Honestly, if they’d just let me bypass this stage manager thingy and just let me open as many windows as I want in a single space, and let me snap them to the side like you can in Windows and macOS, that’d remove the annoyance/friction that’s stopping me from using my iPad Pro way more. I took my iPad to the office once and hooked it up to a monitor, but I felt like I was having to fight stage manager. Juggling 6 apps for one task is a pain the bum lol

Getting away from the creative side, professional software is just not there. Take for example Microsoft Word. On the computer you can do almost anything you want to do with it. On the iPad you are really limited to what you can do. (Tried a simple grammar check recently???). This extends even more to Microsoft excel. So, if Microsoft came out with full apps for at least Word and Excel, then I would go so far as to say yes maybe 80% of people (non creatives) could possibly use an iPad as a laptop replacement. With the other 20% not having the specific app/workaround needed to do so (CAD, statistical analysis..etc).😢

These discussions miss the fact that the combination of laptop and iPad is where real versatility can be found. Connect an iPad to a MacBook and you have an excellent work environment. All the widgets and notifications and utilities often get in the way when working on laptop applications but make sense when they appear to the side on the iPad. Forget the iPad keyboards, mice and host of accessories that you are never completely happy with and use the iPad for what it is designed for. The MacBook keyboard, trackpad and storage is way better than even Apple’s keyboard case when the iPad is connected anyway. Set it up any way you want. I often use my iPad in portrait mode for Pages documents and have Numbers or references on the MacBook screen for example. The combination of multiple desktops on the MacBook with an iPad to the side is super productive and offers every possible interface option.
Some will say that carrying a MacBook and an iPad is a burden, but is it more so than carting around a portable keyboard, mouse, hard drive and a bunch of cables? Besides which, you won’t need a power adapter for a day with a fully charged MacBook/iPad pair.
The bottom line is that an iPad is not a MacBook replacement, nor is the opposite true, but the combination of the two is greater than the parts alone.

It cannot replace a Laptop for most people. People with normal jobs need to use software that sometimes isn’t available for MacOS, let alone iPad OS. The OS and the “Pro” apps are not there yet. But for someone who just wants to do simple stuff, web browsing, emails, work with some documents, maybe even do some light work with videos and photos, yes, in that case an iPad can be enough. And it has the advantages of a tablet and the pencil. I use mine as a companion for my Mac and I enjoy it a lot to use Apps with the Pencil.

@@SimonLYW it’s very common to use applications made by the company itself or other small companies, most times with Windows only applications, not even Linux and Mac. I have both a MacBook Pro and iPad Pro. After nearly six years with both I use the iPad Pro 90% of the time with the remaining 10% being given to the MacBook Pro as an archive. The flexibility and options for day to day use the iPad Pro more than covers both business and personal use. With the cost of MacBook pro’s I have the flexibility limit use and let it live a far more productive life…as an archive. With the base cost of what I need being $2300 for an iPad Pro (and covering 90% of my activities) and $3200 for the MacBook Pro…WHY WOULD I SPEND MORE chasing 10% of what I don’t already do on an iPad Pro?

  • @mjbah

The context you provided is precisely why people are comparing the two devices. With each iteration of the iPad, particularly the iPad Pro, Apple has been steering it towards the laptop category. This is evident in the addition of features such as a keyboard with a touchpad, the ability to connect a mouse, Stage Manager, the Files app for organisation, and professional applications.
A device intended solely for media consumption and basic tasks like web browsing, as Steve Jobs once described, would not require such high specifications and a substantial price tag. When the iPad possesses all the characteristics of a conventional laptop, a direct comparison is to be expected.

I ditch the Macbook Air for the iPad. So, my combo is Mac Studio M2 Ultra + iPad Pro M4. While on the go, the iPad provides the portability none other laptops can match and it has truly become the extension of my Mac since the M1 iPad came out.
I can do almost anything with the iPad:
    - Wirelessly tether to my Sony A7R5 for product photography.
    - Procreate and Artstudio Pro for drawing / painting.
    - Adobe Illustrator and adobe photoshop works okay. Lacking many features though.
    - All of my ERP softwares work just fine. Since M4 single core is super fast, surfing the web and use web app has become even better.
    - Taking notes & signing documents / contracts with the Apple pencil is great.
My primary device is still the Mac Studio, but when I'm not sitting at my desk, the iPad can easily replace the laptop/Macbook.

I’ve tried to do actual work with my iPad pro but, as you say, it has been a very frustrating experience confronting with limitations that - I would add - have been deliberately implemented in order to sell us both the iPad AND a Macbook. Yes, Apple convinced me to keep my Macbook for video editing, but I will buy a Surface pro 11 as my next 2 in 1 device for everything else in mobility.

If you are using it for work or study, the Microsoft Office experience is terrible and hamstrung in ways that baffle me. Word especially is a poor experience, so much so I now use Pages, which I’m guessing Apple is happy about. The real question is:
Can an iPad replace a Mac for me.
Sadly this isnt a question, that can be answered by saying yes or no.
You pointed out correctly, that there is no device that does it all. So there is only one way to figure it out, befor you decide to buy them both 😉.
You have to go through your personal workflow and usecases and check, which one will do it best and where you are willing and able to compromise.
I personally can do most things with my iPad. In percent i would say, that I can do 95% of my tasks on it. Although the workflow sometimes is a bit odd.
I dont want MacOS on my iPad. iPadOS is nearly there. There are two things I really want.
A broader Support for Hardware (real external camera support, e.g.)
Native support for Mac Apps, like the Mac supporting iOS Apps, but without the option for developers to opt against.

The native apps are not very good. You can use the Cloud version Office 365 via Browser aka - OFFICE DOT COM - which still misses some desktop app features depending how hardcore you are with say Excel but it's mostly very workable - requires internet connection obviously.
For best 100% Windows Office App results on iPad you can use Azure/Windows 365 (if your business offers a license) and then run this inside your iPad thin-client connection to this full-blown-windows-office-desktop-apps via cloud.
So there is a solution but it's more of a work-around/business case (due to cost). But if cost is not an issue eg business cost, there you. Again requires internet.

How about sticking to facts. 1) A laptop and an iPad are completely different devices and can never replace each other. 2) The ipad will never replace the computer unless it figures out how to do true multi-tasking. ie: If you attempt to render a video in final cut on your ipad, you will have to stop using the ipad until the export is complete. On a laptop, this is not the case. 3) If you wanted to learn to program or do anything outside of using apps, you will never use an ipad. Only a computer currently allows you to do most anything you want.
There are many other reasons the ipad can’t replace a computer but those are the main reasons.

I think the real reason people ask whether an iPad can replace a laptop, or vice versa, is not necessarily about its form factor or feature set. As highlighted, it’s about its use case and the usual one-sided attitudes that we like to impose upon others. In other words, if someone needs a MacBook (or MacOS) for a task that ONLY a MacBook can do, that person will not only say an iPad can’t do that task but because of MY use case, I hereby state that an iPad can’t replace a MacBook so others need to abide by that. 😮
OK, that might be a bit dramatic but that’s the mentality of some people - MY definition should apply to everyone. So many people approach this from a one-dimensional perspective that they cannot make any distinctions between what they do (which they feel is legitimately “pro”) and what others may need it for (which they feel is legitimately NOT “pro”).
It’s similar to Apple’s old ad “What’s a computer?” Something is either a “real” computer (to do “real” work) or a “toy” like a tablet for media consumption, email, etc. Functionally, they’re the same and use the same basic internal architecture that operates to perform certain functions. Theoretically, an Apple Watch is a computer just like a MacBook, but we understand that they have very different use cases. An iPad can perform many tasks like a MacBook can but they too have different use cases.
Conclusion: Objectively, iPads can and do replace MacBooks, as you stated Chris, and vice versa. Subjectively? People want to have differences of opinion because of their specific use cases and they think these opinions should apply to the rest of us. It’s all about our self-serving attitudes.

I don't expect to be able to do that sort of thing on an iPad or even a laptop really. My iPad is my primary device for when I leave home though, for logging meeting notes, for running presentations with clients, email etc. I like being able to have the divide of heavy lifting handled by the Mac and lighter work handled by the iPad.
Here's another use case. I've consulted for a medium size business, around 300-350 employees. I identified about 100 employees whose role was mobile, on their feet all day and involved making notes throughout the day, reading emails, logging their expenses and filling in paperwork. Really nothing that an iPad couldn't handle, and with the form factor of the iPad, together with the great battery life, the iPad was the much better choice for those people. Sure they could've lugged around laptops, but they wouldn't be using most of the functionality because there just wasn't a need to. We did run into issues of archaic, huge spreadsheets which were a pain to navigate on an iPad, but we just turned those into a database and built a iPad friendly UI to access it.

Definitely a matter of personal choice as you say. For me the Apple Pencil is what makes the difference. The main problem is that when you have been using Mac OS for a long time, I think you still have to think in terms of a workaround for many functions when using the iPad and then find yourself jumping back on a Mac / MacBook for ultimate speed of workflow...but that doesn't answer all the questions in terms of portability in my humble opinion. Key ideas to consider for framing:
    1. For basic computing the iPad is sufficient eg email, web surf etc.
    2. For basic computing the touch and pencil options plus optional keyboard/touchpad is more convenient and comfortable computing.
    3. For specialised software and/or complex work-flows the Mac with full desktop features is necessary and hardware includes baked in keyboard/trackpad, much better/bigger battery life and bigger screen options and hardware power options.
    Key ideas for comparing:
    1. Convergence has narrowed the gap to equity almost in practical terms in hardware eg M1 chip onwards.
    2. iPadOS has updated gradually to narrow the gap for more desktop uses though still lags
    3. Complementary devices has benefits but you are budgetting for spending more on more devices as a negative. "Apple Continuity" should be considered as optimal if budget allows it.
    Key ideas for Practical Choices:
    1. If low budget, doing basic computing - iPad is one of the best devices for this currently on the market. Lower spec'd models make more sense than ipad Pros which are hyper-expensive with almost zero upside in use case optionality though hardware quality is higher for user experience.
    2. If a worker or specialist worker a full desktop OS aka MacOS on Macbooks Laptop is probably in most cases better option.
Key ideas for Solving 2-in-1 Conundrums if preferred:
    1. Use Remote Desktop Applications in iPad and a spare home computer and connect to internet. You can now take one device with you and use mobile OS and desktop OS everywhere/anywhere on the go. Use correct peripherals. Choose good RDP/VNC solutions and fast internet connection at both ends.
    2. Sign up to Cloud PC Services such as Shadow PC or Windows 365 and pay a monthly sub or request your business pays this service charge for you. You can hook up to mobile/desktop OS alternating on your iPad
Future 2-in-1 Soutions possible but unlikely in the short term:
    1. MacOS compatibility (chicken egg problem)
    2. Virtual Machine Access on iPadOS
    3. New 2-in-1 capable iPads launched by Apple possibly with context dock mode to MK splitting iPadOS/MacOS?

Great video! I get sick of that question. The iPad is an extremely VERSATILE device to complement a MacBook or laptop in general. It depends on your use case for your profession. As a teacher/ sound engineer for our plays, my iPad assist me perfectly as a device that I can use on the go as I roam my classroom to teach as well as when I have to run around our auditorium to fix microphones and speaker sounds. For bigger tasks I go to my MacBook.

Two things most reviewers overlook. 1)A lot of people have a work issued laptop PC and the IT dept won’t let them use a Mac or iPad. So their ‘home computer’ needs could easily be solved by an iPad. Thus the iPad replaced a home laptop. 2) Not everyone makes TH-cam videos. A TH-camr’s tech needs are different than the average person. Most TH-cam tech reviewers overlook both of those things when slamming the iPad for not being good enough for their specialized needs, therefore it is not good enough for anyone. Totally not true. I am lucky enough to have both a Mac laptop and iPad, but I use the iPad way more.

You could make the same argument for ‘can a Laptop replace a desktop?’ The answer is the same, it depends on what you want to do, but, for the record, I don’t own a desktop anymore..but I do have both iPad and MacBook Air, and use them for their own strengths.

It depends on your apps and needs. I know I don't have any need for a laptop right now but there are some apps that I'd rather have on a laptop than am iPad. On stage manager apps aren't exactly as I'd like them to be on a big screen. I can't use Google docs on the entire screen and instead I have the wallpaper in the background that I don't want to have there. I can't use split screen exactly the way I would on a laptop on an external display.
The iPad will be great for Freeform when I'm making mind maps and summaries in uni, when I'm using procreate for drawing, in a lecture hall taking notes, annotating, etc, the mac will be for Photoshop, multitasking in any way on a desktop monitor, and using a full screen.

The iPad over a MacBook Air is a superior device only whilst walking or lying down (and an iPhone is better for that). The touch screen is great for some artists and professionals but for everyone else a trackpad is far easier and more comfortable to use and your screen stays cleaner. The iPad is a niche product but for kids it's good because it's less prone to breaking and the touchscreen is fun on some games. There are much cheaper alternatives to Apple though.

A lot of developers (including apple) have done a great job of making the experience between their MacOS and ipad app almost identical and seamless to the point their iPad apps feels just like the desktop app. Which is one reason I don't use or need a macbook anymore for on the go computing. The ipad is just more versatile for my wants and needs. But I do still use a Mac Mini with duel display setup in my home studio when I need it. But otherwise, the ipad does everything I want and need when on the go or working remote.

For me, it just depends on what I'm doing. If I'm consuming content, it really just depends on what mood I'm in that day lol. Sometimes I go to that MacBook/laptop cause I like the bigger screen and I'm at a desk. If I wanna sit on the couch or something to consume that content I'm gonna use my iPad. If I'm wanting to get actual work done, it's gonna be that MacBook/laptop almost every time.

The part that I always struggled with is I was never really a laptop person. So let's go back a few years.
I bought my first iPad because I wanted it to draw on it. I bought it exclusively for drawing, and I loved it. So when I saw they had more power to do more things. I always wonder why they knee cap it.
Eveutally I did buy my first laptop in 2020 with the M1. Lots of FOMO going around. I realized that laptops were really handy, and I loved the idea of a laptop.
And then the real problem happened. I went travelling. Carrying TWO devices with me is a pain in the butt. You always take them both out with security, and they get heavy if you're spending 10-20 hours in airports and walking around cities.
Honestly, if it wasn't for travel, I would be fine, whatever keep it two devices. I have a big ass office I can store lots of niche tech. It's just the travel part that gets me!
    ---
I can't replace the iPad with a laptop, because I NEED to draw on it. I did get a new Surface Pro with windows, and that's replacing both the iPad and the MacBook.

I work in the IT dept. for a software company, and I have the pleasure of being able to use many devices at work (Surface Pro, Surface Laptop, Dell laptops, Chromebooks, ChromeOS Flex, Android phone), and my personal devices are Mac Pro (Late 2013), iPad Pro (3rd gen) and iPhone.
All devices and OSs have shortcomings, but my choice will always be iPad: portability, battery life, possibly to have 5G, Continuity and Apple Fitness+ to say a few. The iPad can be everything thing you need, if you embrace change and don’t accept status quo. Is it the best in all scenarios ? Of course not, but I n my experience no device is, you just need to find the one that is right for you.

Here’s what you’re forgetting. There are many people who can’t afford both a laptop and tablet or simply don’t want to carry double the devices, double the weight, double the cords , double the… you get my point. So the question for real life people people is “can I have a decide that can do everything”.. that’s why iPads are becoming popular for professionals. Because as you said in your video, iPads are adaptable. They are modular computers. A tablet when you want it, a laptop when you need it, and a desktop if you like that setup. You’re talking on your video like some rich person who could just buy it all. That’s not reality for so many people

And y not have MacOS and let people decide if they want a touchscreen or not. People will still buy both devices. I just checked even the MacBooks Pro 16 inch has only 600 nits of brightness for SDR which means the iPad Pro is the brightest display by apple currently with 1000 nits for SDR content. Just make it also software capable with the MacOS. Then its an easy buy.

A quick one: I think influencers (creators) leverage the YT algorithms by pushing this iPad -vs. Macbook agenda. The reason is that they always do things differently for Android tablets, such as the Tab S9 Ultra. They never say that we want Windows on Samsung tablets despite Samsung having done it a decade ago and having Linux as well at one time.
So, it is to draw in the anti-Apple crowd to flex on negative Apple videos, and it works as they are copying each other now. Apple is more likely to be subject to this agenda as they do not sponsor creators or provide an income stream from affiliated links. So, there is a good reason creators are less likely to push this for Samsung, as it would affect their bottom line.
Glad to see a balanced, reasoned take; thanks!

In my opinion, the iPad represents a very modern approach to work. Some people will adapt to it faster than others. The Mac, on the other hand, can offer a link to the past. Some creators may need special plugs or apps that are not compatible with or won't run on the iPad. So, as you said, it ultimately comes down to personal preference.

This is kind of weird, yes it could replace your laptop if you use your laptop for a cutting board, an iPad pro can also serve that same function because of a similar form factor. It’s even more portable. But if you need it to do things that are only offered in a fully featured operating system, no. The problem is that it could! If developers and apple would try to do it, AND it would be better for many people if they did. The device is a better form factor than a laptop aside from tipping over due to poor keyboard and stand design. A touch screen, a stylus, easy to pick up and use in the hand, why wouldn’t you want to also finish the job on one device?!?! Apple is holding back.
