This is tough, I have actually encountered homes like this and because I did not know how to say what you said I simply just left because I didn’t want to offend the client.
It is a tough situation to handle. I'm sure that you are not the only one that has walked away. Thank you for sharing your personal feedback and for watching the video.🙂
One of the problems with a true hoarder is that they have mental health issues. They CAN'T get rid of anything, sometimes not even trash! If they are elderly, sometimes dementia is involved.
Hoarding has lots of layers to it. And the most intense hoarders I've met are some of the worlds most creative people. There are usually reasons for having lots of the stuff they have. It often just needs some guidance.
We did exactly what you suggest at 7:30. We were polite and just said it wasn’t a good fit and that we can’t actually fit this in our tight schedule. Only the two of us that do the cleaning and we actually don’t have room for this big of a job. She responded badly and lashed out on us on google rating us badly saying that we knew she had a mental illness. (But we didn’t know she was a hoarder). It was one of our worst experiences with a potential client. The worst experience. It was unlike anything we had ever seen when entering a house. It was beyond anything we’ve ever done. We so declined the job. And she really bumped our google rating down.
The good news is you can comment on most rating sites. As a professional you can leave a professional comment that states something similar. The key when leaving a comment about a rating (good or bad) is to thank the person for taking the time to share their comments and then add a snippet about why you are thrilled to be working with them or why it is unfortunate the job didn't turn out well for you. Be polite no matter what. LOTS of people will hire you from a "bad review" when they see that you're not mean and nasty back and that you are still truly concerned the "angry" person gets the proper cleaning help they need. I'm so sorry this happened to you. :-(
I would just declined. I just recently had a case where it was so much trash everywhere on the floor. There was newspapers, old mail and trash. I started sweeping all these little red bugs crawled out and ended up with scabies and crabs. I broke out with a horrible skin rash.
Angela Brown my face is still recovering from scars. Sometimes our health is more important than the money. I love this video and the breakdown on how to coordinate such a massive job. Very well done Angela!! 👍🏼
The challenge with hoarding is the belongings often encompass the other issues in the home that need attention - like working showers in this case. :-(
The hoarding jobs usually take so much longer than regular cleaning jobs because uncovering layers usually reveals more things that were not originally included in the bid because they were not mentioned or not visible to either the homeowner or the house cleaner on the walkthrough.
@@AskAngelaBrown Yes. It took me about 10 hours, and after that I was exhausted 😴 I charged $40/hr. for that job. 😆 I later did a deep cleaning which was another $500 😁
It depends on the severity of the help you need. You can start on nextdoor.com and ask for recommendations. There are professional organizers who live in your area who are trained and skilled at this very type of cleaning/organization and often better equipped to help with the emotional attachments than a cleaning company who specializes in maintenance cleaning. You can also search Google + the keywords (Organizing, Hoarding, Decluttering + your zip code) to find professional help in your area.
Or last hoarding job had mice/rat cockroach droppings all over and I said something nicely and she said " I can't call pest control til my house is clean." 🤮 I went a few times. And they cancelled often and made excuses. The way hoarders do...
Take a look at this playlist of similar videos we made on hoarding - Hoarders. More fab info.

I'd run for the hills!! There's not enough $ in the world for me to clean a hoarder's house..my OCD wouldn't be able to handle it.
Rebecca Parker I’d love to do the actual cleaning bit after all the hoard and trash has been removed.

Oh no...that's terrible! I hope the rash didn't last long or leave any marks.

And hoarders have you come once or twice, then they freak out and cancel. I had one recently they had 2 bathrooms neither shower worked. 🤮

I charge by the hour. I did 2 and geez it took so long, good thing it was hourly 😁

It sounds like you had a bad experience. I'm so sorry. It is hard for hoarders to ask for, and accept help.
