Yup. I’m going to do this! Best tip ever for this job! You wouldn’t happen to know why the valve cover has two holes in the front that are not holding it on and not from the air box. I’ve seen people call them vent holes but since when do valve covers have vent holes? Mine seem to spew little tiny bits of oil from them. lol.
Man! thank! you! I'm about to replace my gasket and seals and had no idea what I was about to get into and your courage to take that leap will save me big time! I'll be doing that as soon as my seals come in.
this is what im talm bout. i saw a vid of this other guy and as soon as he said something about a motor mount i knew something wasnt quite rite. Especially since i told one of my girlfriends i would fix their valve cover gasket today. 😍
Honesly this design is for older 1.4 16V too, but instead of just a cover it is the whole housing for the camshafts, but you still need to remove that intake. I also cut it off and build a custom metal plate and drilled 2 holes in the cut piece and on the one in the air intake and bolted them together and it's structurally the same, only visually not as pleasant to look at, but I don't care.
Right on man! I love videos like this. Saving the rest of us time, money, and energy due to useless engineering from the automakers! I appreciate this video and will cut that useless piece away.
That tab if cut will trigger a dealer no service if ever brought in for service. They will require it to be replaced if you want dealer service. There is a way to loosen it a bit to wiggle out the valve cover. Disconnect the intake hose. And few of the manifold screws to push it back a bit.
@@skampsautomotive8560 I only mentioned that as my sons was cut by a previous owner and his is 2015 he went to the dealer last week they refused to service it.
Hi ! I don't have oil leaking outside the engine from the head gasket, but i have my first and fourth sparkplug covered in oil. Can i just change the sparkplug seals ? Thank you !
@@skampsautomotive8560 Thanks for answer me ! Last question, do i have to remove the whole engine cover just to change the sparkplug seals ? Thanks again !
now that it is now august 2020, let me ask how that short cut has been working out.....is the fiat fine without the intake manifold attached to the valve cover?
Antonio Biancofiore No issues to report whatsoever. The intake manifold and valve cover both have many other bolts that hold them to the engine. That one bolt I cutoff seems to have made no difference.
Skamps Automotive ....maybe designed that way to stop intake manifold from vibrating too much? .....regardless I like what you did as a workaround to avoid the excessive labour just to get to the valve cover ...ty for the quick reply
@@antoniobiancofiore2396 I often try to come up with logical reasons why certain things are designed the way they are, but sometimes I think the engineers just weren't considering serviceability enough. There are dozens of 4 cylinder engines with very similar intake manifolds that do not have a bolt going over the valve cover like that. Hope the video helped!
@@skampsautomotive8560 did the bolt fit back into the same place? or are you running it without it? lol was also thinking if you put the tab back on, it'll at least allow the bolt to be mounted on to prevent a leak from that end
Ron Alan Yes, the tube seals are removed from the underside of the valve cover. They should just pop out and new ones pop in, although dont be surprised if the old ones are hard to get out and break into multiple pieces as they may be very hard and brittle. I’m not sure which part under the pop component you’re talking about?
How easy is it to actually remove the engine cover and other parts to get to the removal of the valve cover? Can I do this without any knowledge of cars? needing to replace my valve cover gasket and don't want to pay for 5.5 hours of work!
The engine cover just pops off by hand. The only special tool you will need is a right angle grinder with a cut off wheel. (You can buy this at Harbor Freight for around $30) Besides that it’s just a basic set of tools to do the job. To me it’s simple, but I can’t speak doing it with no mechanical experience. Good luck!
@@skampsautomotive8560 Great video!! Could this be why my engine is smoking and smelling like burnt oil? When I stop at lights, etc. I can see smoke come from my hood and it smells like that. I thought it might be the head gasket, but now think it might be this! Thanks!!
@@timhelmsTV It could be because of this I suppose, but I would be more inclined to think that oil is leaking externally from somewhere and getting onto the exhaust manifold. It may very well be the outside of the valve cover gasket.

Kevin B The bolt for that tab does not hold the valve cover to the cylinder head. That hole on top is just partially threaded into the valve cover. There are bolts down lower that go all the way around the valve cover that secure it to the head.
@@skampsautomotive8560 The Dodge dart & some Jeep renegade have the same mopar 1.4 engine, do you know if the gasket is interchangeable? can't find the fiat version anywhere I look.
Kevin B Yes it’s the same engine. I see a bunch of the gaskets available on EBAY. Make sure you get 4 spark plug tube seals also, as they don’t sell them with the outer gasket.
Wow. 1st, I thought it was crazy that some diy'er just hacked that tab off, but now a dedicated vid from a "mechanic"?! "Well, I don't wanna do the job right, so let's hack this off! Who cares?!" Yes folks, just hack up your engine bay when doing it right is too much. You could probably just loosen the manifold & wiggle the valve cover out. Nah, hack it!! Good advice for beginners!!
Too ghetto for my tastes. I wouldn't do this to a customer car. Regardless of how shitty the design is. That said, intake removes fairly quickly. An hour tops.
This isn't for a mechanic to do to a person's car. This is a way got a mechanically inclined individual who's fixing his own vehicle to get it done faster.

KevSpec I would just say good and snug. Don’t overdo it, but the bolts should bottom out on the head and you will know when not to go further.
