  • This week Publisher Tim Esterdahl is behind the wheel of the new 2022 Honda Passport Trailsport and he reviews this more off-road ready SUV. While Honda fans love it, it does beg the question why it doesn't get more praise from the automotive media.

    Excellent review!
    I own a Honda Passport Trailsport and it is by far the most underrated SUV on the market. I have owned some really nice expensive vehicles, but nothing compares to the PP. It's comfortable, has relatively high ground clearance, and goes through ice and snow like you wouldn't believe. I intend to keep mine for a long time.

      I have a couple questions as Im considering one for myself.
      1. How do you like the audio system? Many youtuber “experts” hate the speakers and say the sound quality sucks.
      2. Is there a way in the driver gauge cluster screen to display the band/song title currently playing while using Apple Carplay?

      Unfortunately my 2019 isn’t a Trailsport and it doesn’t get through the snow well.

    I cross-shopped the Passport with a 4Runner. In the end, I chose a 4Runner, primary because I wanted more ground clearance, a stock trailer hitch, and I just found the 4Runner the more emotionally appealing vehicle. I just couldn't get excited as I approached the Passport, whereas the 4Runner made me feel excited to get in it and drive it. I also found the adaptive cruise control of the Passport to be harsh and jerky. That being said, after a year with the 4Runner - I'm not sure I made the right choice. The 4Runner is a beast on forest roads, but I imagine the Passport would be far superior on snowy roads (common where I live) thanks to the Torque Vectoring AWD system. It does get annoying switching between RWD and 4WD when driving in patchy snow mountain roads with the 4Runner (you aren't supposed to keep it in 4WD on bare roads as it can damage the drivetrain). And RWD is just straight up dangerous in snow. Also, despite being the same exterior length as a 4Runner, the Passport has 11 inches more length in the back with the rear seats folded down (77" vs 66") - which is a game changer when camping in the back of the vehicle.
    If actually rock crawling and doing true off roading, the 4Runner dominates. But if you are (at most) hitting rutted out muddy or snowy forest roads and driving on sealed roads with ice and snow, I suspect the Honda Passport is going to be the superior performer and ultimately safer as the Torque Vectoring has a better chance of helping you out as you start to slip around in the snow.

    Great job Tim. I grew up in the Detroit area where (as you know) "foreign " cars are frowned upon. BUT, after doing a lot of research, i bought my wife a CRV. It's now 11 years old and she loves it. She was skeptical at first but when I told her it actually had more American parts than most domestic manufacturers she was sold. Other than replacing 2 batteries, regular maintenance and tires that Honda has been rock solid. We will definitely buy another when needed.

    The Passport is near the top of my list for my next SUV. The only downside is that it's pretty boring. The Passport has more than enough capability for some light off-roading. Most 4Runner owners don't need a real 4x4 but it's way better looking than the Passport, in my opinion.

    I am surprised Honda did not give you a 2023 Passport to test. There are several changes for 23, from the 22 you tested. I will be interested to get your take on the 2023 Pilot Trailsport when you can get your hands on one. They appear to ready for some really hardcore offroading if you wanted to take them there. If/when you do get a 23 Pilot Trailsport try to get it stuck for me, I would be interested to know if you can!
    Also want your take on the 2023 CRV Hybrid, I love the new blue color they have! They appear to be packed with features and have that brand new grill!

    It doesn't have the offroad chops that the 2023 Pilot Trailsport has... 10-speed auto, hill-descent control, offroad tuned suspension, skid plates, recovery points, and all-terrain tires... if and when those items get incorporated into the newer Passports (not yet in the 2023 Passport) then it might get some respect... as of now, it is just a utilitarian SUV with an offroad adventure sounding nametag.

    Like most automakers, Honda's interiors are pretty much the same throughout the lineup. Those big buttons for the heated seats are awesome believe it or not. Nothing better than being able to turn them on even if you're wearing big bulky winter gloves. I love the torque vectoring when taking those interstate curved ramps, that's where it really shines!

    I've had my 23 Passport Elite for almost a year now--great car for long trips as well as around town. The only bad thing is the Honda Sensing that you can't totally turn-off--it reminds me of a car built for driver's ed classes! If you like your car controlling how you drive (too many new cars with type system) then this is for you--worst yet they are putting this technology on motorcycles! Imagine your bike braking at the wrong time going into a curve or trying to pass traffic---try before you buy! Example: going up a snow covered hill on a two lane road and you need to maintain momentum, you reach a right hand curve with other cars coming the opposite way, the Passport will apply brakes thinking the on-coming traffic is an impact about to happen--very unnerving. I'm really surprised I'm not changing brake pads every year! Great car if not for Honda Sensing!

    • @Derek_Alan
      @Derek_Alan ปีที่แล้ว

      You want the manual parking brake. With an electric park break, If you lose electricity your vehicle may “un-brake” itself and roll down the hill. 😱

    • @Pickuptrucktalk
      @Pickuptrucktalk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Derek_Alan that’s not accurate. Here’s an explanation on how an electric parking brake works:
      If the electronic parking brake set the brake before the battery was dead, then yes, the brake is still set.
      An electronic parking brake isn’t relying on electrical power to hold a parking brake on. All the system does is do the work normally done by a person pushing the parking brake peddle, or pulling the parking brake level. Once the brake is tight it is being held by a ratchet/paw system like a conventional parking brake.
      If the brake isn’t set, and the battery is dead, then there is no power for the system to actuate the brake into the set position, so in this case the brake is off. I’m not aware of every possible combination, but I imagine some vehicles with electronic parking brakes have a manual way to set the parking brake as well.

    • @markf8256
      @markf8256 ปีที่แล้ว

      Looked it up. It is still using the older 3.5L v6, 24-Valve SOHC i-VTEC, engine.
      The 2023 Pilot is using the DOHC version of this engine, 24-Valve DOHC with Dual Variable Timing Control (VTC) with
      Multi-Stage High-Pressure Direct Injection.
      See Tim’s recent video on what HPDI does and why it’s an improvement on previous types of direct injection.

    What are you comparing the Honda Trailsport to...another Honda Passport trim level? A Pilot? The only difference is the Trailsport doesn't get the acoustic windshield (Elite) and the 20" low profile tires (EX-L & Elite). The same AWD is an option on the other trim levels of the Passport.
    The two bad things about the Honda Passport (all trim levels) is the Infotainment System failures and the PRICE.
