfort and the Acura system is tuned for more aggressive sporty driving. The PIlot is NOT a 4Runner or Jeep Trailhawk. The Pilot is a weekend warrior vehicle, cruise all day at +80 mph on the hwy, and handle rush hour traffic while returning good mpgs in comfort for +150,000 miles.

I was disappointed at some of the changes that actually made it even less off road worthy compared to my 08 RL: poorer departure angle(those nice looking dual exhausts hanging down lower) and maybe other angles as well and even less ground clearance, no tow hooks. And they went from 17" to 18" wheels! What were they thinking? With lower gears and the newer iVTM-4, there was a chance at really improving off road ability, but dang they made it worse in a couple of areas. But, they also made it even better on road. So nice and quiet and great ride, and on a 1200 round trip to and up and down the Smoky Mountains, I averaged 24.6 MPG, and on a 2000+ mile trip to and from MN, I got between 26 and 28.3 MPG! I never got over 21, usually less, highway MPG on my 08. So they definitely chose to bias more towards the highway, and when on the highway I love it. But 18" or taller wheels off road is just not the way to go, IMO. I saw a video where a megabuck Land Rover with, I kid you not, 20" wheels( 255/60R-20), blew TWO tires on- one tire and then the full sized spare- on ONE small rock! A fantastic off roader crippled with 20" wheels! Crazy!

    All bark and no bite. Puzzled as to why consumers need to be convinced that this is more than just a mall-crawler. Good job marketing department on that slick trail sport badge. At least it will last longer than any domestic off-roader as long as you keep it out of these conditions.

    I've taken my Pilot off the beaten path a few times with great success. Love the AWD system. It climbs steep dirt hills with aplomb. It eats silt and sand for breakfast. But I also have AT tires on it so that helps a lot. What I won't do is go rock climbing with my Pilot. As mentioned in this video, low ground clearance, no underbody armor, no full size spare, and no tow points makes this a risky proposition offroad.
    Technically, I could lift the Pilot a couple of inches, add a full size spare, and skid plates to make it really offroad capable but it would still have one weakness; no tow points. That little eyelet under the front driver side is attached to the subframe and a hard yank would likely tear the whole front end out. The back has no tow points unless you install a tow hitch. But being a unibody that tow hitch wouldn't be rated for much more than 5000 lbs.
    It's sad because this platform could be so capable with the awesome AWD system and engine/tranny combo. A few design changes and this platform would be so much better than the Subaru Wilderness and right below the 4Runner.

      I like the size of the 2023 Passport but might go with the 2023 Pilot Trailsport because of the skid plate, recovery points, trail cam and more rigid body. Wish the Passport Trailsport got those.

    Reminds of the 2nd Gen Passport.. Good evolution... only wish they didn't skimp out on some of the better off-roading features of the 2nd Gen.. like real thick metal skid plates. I think the Pilot has the skid plates though? Seems like the Pilot is actually the evolution of the original Passports.

    Like many have said here, this should come with A/T tires, and for it not to come with a spare to match is a Honda fail. The 1st gen Passport (aka Isuzu Rodeo) had a spare on the tailgate. And yes, tow hooks!

    That washboard section in your test drive was very telling to me, and wish it could be incorporated into more offroad tests. I have a 4Runner like yours that is overkill for my needs, but it can easily handle and smooth out desert washboard trails like that at a decent pace. It looks like this Passport could get me where I want to go, but at a much slower pace, and it would beat me up (and probably the vehicle too) in the process. No thanks. Great Review.

    I know this is a bit old. How comfortable did you find the seats now that you've driven these on a couple of occasions? I find many vehicles that I drive have seat bottoms that are too short and after a bit of time my legs start to ache. I'm not that tall either. Subaru of all makers is actually offering manually adjustable seat bottoms but I'm just not into the whole CVT thing. I've been down that road already.
    Thanks,
    Guy

    A two inch lift and better tires, some underbody armor would do wonders for this vehicle.
    Being able to sleep in it without any mod’s makes it a serious contender for mild off-road and camping.
    My only gripe is why does it cost as much as a vehicle with a transfer case, underbody protection and a rear locker?

    I absolutely love it...!!! However, some changes are needed. I just HOPE that future iterations of this new model. Particularly the EX-L and up trims allow people to choose the grey leather option on the sonic grey pearl exterior color. For right now from what i've researched only being able to choose from 3 color options; dark blue, silver, and white to get the grey interior leather is VERY limiting. And i think the pairing of grey interior leather with the exterior sonic grey pearl color would be stunning. Having just black too choose from is VERY VERY drab for an interior color option. I also think the grey leather would look stunning on the Trailsport with the orange contrast stitching and badging. It's the main reason i would choose an EX-L over a Trailsport as i simply do not like an all-black interior. And also, Honda needs to offer better options on the EX-L & Elite trims for tire choices. Having just 20in tires with the SUPER awful Continentals is ridiculous. I've read over at the Honda forums that if you want you can go from the OEM 265/45/50 to a 275/45/50 and that will give you a bit more sidewall for blazing non paved trail fire roads etc...And you can still keep your stock OEM rims. But most of all that opens you up too better and more tire choices. Such as an A/T tire like the General Grabber AT3 or the Firestone Destination LE3's. However, hopefully Honda will make these changes themselves so consumers don't have too. It's rather ridiculous of Honda to have a model labeled "Trailsport" but only make it "cosmetically appealing". And really no different than an EX-L or Elite trim. Considering they ALL use the same I-VTM4 AWD system. You can't "off road" Honda on 20in tires that’s just a fact. So either use 18in tires for every model Passport. Or pick a different 20in tire size to broaden people’s choices. It's really not that difficult for them to do. And i'd bet A LOT of folks would agree with me on all of this. So for 2023 please make these changes Honda...!!! Thank you.

      Depends on the Toyota version you get. 4Runner, for example, doesn’t have any lane tracing. If you get Toyota Sense 3.0 it’s close to Subarus EyeSight but with a narrower view and not as good in inclement weather.

    Honda website says 77.7 cu ft cargo space with 2nd row folded. Thats roughly 6.5 ft by 4 ft by 3 ft, that is believable. I see this ~100 cu ft noted in several web sites for awd and 77 for fwd, that makes no sense. Someone planted a bad number somewhere that is getting repeated. A ford expedition has 104 cu ft and is 20 inches longer. While I think Honda has shown amazing cargo space efficiency compared to exterior dimensions, this would be magic.
