Once you know ABBA, you'll understand why they've been offered millions of dollars time and time again, to get back together.
Their music is fun, good-feeling, timeless...and inspiring.
I've been a metal head since around 1977 and I'm not afraid to say I love ABBA.

You've got nothing to be afraid of, cos you're in good company! "Mr. Macho" himself, Gene Simmons,
& "The Man In Black", w/ the black top hat, Mr. Ritchie Blackmore, BOTH stated they LOVE ABBA.

This song spent 14 weeks at #1 here in Oz (we Aussies were absolutely obsessed with Abba). Been having a ball watching you get totally hooked on them, and more than a bit sad you're putting Abba on pause for awhile - you haven't even scratched the surface when it comes to my favourite Abba songs, so I do hope you'll revisit them and add songs like - People Need Love, Does Your Mother Know, So Long, Arrival (a brilliant instrumental), Why Did it Have to Be Me, I've Been Waiting for You, etc, etc.

My wife and I are among the lucky people to see ABBA live at Wembley Arena in London and What's more we were there on the night when they recorded "I have a dream". They took just two takes to do it, something wasn't quite tight the first time, although the audience could never tell you what it was. It went on to be a huge number one here in the U.K. and all over the world.
By the way they sounded just as good live on stage as they did on the studio albums.

I can say for certain that both ABBA and the children in the choir weren't miming on the night. This was done on the second half of a two hour set, with several costume changes and towards the end the iconic illuminated ABBA sign.
It was a fantastic evening and truly memorable because it was the first concert that I went to with the girl who went on to become my wife and still is.

Does your mother know is such a great song. I find it very sweet, particularly in this era of metoo and being aware of how many rock stars did take advantage of young fans.
The song is saying “I’ll dance with you, chat with you, and flirt with you, but you’re a bit too young for anything else. You’re cute, but too young, and should probably go home to your mum”.
      It’s nice.

This was actually a cover, in a way, of the song Fernando in Swedish. It was originally written by Stig Andersson (ABBAs manager), together with the guys in ABBA, Björn and Benny, for Annifrid Lyngstads solo career. She released it on her solo album called "Frida ensam" ("Frida alone") in 1975. And then a year later they made lyrics in English and made it into an ABBA song. They also recorded it in Spanish.
The Swedish lyrics are different from the English and Spanish ones. In the Swedish ones, it´s about a guy named Fernando who has been dumped by his girlfriend, and is consoled by a friend, the singer, asking him to play some happy tunes and cheer for love, while the English one is about two old warriors remembering the war they were in together, when they were young.

I salute a fellow man who isn't afraid to feel the warmth and sweetness of this artistry. I used to take abuse from fellow jazz musicians who thought ABBA was for wimps. I feel sorry for them, that they think music always has to be hard-edged. One of my idols, Herbie Hancock, knew that it was okay to make music sometimes just for the sake of making a beautiful sound.
I'm not above crying when I listen to something that gets to me, even if it's quite simple.

James, by all means take a little Abba break. But not a long one. There is SO MUCH MORE. The Name Of The Game and Soldiers. Or if you feel like supercharged disco: Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! and Summer Night City. Or melancholic disco: If It Wasn't For The Nights (which should have been a single and a monster hit). Or very sinister disco: The Visitors. Or exquisitely arranged melodrama: My Love, My Life. Or the best Beach Boys pastiche ever: When I Kissed The Teacher. Or a minimalistic depiction of a day before everything changed: The Day Before You Came. Or...there's just lots.

It's great for us old folks to hear young people appreciate the music from our youth. The sad part is that songs that we, and now you and other reactors, are listening to form a volume of music that won't be added to. What there is out there from the likes of Elvis and company is all there is. There won't be any more coming so we appreciate what we have and enjoy introducing new audiences to several decades of great music.

These 2 girls can sing and harmonize. The 2 guys wrote all of their songs and the girls brought them to life. Which of their songs were the best? It's really hard to say. They had up beat songs like 'S.O.S.', 'Waterloo' and 'Does Your Mother Know'. Then the bittersweet songs like 'The Winner Takes it all' and 'Knowing Me Knowing You' and this song, 'Fernando'. Their biggest hit was 'Dancing Queen' and then there was 'Take a Chance on me', 'Chiquitita' and 'Money Money Money' among many others.

As a swede born in 1972, I love your reactions to ABBA (and everything else you do)!
Do not quit them cold turkey, try one of the songs that Benny sings 😀
“Rock Me” or “ Does Your Mother Know”

ABBA was a Swedish band that probably spent many summers in beautiful sunny Spain!

This song was #1 in Australia for 15 weeks in the days when you had to physically go into a store and buy a vinyl record. ABBA were huge in Australia. Totally dominated our charts for months on end with song after song.

OK - You got me commenting again. I love their harmonies. Your comments about the Spanish influence and this song reminded me of a similar song - Spanish Harlem by the Mamas and the Papas. And, being that my favorite sounds are from groups with 4 part harmonies, this is a great example. Just listen to the original version and just soak up the soundstage of their heavenly voices!

Magnificent song! I think from the point of view of two old soldiers, remembering their part in a lost war or battle, in which they still feel they were on the right side.❤️✌🏻❤️

Frida is such a soulful singer. Her voice is perfection. Everyone went apeshit over Agnetha but even as a child I appreciated Frida more. As an adult I still think she’s the better singer. She has more range and power, though I give Agnetha props for being able to bring pathos and emotion to a song almost better than anyone.

I have Disco Extended version of the song which last 7:02 minutes and the mix is just sound amazing. Lay all your love on me is the best Dance song all time and it has been totally underrated. I still play this song while driving every now and then. If you play loud, it song even better and give you a mood of dancing.

Such a beautiful song... Powerful while mellow... They had a magic of changing the emotions within a single song, sad to upbeat... ABBA, video pioneers too, their history is so interesting and incredible!!! Videos sent to and played in Australia was what really took them to next level after 1974 Eurovision win, Waterloo!!! 😊💜👍

The lyrics of Fernando are about two friends, one of whom is called Fernando. These friends, who were once freedom fighters, on a starry night, share their memories of a guerilla war they fought in several years ago in Mexico.
What's truly amazing about this, is that ABBA are purely a group from Sweden! They're also one of my own faves! Thanks again! ~Rose~ :)

ABBA will go down in history as one of the greatest musical groups on the 20th Century. Truly great music never dies, as Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, Lizst, Schubert and many other greats from centuries past can attest. We are so fortunate that we live in a time when we have this absolute wealth of incredible music to listen to. It's too bad the really great musicians of today aren't really able to find their audience. I know they must be out there, but they're not 'marketable' enough, I guess, and all we get is the sort of by-the-numbers formulaic stuff that is being cranked out by music companies. It really is a shame, but who has time to listen to it anyway? Not when there's all this cool old stuff to listen to.
Has anyone ever recommended Linda Ronstadt to you before? If not, check out her rendition of "Blue Bayou" and/or "You're No Good".

The song is about the Spanish Civil War, I believe. So yes, definitely Spanish influences here.
They had quite a few other Spanish-sounding songs as well. In addition to Chiquitita, which you've
already reacted to, there's also Move On and Cassandra. They weren't singles, so there aren't any music
videos for them. But they're just as good as the singles, and they're on TH-cam, so you could always
make that phase 2 of your ABBA discovery tour.
